Director Sara Summa states she wanted non-actors for the movie. So, while she was scouting for locations she ran into a guy working at a gas station who really stuck in her head to play Matteo. He repeatedly said no until he suggested she met his nephew, who supposedly looked just like him. When they met, Summa agreed they were very alike and hired him to play the son of the family.
