‘Uncharted’ Is No. 2 on Netflix for Some Reason
Image
The Netflix Effect is weird. Whether it’s “Suits” or “Madame Web” or a Netflix original like “Baby Reindeer” that turns into a sleeper hit, people tend to gravitate toward some truly random stuff on Netflix. It’s the case most weeks on the Netflix Top 10 charts, but this week even we’re at a loss.

Coming in at No. 2 on Netflix’s Top 10 English Films for the week of February 17 was none other than “Uncharted,” the 2022 Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg adventure-thriller based on the PlayStation video game franchise. Because…why not?

You guys watched it 10.5 million times this week, behind only the Netflix original rom-com “La Dolce Villa,” which hit No. 1 for the second week in a row post-Valentine’s Day with 14.1 million views. “Uncharted” previously landed on Netflix on August 5, 2022, and it spent three consecutive weeks on the Netflix Top 10 charts at that time, reaching 23 million viewing hours in a single week.

Netflix has revealed its lineup for February 2025.

Reality TV enthusiasts are in for a treat. For those who prefer a gripping thriller, Netflix will drop Apple Cider Vinegar, a new series premiering on February 6 that’s worth keeping an eye on.

In other big news, the highly popular series Cobra Kai will release its final batch of five episodes this month, marking the end of the TV series. What’s Coming to Netflix in February 2025
Image
For those that worship at the altar of Mindy Kaling, February brings good news.

The comedian’s latest project, “Running Point,” is a 10-episode comedy series starring Kate Hudson. When a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla (Hudson) is put in charge of the L.A. Waves, one of the most famous NBA teams — and a family business. For a laugh-free experience, this month also finds Robert De Niro in his first regular TV role, when the limited series “Zero Day,” also starring Jesse Plemons, Lizzy Caplan, Angela Bassett, and Connie Britton comes to the platform February 20.

Indiana Jones & The Great Circle: How To Upgrade Health & Stamina
Image
Upgrading Indy's health in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is one of the most important goals for many new players. This latest publication from Bethesda Softworks has completely altered how one would look at health and other skill upgrade systems. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle puts you at the forefront of the choices that Indiana Jones makes, putting them literally in his shoes and tossing them his whip. Starting players off in Vatican City is an excellent mix of action, adventure, and stealth that allows you to upgrade skills to explore in more fulfilling ways.

The health system is a bit complicated at first, as it functions on a system of requirements different from what you typically see. Many of the skills rely on certain books in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which can be found around the world to be upgraded, normally located in more obscure...

‘Nova Roma’ Board Game Review
Image
Of all the themes I might name for board games, Ancient Rome – alongside trains – might be the most popular. Not a month goes by where I don’t see a new game, whether it be a war game or a strategic eurogame that the idea of advancing the glory of Rome doesn’t come into the equation. To be honest, that’s Ok by me since I am quite a fan of the theme – and the most recent game to grace my shelves along these lines is Stan Kordonskiy’s Nova Roma.

Kordonskiy is already a well-known designer, with credit for games like Rurik: Dawn of Kiev, Dice hospital and a couple of games in the Valeria series, so when I saw Nova Roma had launched I felt optimistic about what he would do with the theme. As it happens, Nova Roma just about lives up to my expectations – albeit...

Netflix Accents Regional Authenticity as Key Ingredient of European Series Slate
Image
Speaking at a panel held at the Mia Market in Rome, Netflix execs laid out a European strategy based on cultural and regional specificity alongside wider international format exchange.

“We want to create stories that are really rooted in our country’s culture and tradition,” said Italian content VP Eleonora Andreatta. “[And in order] to be authentic, that means recognizing the differences between one part of the country to the other.”

While Netflix’s recently wrapped adaptation of “The Leopard” is steeped in Sicilian history, the Matilda De Angelis-led returning series “The Law According to Lidia Poët” finds female emancipation in 19th century Turin. And if both titles look backward, both also share an impetus to shade Italian history in a more modern light.

Per Andreatta, Italian cinema’s glorious dolce vita boom had also left a bitter aftertaste by way of cultural stereotypes that lingered for years. Andreatta and her Rome-based...

