More Interesting As A Placeholder For Contemporary Dutch Film Making Than A Movie

Julie Meijer is loved by two of her father, Kees Lageman's deck hand: Jaap van der Poll, whom she loves, and Piet Fuchs, whom she finds rather repellent. One day on the briny, Lageman and van der Poll get into a fight, and van der Poll falls into the sea. Lageman immediately sets out in a boat to rescue him, but he is gone. Fuchs then blackmails Lageman into supporting his suit for Miss Meijer's hand.

Theo Frenkel's movie is broadly written and performed, but beautifully shot with strong compositions and good second-unit direction. The rather over-the-top part of it seems considerably stronger to me than its virtues, and it makes broad use of its titles to explain what is going on. It's in pretty good shape for its age, and rather handsomely tinted. Perhaps that is why I find it more noteworthy as an unusual survivor of Dutch film making in this period than on its own merits.
