The big first-night audience for Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary special carried over to streaming the week after — giving the show its first-ever appearance on the Nielsen streaming charts.

SNL, which streams on Peacock, notched 863 million minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Feb. 17-23. That was good for seventh place overall and third among library series. The show has an absurdly large library — 1,109 episodes spanning half a century — but Nielsen notes that 68 percent of viewing for the week was for episodes from the current season, including the anniversary special.

Netflix’s Zero Day and Prime Video’s Reacher finished first and second overall for the week after premiering on Feb. 20. Zero Day held a slight lead with 1.84 billion minutes of viewing to 1.81 billion for Reacher. Love Is Blind (1.42 billion minutes), Bluey (1.05 billion) and Family Guy (1.01 billion) also scored more than a billion viewing mintues.

Sometimes you know what people are watching on Netflix just by being part of culture. It’s not going to shock anyone to learn that “Squid Game” and the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight were, indeed, hits.

NBCUniversal has cut a deal with Paramount Global, an agreement that will bring the long-running popular Nickelodeon show Spongebob Squarepants to the kids and family-focused theme park Universal Destinations and Experiences is building in the Lone Star State.

The Wild Robot dominated the 2025 Annie Awards honoring the best achievements in animation. The DreamWorks toon came in with 10 nominations across nine categories, and it won all of them: Best Feature, Best FX, Best Character Animation, Best Character Design, Best Direction, Best Music, Best Production Design, Best Voice Acting (Lupita Nyong’o), and Best Editorial.

The Annies win capped a momentous weekend for The Wild Robot, which also took the animated feature prizes at the Producers Guild of America Awards and Critics Choice Awards, cementing its position as the favorite going into the Academy Awards on March 2.

The film’s chief rival for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, Flow, also had a successful day, taking Best Feature — Independent and Best Writing, two races where it didn’t have to face The Wild Robot.

Also Saturday night, The Wild Robot won the Producers Guild Award for outstanding producer of animated theatrical motion pictures. And Friday night, it won best animated feature at the Critics Choice Awards.

Other features that won multiple awards from the International Animated Film Society Asifa-Hollywood, which presents the prizes recognizing the year’s best in animation, include two-time winners Flow and Orion and the Dark, with the former winning best feature — independent and best writing — feature.

Flow, which won the Golden Globe for best animated motion picture, and The Wild Robot are both nominated for the Oscar for best animated feature, along with Inside Out 2, Memoir of a Snail and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.

Netflix has quite a large slate of new and returning series coming in 2025. The slate was previewed Wednesday at the streamer’s annual Next on Netflix event in Los Angeles, which was also streamed across the globe.

Some of the most anticipated projects include Stranger Things 5 and Wednesday Season 2, neither of which have premiere dates just yet. So far, Netflix has revealed a huge slate for February, as well as a smattering of series that are expected through August, but a large portion of the series the streamer says we’ll see this year haven’t been confirmed for a specific date yet.

Of the dates that were revealed, perhaps the biggest surprise is that the third and final season of Squid Game is coming sooner than audiences might have anticipated, premiering on June 27. June will also bring another season of Ginny & Georgia.

Streamers in the United States opted for familiar television fare on streaming platforms in 2024, with original series failing to break into the top 10 most-streamed show across all popular platforms, according to a year-end report released by Nielsen.

The Australian children’s cartoon “Bluey” topped out the chat as the most-streamed show in 2024 with 55.62 billion viewing minutes on Disney Plus, Nielsen said. The show is produced and distributed by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC Australia), with Disney having exclusive domestic linear TV and streaming rights in the U.S.

“Grey’s Anatomy,” the long-running medical drama that airs on the American ABC broadcast network in the U.S., was the second most-streamed show of 2024 with 47.85 billion viewing minutes across Netflix and Disney-owned Hulu plus. “Family Guy,” the adult animated sitcom owned by Disney and aired on Fox,...

“Bluey” and “Grey’s Anatomy” were the most-streamed programs of 2024, according to a year-end Nielsen report. The Australian preschool program racked up 55.62 billion viewing minutes on Disney+, while the long-running hospital drama nabbed 47.85 billion across Hulu and Netflix.

Animated series on Hulu took the next two spots — “Family Guy” with 42.44 billion minutes viewed and “Bob’s Burgers” with 36.80 billion — followed by “NCIS” with 35.91 billion across Netflix, Hulu and Paramount+. “Young Sheldon” and “The Big Bang Theory” ranked at No. 6 and No. 7, followed by “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Criminal Minds” and “SpongeBob SquarePants.”