Mes premières fois (2020)
Here’s What’s New on Netflix in June 2023
Mes premières fois (2020)
As we creep towards summer, Netflix has a hot new list of fresh content, including the final season of “Never Have I Ever,” the sophomore season of ‘Human Resources” and the highly anticipated sixth season of “Black Mirror.”

Kicking off the start of the month on mega streamer are lots of family-friendly goodies like both “Nanny McPhee” and “Nanny McPhee Returns,” “Kicking and Screaming,” “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius” and the “Angry Birds Movie.” But the adults won’t be left out of the conversation, as more mature flicks and series like “Jarhead,” “Funny People” and “We’re the Millers” are also hitting the platform this month.

And it wouldn’t be Netflix without its originals. “Take Care of Maya,” “Extraction 2” and the Sarah Snook-led “Run Rabit Run” will land on the site in June. And even if this isn’t enough to get you watching, Netflix will be streaming its Tudum festival on Saturday,...

Image
Netflix has released its weekly global top 10 chart for the week of June 5, showing how movies and television series have been doing on the streamer. Jennifer Lopez‘s “The Mother” has been dominating the English language film chart for weeks, and it finally dropped out of the top spot, but not before taking sixth place in the all-time movie chart. Read on for this week’s analysis.

Library films were the name of the game this week as “Dune” director Denis Villeneuve‘s 2013 thriller “Prisoners” and Mark Wahlberg‘s “Shooter” from 2007 were the top two movies in the English language film chart with 13.9 million and 12.8 million hours viewed, respectively. The 2011 Taylor Lautner action-thriller “Abduction,” directed by the late John Singleton, entered the chart in third place with 9.6 million hours viewed, then followed by “The Mother” in fourth place with 8.4 million viewing hours. “Prisoners” and “Abduction” were helped greatly by being...

Netflix Top 10 (Week of May 29): Jennifer Lopez’s ‘The Mother’ is unstoppable, while ‘Fubar’ continues to do well
Image
After almost a month streaming on Netflix, Jennifer Lopez‘s action-thriller “The Mother” continues to reign over the global top 10 chart for the week of May 29. Read on for this week’s analysis.

This week “The Mother” was once again the #1 English movie across the globe with 16.5 million hours viewed, but it also entered Netflix’s all-time chart as the eighth most-watched English language film on the streamer with 229.3 million viewing hours. It was only the number-one movie in Jordan, of all places, but it remained in the top 10 for 89 countries total.

The rest of that top 10 was made up of movies from other studios that previously had theatrical releases with DreamWorks Animation’s “The Boss Baby” taking second place with 10.6 million hours viewed, followed by “Missing” with 8.1 million viewing hours, and even Mark Wahlberg‘s 2007 action movie “Shooter” placed in the top five with 7.5 million viewing hours.

Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ Kicked off Netflix’s Top 10 by J.Lo’s ‘The Mother’
Image
It’s probably not getting an Oscar nominations anytime soon, but “The Mother” has bested Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” where it counts: Netflix viewership metrics. Jennifer Lopez’s thriller film has entered the streamer’s list of Top 10 most popular English-language films at No. 8, knocking Scorsese’s three-and-a-half hour mobster epic out of the upper echelon.

Netflix announced the news on Tuesday, along with the release of viewership numbers for the week of May 29 to June 4. “The Mother,” which has streamed for four weeks after premiering on Netflix May 12, has now been watched for a total of 229.30 million total hours by Netflix subscribers. That’s enough to place it between “Extraction” (231.340 million hours) and “Purple Hearts” (228.69 million hours) on the all-time list, and bump “The Irishman,” which peaked at 214.57 million hours viewed after its first 28 days on the streamer, from the list.

Netflix New Releases: June 2023
Image
Netflix gained a new competitor last month (sort of) when HBO Max and Discovery+ combined forces to create the confusingly-named Max. With its list of new releases for June 2023, however, Netflix doesn’t have too much to worry about.

