Ewan McGregor, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded in front of an audience at the Newport Beach Film Festival, has been one of the world’s most admired screen actors for some 30 years.
The Scotsman, 53, shot to stardom in 1995’s Trainspotting, and has since done standout work in films such as 1998’s Velvet Goldmine, George Lucas’ second Star Wars trilogy (1999-2005), 2001’s Moulin Rouge!, 2003’s Big Fish, 2010’s The Ghost Writer, 2011’s Beginners and 2012’s The Impossible, and on TV limited series including Fargo (2017), Halston (2021) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022).
But rarely, if ever, has McGregor’s work generated the degree of enthusiasm — from critics and the general public alike — that he has garnered for his performance in the 2024 Paramount+ limited series A Gentleman in Moscow, a dramedy in which he plays Count Alexander “Sasha” Rostov, an aristocrat whose life is upended by the Russian Revolution,...

It is the Eisenhower era, a time of post-war promise in California, a place for new beginnings and new love. Into this setting, Shannon Pufahl placed her debut novel On Swift Horses, which was a prize winner for lesbian fiction, but in the movie version, this becomes a more complicated romantic drama, mixed with gambling, noir-ish tones, horse racing and a complex love triangle that don’t all mesh as well as they might, but give this attractive and talented cast an “A” for trying to make it all plausible.

The book was originally published in the U.S. on May 21 by Simon & Schuster. Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler will produce under their Killer Films banner.
Dorn’s other works include “Exalted,” “Bad Lawyer,” and “Vagablonde.” Her next novel, “American Spirits,” is forthcoming from Simon & Schuster. She is repped by Gersh and Sanford J. Greenburger Associates for publishing.

The Ryan Murphy legal drama starring Kim Kardashian, All's Fair, is getting a boost to its cast. The ensemble series by Murphy is taking place in his TV universe, so naturally, the new additions to the cast include his regular muses. It has been revealed that Sarah Paulson, Niecy Nash, Teyana Taylor, and Naomi Watts are all joining Kardashian and Glenn Close for the Hulu TV show which will inaugurate Murphy's contract with the streamer.
Kardashian has been attached to the ensemble drama from the very start. It seems Murphy was more than impressed with her performance in American Horror Story: Delicate, the latest iteration of the horror anthology series which also featured Emma Roberts and Cara Delevingne. Per Variety, Kardashian will play a divorce lawyer in the rocky territory of Los Angeles' judicial system. The new cast is set to join the all-star team of lawyers led by Close.

“Feud: Bette and Joan” took the Emmys by storm in 2017, with the first season of the Ryan Murphy anthology show receiving rave reviews for its depiction of the rivalry between actresses Bette Davis (Susan Sarandon) and Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange).
Season two will hope to match that Emmy success (more on that later) with its portrayal of Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) and his falling out with a group of New York high society socialites known as the Swans. Capote wrote a fictionalized account of the Swans’ dramatic lives, leading to the Swans vowing revenge for betraying their confidence.
The glossy show is typically gorgeous, scandalous, and theatrical while the performances are all top-drawer. Hollander dazzles in the lead role as Capote, which is no mean feat considering the late, great Philip Seymour-Hoffman won the Best Actor Oscar for his turn as Capote in 2005’s “Capote”). For the last seven years, Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead have been searching for a project to work on together. At one point, they were certain they had found the perfect match.
“We thought we had something, but someone else made it in the meantime,” McGregor says with a laugh. “We didn’t know! It was like, ‘How’s it going with that?’ And we Googled and someone fucking made it!”
It’s now been eight years since they met on the set of “Fargo” in 2016, and two years since they tied the knot. But they’re still in the honeymoon stage. During our photoshoot, they effortlessly pose together, spending much of their time looking into each other’s eyes with little direction whatsoever.
This loving interaction was on also on display during our subsequent interview, with the pair holding hands, touching each other’s faces lovingly after sharing...

While there is certainly an audience that knows him best for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars franchise, Ewan McGregor is an actor of great versatility. Its been impressive that despite his fame, McGregor often chooses character-driven projects over more commercial fare. In recent years, hes shown his dedication to prestigious television with acclaimed performances in the third season of Fargo, the biopic series Halston, and emotional spy thriller A Gentleman In Moscow. Though A Gentleman In Moscow has earned rave reviews, McGregor first tried out the espionage genre in a 2016 adaptation of the John le Carre novel, Our Kind of Traitor.

