Max and Jane Want to Do Theatre review

Max dons fake buck teeth in an attempt to get out of an arranged marriage only to find that his intended (Jane Renouardt), who is actually something of a looker, has assumed an equally ridiculous disguise for the same reason. Has it's amusing moments - and a clever (but now familiar) twist ending - but not one of Linder's best.

    Max Dies On Stage

Max's folks want him to get married to a young lady of their choice. Max, however, wants a career on stage. The young lady is not upset, because she, too wants a career onstage. Too bad neither of them are suited to it.

If Noel Coward warned a prospective stage mother to not put her daughter on the stage, he might have offered the same advice to Max's parents in this movie. Max, of course, does everything wrong onstage, and does so uproariously, as befits the first international comedy superstar, whom Chaplin called "The Professor". Max Linder usually managed to make his character quite believable, even as he indulged in slapstick, almost certainly because he did not play a stage clown, but a recognizable type of young, well-to-do Parisian of the era.
