Everyone knows about "Pokémon" and Ash Ketchum's 25-year journey to becoming a true Pokémon Master. But just two short years after "Pokémon" began airing and sparked a global cultural phenomenon known as Pokémania, along came another anime about kids befriending small pocked-sized monsters that could evolve and fight other monsters. That anime is "Digimon," and for many '90s kids, it was the far superior show.

The reason is simple: when it comes to anime shows for kids, few seemed as profound or had a story as relatable and meaningful as that of "Digimon Adventure." Released in 1999, at a time when the computer era was reaching new heights and internet use was becoming increasingly common, "Digimon" taught kids important life lessons. It treated them as being mature enough to handle complex and dark subjects, like saying goodbye to friends and childhood itself, as well as many a traumatic character death scene.

Few people have been around the Digimon franchise as long as Hiromi Seki. A producer at Toei Animation, she’s been involved with Digimon since 1999’s Digimon Adventure and has seen it evolve through many series and generations of both fans and characters. I was able to interview her at the 2024 New York Comic-Con where we talked about the early days of the digital monsters, the reason why the characters continue to resonate with fans, and even got a glimpse into the difference between producing a Digimon series and a Digimon film. Thank you so much for participating in this interview. Could you begin by introducing yourself and telling us a little bit about your relationship with the Digimon series. Hiromi Seki : I’ve been the producer at Toei Animation at the planning and sales department for about 40 years now. And when it comes to the Digimon series, I...

2024 is the 25th anniversary of the Digimon anime, and Hiromi Seki, one of the series' original producers, was in attendance at the New York City event celebrating the occasion on October 16th, 2024. Including the original Digimon Adventure, Seki has worked on 13 different Digimon series and movies. This includes the franchise's most recent films, Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna and Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning.

In an exclusive interview with Cbr, Digimon producer Hiromi Seki spoke about her relationship with the franchise, weight-lifting, and Magical DoReMi. She also reflected on her illustrious career in anime, as well as Digimon's unexpected success. Seki then discussed what the two most recent films in the franchise mean to her, and what she wants to accomplish with Digimon moving forward.

Cbr: What's something you like to do for fun that would surprise people?

Hiromi Seki: I like to go to the gym and do weight training to strengthen my muscles.

Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna was released in Japan on February 21st, 2020. The anime movie serves as both a finale for Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure tri., as well as a precursor to 2023's Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning. While Last Evolution Kizuna was originally slated for a North American release in 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic prevented this. After four years, the movie was finally and officially screened in America for the first time on October 16th, 2024, in celebration of Digimon's 25th anniversary.

Last Evolution Kizuna follows a college-aged Tai Kamiya and Matt Ishida as they confront the reality that they're growing up, and face the threat of being separated from their lifelong Digimon partners, Agumon and Gabumon, forever. At the same time, they and the other original DigiDestined are forced to team up with the American genius Menoa Bellucci to stop the mysterious Eosmon from robbing every DigiDestined of their consciousness.

Digimon Adventure first aired in Japan on March 7th, 1999. Over the next year, viewers followed Tai, Matt, and the rest of the DigiDestined as they explored the Digital World, learned more about themselves, bonded with their partner Digimon, and battled evil villains. The series became more popular than Toei Animation ever imagined, especially following its international release, leading to Digimon still being beloved, and still releasing new content across multiple forms of media, 25 years later.

On October 16th, 2024, Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna premiered in America for the first time in celebration of the series' 25th anniversary. This screening was hosted by Japan Society, in collaboration with Bandai and Toei Animation, in New York City as a part of a larger event, featuring photo-ops, giveaways, and an appearance by one of the most prominent producers in the history of the Digimon anime, Hiromi Seki. The Digimon franchise has grown into a successful multimedia giant with movies, multiple series, and games under its belt. Yet, for the fans of the original 1999 series, the DigiDestined will forever be remembered as a group of ambitious children who would do anything to save the world. Although it's rarely the case that long-running adventure series end up giving fans a consolidated conclusion, Digimon tried to offer closure to fans in some capacity.

Digimon Adventure 02 was the only proper sequel to the Digimon Adventure (1999), with an ending that showcased the fate of the original and the new DigiDestined. While the franchise reintroduced Tai and co in Digimon Adventure tri., it was eventually Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna that offered the necessary emotional buildup that may have led to 02s conclusion. Fortunately, all the DigiDestined survived their perilous adventures and lived to have thriving futures.

Tai Went On To Become...

Digimon Frontier introduced a fresh perspective with DigiDestined becoming Digimon themselves, a departure from the traditional partner dynamic. Cherubimon and Lucemon emerge as memorable villains, adding depth and intrigue to the series, with well-developed backstories and designs. Despite mixed reactions, Digimon Frontier offers unique storylines and characters, earning its place within the Digital World lore.

