Only piece of this film that still exist

This film only has 38 seconds preserved that we know of and it is owned by a man in Elsmere, Kentucky and was featured on Public TVs History Detective on July 24th, 2006. It was found by this gentleman's grandfather's attic. Apparently his grandfather had ordered a segment of this film to show in his home. The original nitrate film is in such repair that it can not be shown, however this segment was electronically reproduced by the National Film Presevation Board and is stored there.

I watched this segment of film and it is too short to make a judgment on the quality of the story or even the events of the story.

    A rare treat to watch

I saw the same episode on History Detectives. Originally the detective tracked down the principal as Ed Polo, a big star of silent westerns who is all but forgotten. Some excellent sleuth work on the part of the History Detectives revealed that this film was made from stock produced in 1921 by Kodak. They then traced the film to that same year and discovered through visual identification that the actor was indeed Jack Hoxie, another famous western star of the silent screen. Helen Rossen made her only appearance with Hoxie in this film so the mystery of the 38 second movie was solved. It is a shame that over 90% of movies made before 1951 were made from nitrate which is flammable or degrades quite rapidly. Also, many of the movie theaters back then did not have to return the films so many of them were thrown away.

    Really C o n f u s e d !!!

Cedar Lake, near Big Bear Lake in San Bernardino County, California was actually constructed in 1928 by my grandfather (G. M. Bartlett) and Great Uncle (X.G. Bartlett)doing business as Bartlett Brothers Real Estate. Their primary business was to purchase acreage suitable for subdividing into residential lots for sale to individuals. It seems IMPOSSIBLE to me that this movie could have been shot "at Cedar Lake" for release in 1921!!!! PERHAPS, it was filmed in the area where Cedar Lake now is, currently operating as the Cedar Lake Camp??? I have not seen the 38 seconds referenced to still be existing, but would be happy to do so in an attempt to help determine IF the location was at or near the present Lake!! My address is P. O. Box 1126, Franklin, TN 37065.
