Barrymore & cast filmed this movie twice in 1916

Barrymore, Flora Zabelle & their cast & crew actually shot this movie, The Red Widow, twice. The reason was that the completed first version's negative had not been made into copies and a nitrate fire occurred destroying the camera negative. Since no prints had been struck or not enough of them, John Barrymore, Flora Zabelle, both more famous from the Broadway stage than for films, reshot the entire movie for no SALARY! ...boy! those were the days. I'm sure Paramount greatly appreciated this nicety on the part of two leading stars, but these kinds of treats were certainly a rarity and pertain to a time when the film industry was still growing and was more a family than a cutthroat business. Can't imagine film personnel who would be so careless as to let a completed negative catch fire before duplication, let alone actors who would remake an entire film for no pay. Wouldn't happen today.
