The opera was originally written and composed for television by Pentti Saaritsa and Pehr Henrik Nordgren respectively. It was commissioned by the Finnish Broadcasting Company, being one of the two operas composed by Nordgren (the other was "Den svarte munken", The Black Monk, from 1981).