Ewan McGregor's role in "A Gentleman in Moscow" showcases his range in a quirky yet dramatic historical drama. Despite being fictional, the show weaves real-life events with fiction in an entertaining and provocative manner. McGregor's Emmy-winning performance in "Halston" is distinct from his hero roles, deserving of more attention and reassessment.

Intimacy coordinators, basically delicate choreographers for sex scenes, are not new to Hollywood productions. But this may be a first.
For the Paramount+ with Showtime limited series “A Gentleman in Moscow,” in which Ewan McGregor plays a Russian aristocrat banished to a bleak hotel room during the early days of the Soviet Union, the actor told Britain’s Radio Times that the production still used an intimacy coordinator for one romantic sequence, even though his scene partner was Mary Elizabeth Winstead, his wife of two years.
“We did have an intimacy coordinator!” McGregor said, when it was suggested he probably didn’t need one. “It’s still necessary, because it’s also about the crew, and it’s odd to be naked in front of people, it’s odd to be intimate in front of the camera. Plot: Acclaimed writer Truman Capote surrounded himself with a coterie of society’s most elite women – rich, glamorous socialites who defined a bygone era of high society New York – whom he nicknamed “the swans.” Enchanted and captivated by these doyennes, Capote ingratiated himself into their lives, befriending them and becoming their confidante, only to ultimately betray them by writing a thinly veiled fictionalization of their lives, exposing their most intimate secrets. When an excerpt from the book, Answered Prayers, Capote’s planned magnum opus, was published in Esquire, it effectively destroyed his relationship with his swans, banished him from the high society he so loved and sent him into a spiral of self-destruction from which he would ultimately never recover.

The new HBO series “The Gilded Age” hails from “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes, and much like that hit period series, this one features a lot of characters. Several cadres of characters keep the plot pivoting back and forth between households and prominent locations around 1890s New York, as the show tells a story of New York City on the cusp of change, where the battle between old money and new money — as well as old and new ways of doing things — is being fought.
A mix of veteran actors and actresses balance out some newer talent in Julian Fellowes’ latest fictional show — from “Sex and the City’s” Cynthia Nixon to Meryl Streep’s youngest daughter Louisa Jacobson, who plays a main heroine at the heart of aristocratic New York City.

Oscar nominee Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia) brings Thomas Mallon’s 2007 bestselling novel Fellow Travelers to life in a Showtime limited series starring Matt Bomer (The Normal Heart) and Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton). The first episode of the eight-episode season will stream on Friday, October 27, 2023 on Paramount+ with Showtime before premiering on Showtime on October 29 at 9pm Et/Pt.
“Bomer plays charismatic Hawkins Fuller, who maintains a financially rewarding, behind-the-scenes career in politics. Hawkins avoids emotional entanglements – until he meets Tim Laughlin (Bailey), a young man who’s brimming with idealism and religious faith. They begin a romance just as Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare war on ‘subversives and sexual deviants,’ initiating one of the darkest periods in 20th-century American history,” reads Showtime’s synopsis.

Frédéric Tcheng on celebrating Bethann Hardison: “I think it’s really important to see what Bethann did and the historical movement she created.” Photo: Oliviero Toscano, courtesy of Magnolia Pictures
When I spoke with Tribeca Film Festival Artistic Director Frédéric Boyer on Zoom from Paris, months before the 22nd edition, he noted Frédéric Tcheng and Bethann Hardison’s Invisible Beauty (produced by Lisa Cortes of Harold Crooks and Judd Tully’s The Melt Goes on Forever: The Art & Times of David Hammons) as one of the highlights to see and commented: “We play all the films by Frédéric Tcheng (Halston and the World première of Dior And I). In a move not attempted by actors at San Diego Comic-Con, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Trainspotting actor Ewan McGregor took the stage at the Javits Center today at New York Comic-Con to discuss himself, not struck work, during what is the 91st day of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
“This is the first thing like this I’ve done, and it’s been a big decision to do it, but I really wanted to take part,” said McGregor, who also didn’t represent or speak of any studio during the onstage convo.
“It’s difficult for us to be up here and not be allowed to talk about our actual films,” he added. “I’m sure you would want to hear about [them], so I apologize for that. But that’s just the way we have to do it, I suppose.”