This month is filled with some major Netflix original titles, not the least of which is The Witcher season 3 volume 1 on June 29. Though star Henry Cavill is set to leave the Polish folklore/video game adaptation in season 4, he remains very much entrenched as the titular Witcher in this next go-around. Other big TV hits include Manifest season 4 part 2 (June 2), Big Mouth spinoff Human Resources season 2 (June 9), and animated King Kong series Skull Island (June 22). That’s not even to mention the return of Black Mirror season 6. That still has yet to receive a release date but we have no doubt it will be properly epic once it arrives.

Netflix Top 10 (Week of May 22): J-Lo (‘The Mother’) and Schwarzenegger (‘Fubar’) top the charts
Image
Netflix has released its weekly chart of how movies and television series have been doing on the streamer, with the Jennifer Lopez action-thriller remaining in #1 over the Top 10 English film chart for the week of May 22, its third week in that position. Read on for this week’s analysis.

Before we get to the movies, it’s quite notable that Arnold Schwarzenegger made his debut on the streamer in a rare live action series called “Fubar,” created by Nick Santora (“Scorpion”), which debuted atop the English TV list with 88.9 million hours viewed, easily the most-viewed series of the week. It entered the Top 10 in 90 countries and was the #1 watched series in the United States, Canada and dozens of other countries across the globe.

It still received some stiff competition from the “All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” spin-off series, “Xo, Kitty,” its first season getting 63.8 million hours viewed last...

Netflix Expands Madrid Production Hub & Says It Will Reach More Than 30 Spanish Projects By 2023
Image
Netflix has said it will clock more than 30 Spanish-language projects across film, series, and non-fiction documentaries by the year’s end. The news was unveiled by Verónica Fernández, Director of Series for Spain and Portugal at an event to mark the expansion of the streamer’s production hub in Tres Cantos, Madrid.

Netflix has been available in Spain since 2015. The streamer’s Tres Cantos campus opened in 2019 and has since doubled its stage capacity and now features ten sets and a multi-purpose space that includes the company’s first in-house post-production facility.

Fernández said the new facilities “guarantee” that creatives in Spain will have the “means to continue to tell their stories.”

“No one thought we would have so much ongoing production and Spanish content,” she said at a Q&a session during the opening event. “We are 500 million Spanish speakers, but this content has gone beyond.”

Spanish TV Plays Co-Production Game as Streamers Fuel Growth of Original Series
Image
Three years ago, platforms were asking Spanish producers for full rights to their TV fiction projects for all territories.

Times have changed. As platforms’ revenues taper off or slow in growth, originals are less habitual. Co-production is increasingly becoming the name of the game.

A first-phase boom was triggered by Netflix titles “Money Heist” and “Elite.”

Now, Spain is maintaining its momentum, remaining a priority region for Netflix, HBO Max and Prime Video. Newcomers Disney+, Paramount+ and Lionsgate+ have unveiled their first original productions.

Local champions, Telefonica’s paybox Movistar+ and Atresmedia’s platform Atresplayer Premium, harbor strong artistic ambitions.

As platforms pause production in parts of the world, and Netflix rejigs its business model, Spain’s TV producers are ringing their options, plunging ever more into co-production.

“The market is being rationalized and shared production models don’t leave all the rights in the platform’s hands,” says Caroline Servy,...

Michal Vinik’s ‘Valeria Is Getting Married’ Boarded by M-Appeal (Exclusive)
Image
M-Appeal has acquired world sales rights to Michal Vinik’s “Valeria Is Getting Married,” which focuses on two Ukrainian sisters, one already living in Israel, having entered a marriage arranged online, and the another considering doing the same.

The film marks the second collaboration between the German sales outfit and the Tel Aviv-based director, following her debut feature film “Barash.” It is the third time M-Appeal has teamed with Israeli production company Lama Films, following their partnership on “Barash” and “Working Woman.”

Maren Kroymann, M-Appeal’s managing director, said: “We are very excited to continue our collaboration with Michal, whose films are entertaining, accessible, and feminist in how they address important subjects. In ‘Valeria,’ she deconstructs widely spread preconceptions and prejudices about Ukrainian women, which have become much more visible now as so many women are fleeing the war.”

