Lane makes it all look so easy

The short starts with a duel in the Old South wherein a man inadvertently saves one of the duelist's lives for which he is given a watch. Years pass and we next see the grandson, impoverished and heading to the big city for work (taking the watch with him). His ma gives him a pigeon in case he wants to send a message back home. The watch is the key to getting a fortune and a vamp and her cohort want it. As the previous reviewer said, the plot is chaotic which is okay when the gags are good. They were pretty good in this one – my favorite was when Lane fell out the window and lands on a series of awnings. And I agree with the previous reviewer that it was not a dummy that the villain was twirling around over his head but actually was Lane. Amazing.

    Poor but for Lane

The plot of this short comedy is rather chaotically and poorly organized. Perhaps I should say "set up" since typically a comedy short was simply a set for for a bunch of gags. Nonethless, the introduction to the situation -- impoverished Lupino Lane has inherited a valuable watch which was given to his grandfather and vamp Gwen Lee wants it and heavy Otto Fries is trying to help her -- is introduced in a disjointed fashion and then largely dropped.

But one does not look at silent comedy shorts for their plots. One looks at them for the gags and Lupino Lane was one of the great spill takers in the business: only Keaton could rival him and their styles were totally different. Here Lane does the most extreme neck roll I've ever seen and when Otto Fries is whirling him around, I don't think it's a dummy.

So it's not a great short, but Lane keeps it interesting.
