Kadokawa is the Japanese juggernaut publishing house responsible for bringing to the public beloved series such as Oshi no Ko, Re: Zero, Sword Art Online, Mushoku Tensei, Delicious in Dungeon, and many more. Before anime became such a popular media, Kadokawa built its empire on publishing light novels and other forms of literature. Many of these popular series appeared in Dragon Magazine, which launched in 1988 and has now officially ceased publication.
Some of Kadokawa's most popular series first appeared in Dragon Magazine, including Slayers, Full Metal Panic!, and Patlabor. The monthly magazine published both light novels and manga, and it was a steady feature throughout Kadokawa's long history. Going forward, it will be replaced by a new web platform titled "Mekurimekuru".

There's nothing quite like a classic 90s anime to serve as a blast from the past for fans. Many grew up on these anime, while others found these series later on their journey or long after they stopped airing. While modern anime may now wow audiences with their visuals and their plots, there are still certain anime that will always be the best of their time.
These 90s anime didn't need fancy CGI to help stun viewers. They had fantastic plots, endearing characters, and enough life to be worth watching long after they reached their end. Sometimes, when watching anime, the best series worth watching is a classic from the 90s.

One of the most iconic classics in the harem genre, High School DxD is what many consider the golden standard of action-comedy ecchi. Despite the series' controversial raunchiness and, at times, uncomfortable fan service, it gathered a sizable fanbase among ecchi lovers and continues to attract attention even 16 years after the original light novel's release.

Ryo Mizuno, the creator of Record of Lodoss War,recently revealed what led him to create the now-classic high fantasy franchise, as well as his thoughts looking back on the series nearly 40 years later.
Mizuno, who recently sat down with part of the Square Enix team that works on Final Fantasy XI, had a long history of interacting with science fiction and fantasy before he actually started to work on one. Hhe believes his love of fantasy started in elementary school as he read stories of myth and legend at the library, which eventually blossomed into a more general love of sci-fi and fantasy in high school. However, it wasn't until his time at university that he was first introduced to tabletop RPGs, which would become the basis for the classic Record of Lodoss War.

Popular light novel and manga writer Atsuko Asano is perhaps best known for her sci-fi shojo series, No. 6 -- an intensely emotional tale about two lost souls who are brought together in the wake of society's destruction. 14 years after the series' conclusion, Asano shocked long-time fans by suddenly announcing a new sequel novel.
The original No. 6 light novel series originally debuted in October 2003 and was serialized regularly until its conclusion in June 2011. That same year, Aria released a manga adaptation featuring illustrations by Hinoki Kino. As of 2025, both works have cumulatively sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide. The story has also been adapted into a popular anime series by Studio Bones. Consequently, the series' return has become a major trending topic on social media. The 1990s were a stellar decade if you were a fan of anime. Titles like Sailor Moon, Cowboy Bebop, and Slayers had all burst on the scene with unique takes on their genres. The world at large wouldn't be the same without these blockbuster hits. But it's always important to remember that this wouldn't have been possible without great villains to keep audiences engaged.
While audiences may latch onto interesting protagonists, their villains play just as big of a role in defining the success of their shows. Many of these antagonists have remained iconic over the years. Some even outshined the rest of the cast at the height of their popularity. These villains have stood the test of time, whether because of their charisma, charm, or manipulative backstabbing.

Per Japanese news site Oricon, Dragon Magazine recently confirmed that it will cease publication with its May 2025 issue, which will go on sale in Japan in March 2025. The magazine's sunset marks the conclusion of a work that helped facilitate the birth of many hit light novel-turned-anime IPs, including the classic harem rom-com High School Dxd, among numerous others. Dragon Magazine's editorial department released a brief statement explaining the decision: "Due to recent changes in the reading environment, we are increasingly realizing that the role that Dragon Magazine has played is no longer something than can be fulfilled by paper magazines, and this is our next challenge."

