    Entire cast is Korean

The film falls into the realm of propaganda, evident in the exclusively Korean cast, even for Japanese characters. The poorly executed Japanese dialogue necessitates subtitles, which unfortunately mirror the overall subpar quality. The portrayal of all Japanese characters as inherently evil adds another layer of discomfort, overshadowing what could have been a compelling biographical documentary about the cyclist. Regrettably, the film opted for a route that veers into the territory of cinematic disappointment and typical Korean propaganda and all Japanese are pure evil. You'd think in 2019 that directors and producers actually want to provide something worth filming. No idea who sponsored them, but I can guess...

    Solid inspiring film

Rain is excellent as the naive young cyclist Um. During the early 20th century , Um was a Korean star for beating the Japanese at races staged to show their superiority over the Koreans during their occupation . Very little is known about Um's life , but the writers created a quite interesting and poignant back story for him . The secondary story involving the Righteous Army , Korean freedom fighters , was also a creation of the writers, but is quite powerful in its depiction of the cruelty the Japanese imposed on the people . The movie works well as an inspirational sports film, and a patriotic ode to those who fought against the occupation.

The story never drags , the cinematography shows the beauty of the Korean countryside but also the moody despair of an occupied people . Good cast includes some well known Korean actors .

Riding Through History: Rain's Unyielding Spirit in 'Race to Freedom: Um Bok Dong

"Race to Freedom: Um Bok Dong" is an exhilarating and deeply moving film that earns a perfect 10/10 rating for its masterful blend of historical drama and inspiring storytelling. At the heart of this cinematic triumph is Rain, whose portrayal of the titular character is nothing short of remarkable. Rain, with his unparalleled ability to embody intensity and innocence simultaneously, truly gives his all in this role, captivating the audience with every scene he graces.

Set against the backdrop of the early 20th century, a period marked by the expansive might of the Japanese Empire, the film does an exceptional job of immersing viewers in a pivotal time in history. It tells the story of Um Bok Dong, a legendary Korean cyclist whose resilience and victories became a beacon of hope for a nation struggling under the yoke of colonial rule. Rain's performance is so compelling that it transcends mere acting; he becomes the embodiment of Um Bok Dong's spirit, bringing to life the cyclist's determination and struggle with a palpable energy that is both inspiring and heart-wrenching.

The film's production values, from its meticulous period detail to its sweeping cinematography, complement Rain's performance beautifully, creating a visually stunning tapestry that transports the audience to a different era. The emotional depth of the story, combined with the historical significance of the setting, makes for a powerful cinematic experience.

This movie is masterpiece, it directly cured my cancer. Uhm Bok Dong you are novel life saver. I will keep this movie for my grandson. I want to give special thanks to the Rain who performed extraordinary performances in the movie.

It is real tragedy that Oscar 2020 did not nominate this masterpiece. If you see this review I highly recommend you see this movie. Best quarantine movie ever!
