The Queen Cannot Command Her Heart

Queen Margarita Xirgu is riding in the park when her horse bolts. Ricardo Purga rescues her and they fall in love. But she is the queen, after all, and he is a leader of the liberals. Their government has just fallen, and the conservatives want control. She resists, so they decide to marry her to a Russian nobleman. That she cannot oppose, but threat of a revolt is in the air from the lower classes, and Purga has his hands full keeping them quiet.

Senorita Xirgu gives a good performance in the lead, and there are some interesting compositions by cinematographer Salvador Castello. But the story is controlled by the titles, with the performers offering their performances in poses and dramatic gestures better suited for the stage. Still, there are lots of shots of Gaudi-designed architecture to be seen.
