When Julia Roberts attended the French Césars this March, Jean-Pascal Zadi was given the task of introducing the Erin Brockovich Oscar-winning actress.
The comic actor and director had Roberts in fits as he drew comparisons between their big toothy smiles and explained she could apply for political asylum if she were feeling the heat back home, suggesting she could get tips from actor Abou Sangaré, who was sitting a few seats behind.
Guinea-born Sangaré, who won Cannes’ Un Certain Regard Best Actor prize in 2024 for his performance as an undocumented migrant in Souleymane’s Story and would be feted with Best Male Revelation that evening, had just escaped deportation from France after securing a work permit in January.
The tone of the humor was typical of Zadi, who four years previously also won Best Male Revelation for Simply Black, his riotously, impolitically correct comedy tackling the experiences of Black people in France.

There is a rich tradition of crime meets comedy — in television, in film, and even in other countries. From “Ocean’s Eleven” to “The Nice Guys” and “The Afterparty” on Apple TV+, it’s always fun to imagine the gritty underworld filled with hilarious characters that don’t belong there. In India, Hindi movies like “Andaz Apna Apna” and “Hera Pheri” and “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro” scratch the same itch, infusing life-or-death stakes of illegal activity with good old-fashioned hijinks. It’s the spirit alive and well in “Deli Boys,” the 10-episode Hulu debut now available to stream.
Created by Abdullah Saeed, “Deli Boys” follows brothers Raj (Saagar Shaikh) and Mir (Asif Ali) after the sudden death of their father (Iqbal Theba) when they inherit a family business that couldn’t be further from what they imagined. The body is barely cold before they’re enveloped in a world of drugs and murder,...

Subscribers to Netflix love such original thrillers as Carry-On and Rebel Ridge, it seems, with the films receiving even higher viewing numbers than Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.
Netflix has released its viewership figures for the second half of 2024, and they provide a (possibly) interesting bit of insight into its subscribers’ tastes.
The most obvious take-away is that Netflix customers really like their thrillers; festive airport nailbiter Carry-On, starring Taron Edgerton, continues to be one of the most successful original films the streaming firm has released in years. Despite releasing right at the end of last year, it was still the platform’s most-watched movie with 137.3m views.
In January, Carry-On was Netflix’s fifth most-watched movie of all time. A few weeks on, and it’s climbed to the third position with a total of 169.2m views, placing it just behind Don’t Look Up (171.4m) and Red Notice (230.9m). Releasing a high-concept,...

There have always been two sides to the music of Nigerien guitarist and bandleader Mdou Moctar: the electric and the acoustic, the sweaty ballroom and the evening campfire, the wedding dance and the lament. If Mdou Moctar’s terrific 2024 album Funeral for Justice was the electric sound of the furious political protest, Tears of Injustice is the mourning after, the bonding that takes place when people huddle together for strength as your friends are dying and your enemies are in power.

Tom Cruise, a man who seems to have spent more time in the air than on the ground, has achieved yet another milestone. He’s known for his dedication to performing cinema’s most death-defying stunts, and he’s mostly airborne during them. Just when we thought his accomplishments could not get any loftier, Cruise got recognition from one of the leading aviation organizations in the world.
On Feb. 8, Tom Cruise was awarded the Grand Medaille of the Aero-Club de France, the oldest and most prestigious aeronautical institution in the world. The award, presented by the institution’s president, Catherine Maunoury, recognizes Cruise “for his significant contribution to the history of aviation and inspiring future pilots” and it is a testament to his passion for flight and his ability to stun the entire world with his aerial exploits.

When Charles Durning appeared on NCIS in 2004, he was neither a stranger to acting nor without knowledge of the military. The WWII veteran was a long-time presence on big and small screens. Durning's role as Corporal Earnie Yost on NCIS stood apart from many of his other roles, however, because it earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.
His appearance on NCIS wasn't Durning's first nomination in the category. He was previously nominated for playing Michael Gavin on Rescue Me and Thomas Finnegan on Homicide: Life on the Streets. Additional praise for Durning came with Oscar nominations for his roles in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) and To Be or Not to Be (1983).