The Medieval Era, also called the Dark Ages, takes place between the 5th and 15th centuries. Medieval anime tends to take place in Europe, or a fantasy country or realm inspired by England, France, or Germany. It's also one of the most popular time periods to base historical fantasy anime in. The titles vary in tone from dark to whimsical.
Medieval high fantasy takes place in a world that's completely different from the real world, often in a fictional kingdom that's inspired by a real world place. Fantasy is a great addition to a medieval historical. Medieval people had many pagan practices and understandings of the world, as well as superstitions.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a staple series in the fantasy genre, pushing actress Sarah Michelle Gellar into fandom. The critically acclaimed series changed not only the fantasy genre but also how female characters were written, inspiring many successful shows that followed, and, with ongoing plans to continue the Buffyverse, Gellar gave the most positive answer so far.
A reboot has been in development since 2018, but Sarah Michelle Gellar has repeatedly shared she was not interested in reprising her role as the titular character. She did, however, support the idea that the Buffyverse should continue without her. In an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Gellar gave the most positive update to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot so far.

Akira is not only famous in the anime and manga sphere but also pop-culture in general. Critics and movie directors alike refer to Akira as one of the greatest and most influential films of the past 30 years. So it’s no wonder fans discredited Stephen Spielberg and George Lucas for turning the film down because it wouldn’t suit western audiences.
According to Manga Entertainment co-creator Andy Frain, Akira shaped modern sci-fi as people know it today. Films like Midnight Special, Looper, The Matrix, Chronicle, Inception, and even the TV show Stranger Things, all borrowed thematically and stylistically from Akira. In fact, two of those five movies even feature a child with destructive telekinetic powers as one of the main plot points.

One of the most popular sources for anime adaptations today is the website Shousetsuka ni Naru, translated as “Let’s Become a Novelist.” Anybody may publish their work there for free. Stories that win a devoted readership are scouted to become light novels and anime series. These include isekai titles like Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation , Ascendance of a Bookworm and My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! But there are also court mysteries ( The Apothecary Diaries ), romance ( My Happy Marriage ) and self-contained novels ( I Want to Eat Your Pancreas ). China and Korea have their own vibrant web fiction scenes. Stories published on sites like Qidan and KakaoPage have been adapted into comics, television series and even Japanese anime. What you may not know, though, is that there is a growing English language web fiction community. It does not yet compare in scale or prestige to its counterparts in East Asia.

Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball Z is a landmark shonen anime that's become far more than just a popular manga and anime series. Dragon Ball Z produced nearly 300 episodes and the entire franchise's total dwarfs 600 but its success has also facilitated more epic cinematic adventures. Dragon Ball movies became a common occurrence ever since the series' debut, but Dragon Ball Z alone produced 15 feature films that push the series to new heights. Some Dragon Ball Z movies are more popular than others and the 11th film, Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly, is particularly contentious in the fandom.
Bio-Broly is the third Dragon Ball Z movie to feature the fan-favorite character, following Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan and Broly - Second Coming. That being said, the concluding entry in this unofficial trilogy is largely considered to be the least effective of the bunch and the nadir of the Dragon Ball Z movies.

Toei Animation began its studio in 1954, and its logo comes from one of its earliest movies, Puss in Boots. The studio produced close to three hundred shows and around two hundred movies. Literary tales are a common theme for Toei movies, like their adaptation of Dracula, Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid and some ballet retellings, especially in the 1970s.
Hayao Miyazaki directed some of his earliest movies, like The Great Adventure of Horus: Prince of the Sun with Toei. Toei also produced many films and television series for franchises anime fans are well-acquainted with today. Toei's responsible for huge series like Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, and Slayers.