Kate del Castillo to Star in ‘A Beautiful Lie’ for Pantaya, Endemol Shine Boomdog, Cholawood (Exclusive)
Image
“La Reina del Sur” star Kate del Castillo is set to play the lead in “A Beautiful Lie,” a modern take in Spanish on Leo Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina.”

Del Castillo will also executive produce the series out of her Cholawood Productions label, along with two other forces on the upscale Spanish-language TV scene, premium U.S. Spanish-language streaming platform Pantaya and Endemol Shine Boomdog, a division of Banijay Americas.

The six-part series co-production, based on the 2015 adaptation from Banijay-owned Endemol Shine Australia, will represent a modern retelling of Tolstoy’s celebrated novel, his first real novel by his own estimation and reckoned by many to be one of the greatest works of fiction ever written.

“A Beautiful Lie” is announced as an event series – a status that is almost inevitable in any major fiction starring Del Castillo and backed by companies of the ambition of Esb and Pantaya.

Filming on Netflix teen series “Tú no eres especial” (“You’re Nothing Special”) kicked-off July 8, becoming the streaming giant’s first TV series entirely filmed in Spain’s northern region of Navarre.

‘Valeria’ Gives ‘Sex and the City’ Feels Minus The City, Leaving The Sex As a Big Part of Its Plot
Image
Photo: ‘Valeria’/Netflix When a twenty-eight-year-old writer fails to deliver her manuscript in an attempt for an erotic novel, her life begins to fall apart. 'Valeria' tells the story of an aspiring writer whose life crumbles in front of our eyes. Struggling with marriage, 'Valeria' hits many romantic comedy clichés and takes you on a voyage of friendships and lovable flings. ‘Sex and the City,’ Minus the City, but Big On The Sex 'Valeria' suggests the series main character in its title, but the story does not move forward if it's not for Valeria's tight relationship with her three best friends. The four girls have an incredible raw relationship, completely trusting each other even when it comes to making the most important decisions of their lives. They enviably only have trust issues when it comes to the men surrounding them, making their friendships extremely honest and warm.

Image
We’re deep into the dog days of summer, but Netflix’s list of new releases for August 2021 feels like fall.

That is to say that Netflix has some really good library TV titles this month that harken back to the glory days of the fall TV network calendar. August 1 sees the arrival of two of the best NBC shows of all time: Tina Fey comedy 30 Rock, and life-affirming (American) football drama Friday Night Lights. If you’ve not seen either, catch up with them both. That’s an order.

Netflix Added 4 New Movies And 9 New TV Shows This Weekend
Image
Netflix continues to dominate the streaming competition, with the platform recently putting out a range of intriguing trailers for upcoming projects while also seeing some surprising choices pull in huge amounts of subscribers. Furthermore, the streamer put out thirteen new titles this weekend, including an underrated Jamie Foxx thriller that’s already doing well with audiences, as well as a host of returning and new television shows. But what are the best new movies and series to enjoy on Netflix at the moment?

First up is Sleepless, the previously mentioned Jamie Foxx thriller from 2017, where his character infiltrates a gang to rescue his son. We also get some strong turns from Scoot McNairy and David Harbour in a film that doesn’t have the kindest critical reputation, but has still managed to climb to #2 in the Netflix movie charts this weekend. Also new, or at least returning, on Netflix is the Jennifer Lawrence-starring,...

Greg Daniels
Looking for what’s coming to Netflix UK this month? Click here instead!

While much of the entertainment world is in lockdown and in danger of drying up their respective content pipelines soon, Netflix has claimed that they have more than enough finished projects and business will continue as usual. While that may seem to be an outlandish boast, it’s hard to look at Netflix’s new releases for May 2020 and not think “man, they’re really just not stopping.”

Netflix’s new releases for May 2020 are positively loaded with new Netflix originals, intriguing recent films, and even some fun new stock TV shows. Office creator Greg Daniels latest project, Space Force, premieres on May 29 and will likely be Netflix’s big blockbuster this month. Having access to Daniels, Steve Carell, John Malkovich, Lisa Kudrow, and more will do that for a project.

Elsewhere on the Netflix original front,...
