    Always Acting

Adolphe Menjou is the greatest actor in Budapest/ He falls in love with Elissa Landi, whose acting he considers second-rate. Together, they decide to take New York by storm, as a married couple..... but she is a hit with the producers, and he is not so she winds up starring in David Manners' new play, while he's a bit player.... until the lading man walks out, and Menjou takes his part.

This is one of those movies that starts out as pure comedy, with Menjou playing an egotistical monster of the theater, and Landi having enormous appeal to all the men, which drives Menjou crazy. It's tremendous fun to watch, up through the premiere of the new play, whereupon, like many a comedy, the film makers realize they've got a plot to get through, and switch gears, letting all the fun go by.

Still, Menjou is great, and Raymond Walburn has a small part in which he underacts. I don't think I've ever seen Walburn do that before.