Light novels, like manga, are popular forms of literature that often get adapted into smash-hit anime series. J-Novel Club is a top English publisher of light novels, licensing popular and niche titles like My Next Life as a Villainess and Otherside Picnic. In addition to modern favorites, J-Novel Club has earned noteriety for renewing licenses on classic series like Slayers and Crest of the Stars.
In addition to manga, one of the biggest resources that studios use to adapt series into anime are light novels. Light novels are a form of popular literature that's typically categorized in the same way as YA fiction in Western publishing. Similar to manga, light novels are often serialized works of fiction published in pulp and literary magazines like Gekkan Dragon Magazine, Faust, and Charano!
Among publishers in the west that translate and publish light novels into English, one of the biggest and most highly regarded is J-Novel Club.

Disney's refusal to allow Audible to continue with season 2 of Slayers: A Buffyverse Story leaves crucial Buffy storyline questions unanswered. Slayers: A Buffyverse Story ended with intriguing cliffhangers surrounding Spike, Angel, Giles, and Willow. The cancelation of Slayers: A Buffyverse Story is disappointing as the audio series was considered the best Buffy story in years.
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer franchise, better known as the Buffyverse, spans television shows, one rather unforgettable movie, comic books, novels, video games, and an audiobook, which received a disappointing update regarding its future in February 2024, meaning many story questions will go unaddressed. Disney refuses to let Audible proceed with future seasons of Slayers: A Buffyverse Story. Christopher Golden, co-writer of Slayers, received no explanation for the cancellation of the popular Audible original series. The cancellation of Slayers raises questions about the possibility of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival or spinoff in the future.
Slayers: A Buffyverse Story season 2 receives a disappointing update from Christopher Golden. Golden co-wrote the audio series with original Buffy the Vampire Slayer cast member Amber Benson. Slayers was an Audible original series set in the Buffy universe that crafts a fictional tale through audio means.
As Golden shares on Twitter, the future of Slayers season 2 is not looking positive. According to the writer, “Disney has refused to let Audible proceed with future seasons.”
Working with this cast, the production team, and the folks at Audible UK--and seeing the joy in the fan community--has been one of the happiest experiences of my career.

One of my favorite "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" characters is Anya Jenkins (Emma Caulfield), the Vengeance Demon turned human. She's introduced as the villain of the season 3 episode "The Wish," in which Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter) wishes for a world where Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) never came to Sunnydale. When Anya makes Cordelia's wish come true, vampires end up ruling the town in the Slayer's absence.
Restoring the proper timeline robbed Anya of her powers; she's stuck as just another teenager attending Sunnydale High (and flunking math). Initially resentful of her new life, she eventually falls for Xander (Nicholas Brendon), and by season 4, she's part of the Scooby gang, sharing duties with her boyfriend as the show's comic relief.
Anya is hilarious; much of the humor in "Buffy" is sardonic, but she's oblivious. Having spent centuries as a vengeance demon, modern socialization skills escape her. Anya can be just as cutting or rude as the others,...

Dolly Parton provides an update on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, saying there is still work being done to "revamp" it. The planned 2018 reboot faced various challenges and is on an indefinite pause. Other spinoff ideas, like a prequel centered on Rupert Giles or a series focused on Faith, were pitched but never materialized.
The long-gestating Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot gets an update from Dolly Parton, who was an uncredited producer on the original show. The news of a revived take on Buffy again gained steam in 2018. That development had begun the reboot process of the game-changing supernatural teen drama, and Monica Owusu-Breen would be the showrunner. At the time, it was reported that series creator Joss Whedon would be involved as an executive producer, in addition to working on the script with Owusu-Breen. As of August 2022, however, original executive producer Gail Berman confirmed that the Buffy reboot is on pause.