Originally debuting in 1999 with the animated short Digimon Adventure, the franchise surrounding the Digital World and its inhabitants has been showcased in a variety of ways over the years, and none of these adventures is as polarized as Digimon Frontier. Including its first season, Digimon has been reinvented with a new cast and their digital companions nine times, each one unique, but overall carrying the same core concepts. Frontier, however, attempted to break the mold in more ways than just updating the opening theme, and in return received what could only be described as a mixed reaction.

Since its launch in 1997, the Digimon franchise has gone from strength to strength. While the franchise started as a collection of virtual pet toys, it soon branched out into video games, manga, and anime. The Digimon anime franchise quickly developed a dedicated fanbase of its own, to the point that it overshadowed the digital pets in many people's minds.

One of the best things about the various monsters that make up theDigimonworld is the sheer variety of their designs. A great example of this is the dinosaur-inspired Digimon, as while many of the Digimon share a common point of inspiration, this collection of monsters is packed with unique and varied designs. But which dinosaur is the coolest, and which is so uncool that even Alan Grant would leave it alone?

It has been known for a while that the Blu-ray edition of the Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning movie will come out on May 29, 2024 in Japan, and while some fans had been worried about a potentially long(er) wait for the US release, we can confirm that the movie will be released not long after the Japanese edition. Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning, the theatrical 2023 anime movie based on the first two Digimon Adventure TV series, is coming to home media thanks to a new partnership between Shout! Studios and Toei Animation.

In a press release presented by the two companies, Shout! and Toei have signed a multi-year deal for the home media release of the sequel to Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna. This deal provides "Shout! Studios with North American home entertainment distribution rights to Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning for cross-platform releases in the U.S. and Canada, including all packaged media and electronic sell-through digital rights." Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning will be released in physical and digital formats in 2024. Both companies promise more exciting news for anime fans in the lead-up to the movie's release as the Digimon franchise celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

Since it started in the '90s, Digimon has been a top-rated anime franchise, expanding into several series, videogames, and even a Tgc game. Regardless, Digimon Adventure – its first series – remains a fan favorite. Since the franchise sees them go from kids to adults, the story of the first eight DigiDestined accompanied thousands of '90s kids who grew up alongside Tai, Matt, Sora, Izzy, Mimi, Joe, T.K., and Kari.

Digimon Adventure introduces the eight main characters as kids going to both elementary and middle school, ranging from 7 to 12 years, but as time passes, they also get older. In association with the film's Japanese production company Toei Animation, North American distributor Fathom Events has announced a US theatrical run for the new Digimon anime movie, Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning.

On November 8 and 9, 2023, in 750 participating theaters across the United States, Fathom Events will be holding special screenings of Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning at 7:00 pm local time. A synopsis of the new movie has been provided by distributor Fathom Events:

It’s 2012, and ten years have passed since the adventure in the Digital World. Daisuke Motomiya is now twenty, and he and the rest of the DigiDestined seem to be changing bit by bit in terms of appearance and lifestyle. Then one day, a giant Digitama suddenly appears in the sky over Tokyo Tower. Daisuke and the others encounter a mysterious young man named Lui Ohwada, who informs them that he’s the first ever DigiDestined in the world.

The Digimon franchise is returning to its digital roots with an all-new animated feature film that will close out the storyline of the original anime of the series, Digimon Adventures by following the cast of its original sequel Digimon Adventures 02. While not commonly ranked among Digimon's best seasons of all time, 02 was a milestone for the series with a legion of fans who will no doubt be excited to see the cast return for a movie.

As reported by Crunchyroll, the Digimon creators revealed in a March 25, 2023, announcement at AnimeJapn 2023, an update on the status of the long-awaited Digimon anime film. According to the announcement the film, entitled, Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning will premiere on October 27, 2023, in Japan, with international debuts scheduled after that. Despite nearly six months of cinema closures due to Covid-19, China actually built nearly 6,000 more new screens in 2020, according to a new report from the country’s film authorities.

The data contradicts the disastrous predictions made over the summer about the extent to which the pandemic would devastate the Chinese exhibition sector.

China now boasts 75,581 screens nationwide at some 12,700 complexes, having built 5,794 more screens last year, said the National Office for Special Film Funds, a committee under the direct management of the powerful Central Propaganda Department made up of cadres from that body and the Ministry of Finance. Growth did slow, however: to compare, China built around 9,700 new screens in both 2019 and 2018. It began 2020 with around 69,800 screens at some 12,400 complexes.

China had a relatively quiet box office weekend, in which holdover Korean War-set title “Sacrifice” led for the third week in a row thanks to $14.4 million in sales, according to data from industry tracker Maoyan.

This week’s most notable new release was the blood-stained, tear-soaked, seaside-set local crime thriller “Back to the Wharf,” which came in second with a $7.09 million debut. It stars Zhang Yu and was directed by Li Xiaofeng. His first feature, the 2014 period drama “Nezha,” premiered in the New Currents section at the Busan International Film Festival that year but made just $82,130 in Chinese theaters.

Patriotic omnibus film “My People, My Homeland,” now well over a month in theaters, came in third with $4.86 million. It has now grossed a cumulative $416 million (RMB2.75 billion), making it one of the world’s biggest films of the year and the 21st highest grossing film of all time in China.