The White Collar reboot has been confirmed, and the revival will finally answer the show's thrilling cliffhangers from the series finale back in 2014. The reboot, titled White Collar Renaissance, will feature several returning White Collar actors, including Matt Bomber as Neal Caffrey, Tim DeKay as Peter Burke, and Tiffani Thiessen as Elizabeth Burke. As 10 years have passed since the finale, the reboot is set to feature exciting new storylines that represent shifting political and technological developments.
The White Collar revival has been widely compared to Suits LA, another upcoming procedural whose flagship series found its start on network television before moving to streaming. White Collar shares many similarities to popular shows, but it found its niche by focusing on white-collar, luxurious crimes, such as art theft and forgery. Given White Collar's track record and its excellent take on crime dramas, White Collar Renaissance will surely follow suit with fascinating narratives centered on high crime.

It doesn’t translate perfectly into English, but “Emilia Pérez” costume designer and artistic director Virginie Montel has a theory of mise-en-scene, and all of the sets, background actors, and details that it entails. “Corps make decor,” she told IndieWire. It’s the people, and how they look and move and feel, that make a movie world really real.
Accordingly, Montel was determined to bring a high level of stylization to the contemporary costumes of the Netflix musical directed by Jacques Audiard. The production team realized they needed to shoot the film on stages in France — a place with decidedly different airs than the Mexico City of cartels — and so a lot of work fell on Montel to make the world of the film and each of its musical numbers feel richly lived in.

Agatha Christie is one of the biggest titans in the detective and mystery literary genres, and the best Agatha Christie books combine her talent for weaving complex stories with multifaceted, realistic characters. Christie was born in 1890 and passed away in 1976, and in her 85 years, she wrote 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections and was a central figure in the "Golden Age of Detective Fiction". Her stories are sometimes one-offs, their own contained universes, and often feature her now world-famous detective characters, Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple.
Recorded by Guinness World Records as the best-selling writer of all time, there are dozens of TV and movie adaptations of Agatha Christie books, including Kenneth Branaghs Murder on the Orient Express. Many modern detective, mystery, and whodunit stories can trace their inspiration back to Christie. Only Sir Arthur Conan Doyle may be said to have contributed more to the genre, and he is not as prolific as Christie.

Gory Hindi action film Kill opens on 827 screens via Roadside Attractions this weekend. It’s the distributor’s first foray into Indian film, which is having another moment after two pics hit the top 10 in North America last week. This is a crowded theatrical market with wide releases piling in and some high-profile indie holdovers. New indie debuts include Mother Couch and The Nature of Love in NYC.
Kill isn’t traditional Bollywood, shorter at an hour forty five minutes and without song and dance numbers in between the action. It debuted at the Toronto Film Festival’s Midnight Madness section, also screening at Fantastic Fest, Beyond Fest and last month at Tribeca.

The shark threat in "Under Paris" expands beyond the city, putting the whole world in danger. From London to Bangkok, major cities are now infested with aggressive sharks seeking prey. The closing credits imply a global crisis, with sharks now spreading to all corners of the world.
Netflix's over-the-top shark thriller Under Paris has proved hugely popular thanks to its unlikely combination of shark attacks and Parisien culture, but the film's finale hints that the next installment of the story may expand the action beyond the City of Light. In Under Paris' ending, it is revealed that the terrifying shark that's been stalking the murky waters of the Seine is just the tip of the toothy iceberg threatening to crash into the world's greatest cities. While the scale of the threat isn't immediately clear, Under Paris' credits scene lays plain the extent to which humanity is now in danger.

The triptych drama is the first film so far to receive a four (excellent), both from Le Meduza’s Anton Dolin and Screen’s own critic. Others were less convinced with Mathieu Macharet (France’s Le Monde) and Stephanie Zacharek (US Time) both giving it just one (poor).