Streaming in general was up 10% from 2023, with 12 trillion minutes in total. That equates to about 8.4 billion dates, or 23 million years’ worth of watching.

Reality TV enthusiasts are in for a treat. Netflix is putting a strong focus on this genre with the return of Love Is Blind for its eighth season, along with the debut of Celebrity Bear Hunt, a fresh competition-based reality show. For those who prefer a gripping thriller, Netflix will drop Apple Cider Vinegar, a new series premiering on February 6 that’s worth keeping an eye on.

In other big news, the highly popular series Cobra Kai will release its final batch of five episodes this month, marking the end of the TV series. While it’s bittersweet for fans, this isn’t the last we’ll see of Daniel Larusso, as he’s set to appear in an upcoming Karate Kid movie hitting theaters later this year.

The century-old Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will return this Thursday to ring in the holiday season.

Even though the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade kicked off for the first time in 1924, this year’s parade is not the 100th anniversary of the annual tradition. It was suspended for two years, not for the Covid-19 pandemic, but for World War II in the 1940s.

This year’s parade will be filled with new floats, balloons and musical performances, including cameos from Jimmy Fallon, Charli D’amelio and Idina Menzel.

The 98th Macy’s Parade lineup is set to be the largest yet with more than 5,000 volunteers, 17 featured character balloons, 22 floats, 15 heritage and novelty balloons, more than 700 clowns, 11 marching bands, 10 performance groups and some of music’s biggest stars.

In its second week on Netflix, Prison Break rocketed to the top of Nielsen’s streaming rankings.

The former Fox series, which also streams on Hulu, was added to Netflix on July 29 and made its streaming chart debut that week. For the week of Aug. 5-11, it more than doubled the previous frame’s viewing time, rising from 758 million to 1.6 billion minutes. (Hulu, incidentally, is developing a new version of Prison Break with Mayans Mc showrunner Elgin James.)

Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy — whose final season premiered Aug. 8 — was the top original series for the week, coming in at 1.46 billion minutes of viewing. That’s a strong showing, but also down a good amount from the 2.45 billion minutes the show recorded the week of its season three premiere in June 2022.

For the week of Aug. 5, Prison Break (which now streams on both Netflix and Hulu) racked up 1.6 billion minutes viewed across its 90-episode library, besting Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy on Nielsen’s overcall ranking. Bluey (on Disney+), Grey’s Anatomy (Netflix/Hulu) and House of the Dragon (935 million minutes viewed on Max) round out that Top 5.

The debut of “Emily in Paris” Season 4 proves Netflix audiences are far from done with the chaotic comedy.

The Lily Collins-led series’ latest installment debuted to an impressive 19.9 million views following the Aug. 15 premiere of the season’s first five episodes that comprise Part 1. The remaining five episodes of Season 4 are set to premiere on Sept. 12.

For reference, “Bridgerton” Season 3, Part 1 debuted to 45.1 million views in May, with the premiere of Part 2 in June boosting the season’s views to 28 million. And while Emmy-nominated “Baby Reindeer” did not make a splash until its second week on the streamer with 13.3 million views, viewership for the limited series peaked in its third week, drawing in 22 million views.

“Emily in Paris” was Netflix’s most-watched English TV show during the week of Aug.

“Emily in Paris” returned to Netflix last week and immediately reached the top of the TV chart, debuting with 19.9 million views in its first four days of streaming.

The Darren Star-created series is always a strong performer for Netflix, and will surely remain on the Netflix Top 10 for several weeks, especially as its current position only accounts for Season 4’s first five episodes, with Part 2 set to debut on Sept. 12. The new release also gave a boost to Seasons 1 and 3, which took the bottom two spots on the TV chart with 1.8 million and 1.7 million views, respectively.

Still, “Emily in Paris” wasn’t the most-watched title across all of Netflix — that title went to “The Union” which landed at the top of the movies chart. The fourth and final season of Netflix’s high-profile comic-book series “The Umbrella Academy” had an underwhelming debut, failing to top Netflix’s Top 10 list in its first week of availability. To be clear it made the list at number 2, but it could not overcome the second week for “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.”

Both of the series tallied a rounded 8.4 million views last week, which is low — but not unheard of — for top-ranking Netflix shows. It was the number 3 English-language series that reminds us Netflix was a bit of an afterthought streamer over these past few weeks.

“Simon Biles Rising: Season 1” ranked third for both of the past two weeks on Netflix, while Simone Biles herself was busy ranking first and second over on Peacock. The docuseries has spent four weeks on the Top 10, and even with the Olympics’ gymnastics competition in the rearview, it brought in another 3.7 million views.