There is much that is lovely to gaze upon in the elegantly tailored documentary “Invisible Beauty,” about fashion maverick Bethann Hardison, whose role in her industry, starting in the late ’60s and continuing into the present, has been remarkable personally and game-changing culturally.
Those five decades — hers and the industry’s — are expertly woven together by co-directors Hardison and Frédéric Tcheng, using a cache of personal photos, a wealth of archival images, clips and interviews sewn together by Hardison’s sharing of recollections and insights. The film is also buoyed by a delicate, sometimes moody piano-led score courtesy of Marc Anthony Thompson, with some additionally vivid musical choices that match the energy of the late, “Black is Beautiful” ’60s and the fashion-fast-forward ’70s.
When there were shifts in how the fashion industry viewed models of color, Hardison was there as participant but more often catalyst. She was one...

Ewan McGregor not only received a lifetime achievement award, but also much love and adoration during a brief, but emotional ceremony at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Saturday night.
During the event at the big cinema celebration in the Czech spa town, organizers and fans feted the Scottish actor, director and producer as the President’s Award for lifetime achievement was bestowed upon him. A warm welcome to McGregor by a host was followed by a particularly well-received career highlights reel that repeatedly drew laughs and cheers for scenes from the likes of the Star Wars universe, I Love You Phillip Morris and, of course, Trainspotting.

After a $300 million dollar deal, Ryan Murphy is heading back to where he started — sort of. The “Glee” and “American Horror Story” creator is reportedly planning to leave Netflix for a new deal with the Disney Corporation, bringing him back into the fold with many of his collaborators from his time at 20th Century Fox TV.
According to a report from Bloomberg on Tuesday, Murphy has not finalized his deal with Disney yet, but has spent the past year negotiating with the House of Mouse and reportedly managed to iron out the details before the Writer’s Strike began in May. Murphy’s Netflix deal, which was first signed in 2018, will expire this July.
If the deal goes through, it will reunite Murphy with Dana Walden, who served as the CEO and head of Fox Television when Murphy worked there from 2003, with the premiere of his show “Nip/Tuck,” to 2018. Under Walden’s leadership,...

Hello there! Among the Emmy categories that “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” is looking to get nominated in, Best Movie/Limited Actor for its star Daniel Radcliffe is right at the top along with Best TV Movie. The Roku Channel’s hit telefilm may seem like an unconventional nominee, but there are several promising factors that are working in his favor.
The fact that the movie is a flat-out comedy could be viewed as something of an obstacle for it to overcome. But, performances from comedic-dramas have scored noms here, including Jeff Bridges for “A Dog Year” (2010) and Hugh Grant for “A Very English Scandal” (2019). We have also seen three comedy performances contend in this category: two for Ricky Gervais for “Extras: The Extra Special Series Finale” (2008) and “Derek: The Special” (2015) and one for Jesse Plemons for “Black Mirror: USS Callister” (2018).

Trainspotting is a cult classic of the '90s that gathers a brilliant young cast to tell a harrowing story about characters mixed up in drugs. Set in Edinburgh in the late '80s, the movie revolves around a group of delinquents at the moment they decide to overcome their heroin addiction and find a better future for themselves. Yet, what seems easy in theory turns out to be nearly impossible with the constant allure of friends and a series of tragedies that bring them right back to their hopeless state.
Trainspotting starts off as a comedy and quickly gives way to drama, exploring the perspective of each character in the face of compulsion, death, and despair. The movie's reputation only grew stronger as the years went by, eventually earning a sequel with the original cast 20 years later. Trainspotting is still considered Danny Boyle's best movie, and it introduced...

By this fall Jessica Chastain could be three-quarters of the way to Egot. She won an Oscar last year for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” She’s a Tony contender for her Broadway role in “A Doll’s House.” And she has a good chance of winning the Emmy for Best Movie/Limited Actress for playing country legend Tammy Wynette in “George and Tammy.”
“George and Tammy” is a Showtime limited series that explores the lives and careers of country music supercouple Tammy Wynette and George Jones (played by Michael Shannon). The performance earned Chastain a Golden Globe nomination for Best TV Movie/Limited Actress, which she lost to reigning Emmy champ Amanda Seyfried (“The Dropout”). But then Chastain pulled off an upset by beating Seyfried at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The SAG Awards are presented by industry peers just like the Emmys are, so that was a significant result.

