Alice and the Three Bears (1924)

Alice and the Three Bears

7/10

early Disney

The Three Bears are doing some home brewing. Of course, this is during Prohibition. One of the ingredients is hops. Baby Bear sets off to catch a frog or more specifically, he's catching the frog's hops. Meanwhile, Alice (a real girl) and her cat come upon the house of the Three Bears.

Walt Disney is the director. The bears are drawn more like a mouse. I do like the mixing of animation with live action. It is a bit imaginative although I wonder if it's an admission that he can't draw people. The hops joke is funny. This gets rather violent. Cartoon violence is funny. I like this version of Three Bears.

This is NOT "The Three Bears" you read as a child! However, despite the current low rating, it's very, very good.

This cartoon is among Walt Disney's earliest--though few today would know about these Alice cartoons--assuming his animation career began with "Steamboat Willie" and Mickey Mouse!

When this Disney cartoon begins, it's VERY obvious it's NOT based that closely on the original story! You find Baby Bear trying to mix up a batch of illegal alcohol (it was during Prohibition after all). The recipe included shellac, paint remover, nails and an old inner tube--but he then realizes he need hops! How he gets hops is pretty cute. Soon, Alice and her cat come onto the scene and Baby Bear and the cat get into a fight. Soon, Mommy and Daddy Bear arrive and things look bad for Alice and the cat. So what happens next? See this one for yourself--it's VERY clever.