After hearing an example trained on his voice, he noted it was decent but added, "I think it's creepy, or rather, it's terrifying that something that I didn't sing or talk about ends up spreading around the world as if it had actually happened." Kaji was shown examples of adoring fans who were deceived by his voice and addressed those making such false clips. "To get me to actually do a cover requires many steps and hurdles," he said. Light novels are a popular form of literature in Japan, written with simple language, fairly short page counts, and frequent illustrations. Due to their serialized nature, light novels are a popular source for anime adaptations, with excellent examples across various genres. Some of the most popular recent anime are based on light novels, such as KonoSuba, That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, and Goblin Slayeri, but also classics like Slayers and Records of Lodoss Wari.
Although manga is a better-known source of anime adaptations, the best anime based on light novels show that these literary works can provide an excellent foundation for anime adaptations as well. Although anime based on light novels tend to skew towards Sci Fi and Fantasy, excellent adaptations of other genres also exist. Fans of these anime should also check out the original light novels.

In an alternate timeline revealed in a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" audiobook, Cordelia's sister is turned into a vampire and Cordelia is forced to kill her. If Dawn had been a part of the series from the beginning, she would have likely faced the same fate as Cordelia's sister in the alternate timeline. The tragic event of Buffy having to kill her own sister would have drastically changed the trajectory of the show and had a significant impact on her character.
Though Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered in 1997, the supernatural franchise is still constantly expanding, and now, a recent audiobook has revealed an alternate timeline that reveals what would have happened if Buffy's sister Dawn had been a part of the television series from the very beginning. Helen's Dead Director K. Asher Levin Says Audiences Will Be Surprised by the Gore in His Dark Comedy
“The only thing it looks like you’re giving is up,” muses one character in Helen’s Dead, director K. Asher Levin’s offbeat new film, which sets up the comedic fodder that follows. The film about a dinner party gone wrong has plenty of spunk. Addie (Dylan Gelula of Loot) discovers that her boyfriend is sleeping with her cousin Helen and makes a bold move to confront them at a dinner party. She’s not the only one crashing the party. Helen is found dead, and everybody is a suspect.

The world of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" returned last week — but it looks a lot different than the last time fans saw it. Or, rather, it sounds different: the show's revival comes not in the form of another TV season, but an Audible exclusive audio series called "Slayers." It's a clever way to get the monster-fighting band back together, all while side-stepping issues that might arise with revisiting this world — like supposedly immortal monsters aging with their actors.
"Slayers" also gives fan favorite "Buffy" castmates a chance to reinvent their characters, as it features a wild, universe-hopping plot that sees dead characters revived, scripts from Tara actress Amber Benson and novelist Christopher Golden (original series creator Joss Whedon is not involved with the project), and, most thrilling of all: Cordelia Chase, vampire slayer. Yep, Charisma Carpenter is returning to the Buffyverse after two decades away, and she's taking on an...

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" might have left TV screens 20 years ago, but the exploits of the slayer and her compatriots didn't end in 2003. Take for instance how many of the events from the much-derided "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" movie were re-written back into Buffy lore, so to speak, in a 1999 comic book series by Dan Brereton and Christopher Golden entitled "The Origin." Co-signed by "Buffy" creator and showrunner Joss Whedon, "The Origin" basically retold the 1992 film in a way that fit Whedon's original vision and the show's tone. And that's just one of many Buffy tales that have been told outside of the show proper.
Now, Golden has teamed up with actress Amber Benson, who played Tara in "Buffy," for the new Audible original, "Slayers: A Buffyverse Story." This audio series further expands the Buffyverse by telling a story set 10 years after the events of the original series finale. "Slayers...

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" was once the most progressive show on television, so how is it possible that someone with a long history of mistreating women could create a long-standing feminist masterpiece? Series creator Joss Whedon was once at the top of the world of superhero fans and comic book nerds, many of whom fell in love with his beautiful blonde avatar, Buffy, a demon-fighting highschooler with superhuman strength and agility. The show's heroine was a uniquely powerful depiction of a ditzy Valley girl, turning the then-contemporary damsel-in-distress archetype on its head. But we've since learned that, behind the scenes, Whedon was doing everything he could to make the women of the show feel powerless.