Kieran Culkin is opening up about growing up with his massive and famous family in New York City. Kieran, who stars as Roman Roy on "Succession," is one of seven kids shared by Kit Culkin and Patricia Brentrup. The pair never married, though their split in the 1990s and ensuing custody battle became tabloid fodder because Kieran's brother Macaulay had become very famous after starring in 1990's "Home Alone" franchise. Kieran revealed in an interview with Esquire published March 27 that his dad - an actor himself - had all seven try to be actors, though only Macaulay (who his siblings call Mack), Kieran, and Rory pursued it seriously.
The family grew up in the Yorkville section of Manhattan, and Kieran says that even though he was just a kid himself, he felt bad for the way fame affected Macaulay's life. "Poor f*cking guy," he told Esquire of his brother.

“Star Wars” is finally getting some recognition for its acting talents. A galaxy far, far away has always been appreciated for its below-the-line work but among the cast only Alec Guinness earned an Oscar nomination across the 11 live-action movies (Best Supporting Actor for “A New Hope” in 1978). One of the small screen expansions of the franchise, “The Mandalorian,” has reaped four Emmy bids for its cast: in 2020, Giancarlo Esposito contended for his guest role while Taika Waititi was up for voicing Ig-11; in 2021, Esposito was promoted to series regular and reaped a supporting bid while Timothy Olyphant and Carl Weathers vied against each other for their guest turns.
That trend looks to continue this year thanks to the influx of “Star Wars” shows gracing our screens on Disney+. Here are six actors who could earn Emmy bids for “Star Wars” shows.

How well do fact-based limited and anthology series perform at the Emmys? (Spoiler alert: very well)
Just as limited and anthology series based on real events have taken over the TV landscape, they have taken over the Emmys. But how well have programs of this particular genre actually gone over with the academy throughout the past few years?
Let’s take a look back at all nominations earned by limited and anthology series starting in 2015; that’s the year in which the rules were tweaked to require that a program can only compete as a limited series if it has a minimum of two episodes with a total running time of at least 150 minutes, tells a complete, non-recurring story, and doesn’t have an ongoing storyline and/or main characters in subsequent seasons.
This rule change came just a year after limited series (referred to as “miniseries” at the time) and TV movies were once again split up into separate program categories, undoing a three-year-old change that consolidated the two awards.

Progress in the face of systemic injustice does not occur naturally, it is urged along by sheer force of will — often by one radical visionary. In the case of the fashion industry’s racism, that person is Bethann Hardison. A trailblazing model in the 1970s, she became one of the most important agents of the ’90s, discovering the first male supermodel Tyson Beckford and mentoring Naomi Campbell and Iman. When fickle trends threatened to erase all of her hard work in the aughts, she boldly called out the industry’s blatantly racist casting practices, causing a seismic shift once and for all.

Prolific TV producer Ryan Murphy accepted the Carol Burnett Award at the Golden Globes on Tuesday night, paying tribute to many of the people he has worked with in front of and behind the screen.
Murphy ran through some of the highlights of his career — Michaela Jaé Rodriguez becoming the first trans actress to win a Golden Globe, seeing “Pose” star Billy Porter, who introduced him, wearing a black tuxedo gown on the Oscars red carpet, and working with actors such as Niecy Nash, Matt Bomer and Jeremy Pope, who were able to present their true selves on screen.
“When I was a young person at home in the ’70s watching ‘The Carol Burnett Show,’ I never ever saw a person like me getting an award or even being a character on a TV show. It’s hard being an LGBTQ kid in America. In fact, all over the world,...

In less than a quarter century, Ryan Murphy has produced 20 TV series (and counting), which means he is only six such credits away from outpacing the legendary Norman Lear. After being honored with the Producers Guild of America’s Norman Lear Award in 2018, Murphy is now going to follow Lear as the next recipient of the Carol Burnett Golden Globe Award for career achievement in television. Like his predecessor, he has earned this tribute because he has made a name for himself as an innovative and inclusive creator whose body of work constitutes its own distinct era within TV history.
At 57, Murphy is the youngest Carol Burnett Award honoree so far. After originally being bestowed upon its namesake (85) in 2019, the special prize has gone to Ellen DeGeneres and Lear. According to Hollywood Foreign Press Association President Helen Hoehne, Murphy was chosen because of his unique ability to “enthrall audiences with...
