good effort

"New Mars" has the look and feel of an undergraduate capstone project filmed on a college campus in the middle of the night. The story is effective enough - two young people rebel against the rules of a subterranean colony on Mars where marriages are arranged "for the common good", which may explain why everyone looks so miserable. The ending doesn't quite work, shoehorning in a major plot twist without providing an opportunity to reflect on its implications before the credits roll. Nevertheless, the film still deserves kudos for creating a vaguely oppressive mood with dark, brooding visuals and very little dialogue.