Going into Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna I was apprehensive. The previous installment in the Digimon Adventure series, the six tri. movies, crashed and burned so badly it killed any enthusiasm I had for that original Adventure continuity. Starting off with so much potential they quickly devolved into awkward fan service (of all kinds), bad pacing, and character beats that just made no sense. There was no cohesion, little fun, and next to nothing of what made Digimon so special for a generation of fans.

This movie is an apology for tri. It does everything right that tri. failed at. Last Evolution Kizuna quickly rights the ship, discarding the lame cliffhanger from the end of the final tri. film and mostly acts as though those films never happened. Tuesday Update after 9:22Am Sunday report, writethru with overall market details: Sony’s Oscar winner, Little Women, originally began offshore rollout back in late December 2019, but continued to show off its grit at the international box office this weekend. The Greta Gerwig-directed update on the classic opened in Japan at No. 1 with $495K. In total, on 440 screens in 13 offshore markets, the film’s weekend was worth $760K for a $99.5M overseas cume through Sunday.

The century mark should be in the offing with strong play continuing in Denmark, and a China release still a possibility. Gerwig’s modern take on the 19th century novel was originally scheduled to hit Middle Kingdom movie theaters on February 14, but was caught in the coronavirus crisis which shuttered all of the market’s cinemas in late January.

Exclusive: Looking at the international box office over the past few weekends, if there’s one trend that’s beginning to emerge from the smattering of cinemas back in operation, it’s that audiences are responding to new product — and fresh re-releases. Exhibitors are getting the job done with what’s available to them, but it’s still slim pickings out there. A clear success story this past session, however, was Korea where a subsidy offered by local body Kofic, which sharply discounted tickets, resulted in a huge boost in receipts, from $1.2M last frame to $3.17M this session across the Top 10 titles. Play was led by new local thriller Intruder, which accounted for the bulk of takings at $2.2M (see market snapshots below).

Elsewhere in Asia, some were up, some were down. Japan saw a nice hike thanks to the return of a trio of Avengers movies while Hong Kong and Taiwan dipped.

Exclusive: Some international box office markets that are up and running — even if not at full steam — saw increases this weekend while others faced drops given good weather in some spots and an overall lack of new product. However, Disney floated Kristen Stewart-starrer Underwater into Korea for the first time with a No. 1 start at $402K which is one of the better overseas openings for the underperformer that began rolling out globally in January. Disney/Pixar’s Onward also continued to lead Taiwan in its second week.

Local titles in Germany and Czech Republic were still atop the charts and the former continues to see strong drive-in business. Overall, however, there’s evidence that new releases — scant though they may be — are the ones drawing the most attention from moviegoers. (See market snapshots below.)

Exclusive: It’s all very quiet on the international box office front, but this past weekend saw some decent increases in various markets. Cinemas are still just sputtering back to operations around the world, notably in parts of Europe and Asia.

Germany remains the key major driving admissions — and largely from drive-ins, though Vue International’s CinemaxX circuit re-opened three multiplexes this weekend.

May is a test-the-waters month while June will see further majors welcome moviegoers amid stringent safety measures. They include Italy and Spain. Also set to start the turnstiles again in June are Poland and the Netherlands.

The UK is still looking at July 4 to re-open, however the majority of independent cinemas recently polled are thinking September is more likely for them. Earlier this year Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna was going to be released for a one night screening in the United States on March 25th. The film had already come out in Japanese theaters and American fans were excited to experience what is set to be the final adventure in the original Digimon continuity.

That sadly didn’t happen thanks to the coronavirus pandemic but now American fans will finally get a chance to see the film when it’s released to home media (Blu-ray/DVD) on July 7, 2020 thanks to Shout! Factory and Toei Animation. The coronavirus pandemic and the closure of most movie theaters has led to a temporary suspension of North American box office reporting by Comscore, the industry’s box office tracker.

The decision came after Disney announced it would stop global box office reporting, given the current large number of theater shutdowns around the globe.

“Due to this unprecedented situation, Comscore will be temporarily suspending our usual Sunday North American Top 10 Estimates, Global chart and commentary,” Comscore said in a statement. “We will update the status of studio reporting on Monday.”

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, told Variety that there will be some revenues this weekend, thanks partly to drive-in movie theaters that have remained open.

This spring, the DigiDestined return to the big screen in a final adventure with their Digimon. The new feature film Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna will screen on March 25th as a special one-night-only theatrical event across the nation. In addition to viewing the full feature, moviegoers will also get to experience an exclusive 15-minute pre-show that provides a fan experience only found in theaters. The pre-show will include interviews with the film’s director, Tomohisa Taguchi, and chief animation director, Seiji Tatsukawa. For the Digimon Adventure's 20th anniversary, Toei Animation has announced a new film project with the original characters.

The DigiDestined are needed once more in the new film, Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna.

We've got an all new trailer for the Digimon movie that gives us a better look at the plot, including the idea that the characters may have to give up their Digimon as they grow up!
