      Imitation Queen Christina

This is a clear attempt to imitate the success of Queen Christina. The problem is that Carroll is no Garbo and Clive Brook is certainly no John Gilbert.Written by Ben Levy and directed by Victor Saville, the only word that can be used to describe this film is dull. The British film industry did make costume pictures like this in the thirties in the mistaken belief that they could beat Holllywood at their own game.Further more they 20 years age gap between the two leads means they had about as much chemistry as a plate of blaming. In any event Carroll lacks warmth and Brooks is as wooden as usual.as. a result there is little believable romance despite Carroll's heaving bosom.

      Watchable historic tale.

I am adding reviews of all films I'v seen that so far lack one, this is a rather overlooked film that may well gain more viewers (mine is it's 11th vote) now that it's available on DVD as part of the 'Ealing Studios Rarities Collection vol #13' which is how I have seen it, my brief review follows... 'Historic tale set in the last quarter of the 18th century, stars Clive Brook as a doctor who is brought to the royal palace to attend the King of Denmark, he becomes a favorite of the queen and uses his growing powers to bring about reforms, this upsets most of the royal court, quiet good.' It was made at, but not by Ealing Studios.

      • Trivia
In reality, King Christian VII was only 17 when he became betrothed to 15-year-old cousin Princess Caroline Matilda, sister of George III of the UK, who was unaware that the bridegroom was mentally ill. So the two were mere teenagers when they married at Christiansborg Palace on November 8, 1766. After his marriage, Christian became very sexually promiscuous and soon became involved with courtesan Støvlet-Cathrine. The neglected Caroline Matilda became involved with Dr. Johann Struensee, who was the King's personal physician. Struensee became the de facto ruler of Denmark but was soon deposed and executed. The King divorced Caroline Matilda in 1772 and she died in Germany of scarlet fever on May 10, 1775, age 23. So although Christian lived until age 59, all action in this film would have historically taken place between very young people.
