Exclusive: Vice Media has launched a sports division, lining up more than 50 hours of programming and also shifting its Vice TV cable network to a sports-first approach.

As part of the strategic shift, Vice TV will co-produce and air seven original sports series early next year, with prime-time programming blocks carrying the Vice Sports brand. The company will produce more than 50 hours of sports-themed docuseries, programs, events, and podcasts for global distributors across television and digital. In what will be one of the biggest moments in professional wrestling history, January 2025 will see the WWE moving Monday Night Raw to Netflix as part of what appears to be a full migration to the world's biggest streaming service. The company's flagship show will become entirely global as of January 6th and looks set to start an entirely new era. This media partnership will be integral to WWE as they do their best to maximize their global reputation while the company keeps distancing itself from the previous owner Vince McMahon, whose recents trials have been a (small) subject of Netflix's recent WWE documentary, Mr. McMahon.
The move to Netflix is an exciting prospect for fans, as WWE has hit a creative zenith not seen in decades. Through long-term stories such as The Bloodline and Cm Punk's life-long quest to headline WrestleMania, a women's division that is boosted by...

The upcoming docu-series on Netflix about Vince McMahon promises to deliver an expos on one of the most controversial and once-powerful figures ever to be associated with the world of professional wrestling. McMahon built an empire and marketed a product to millions, and while the wrestling business would never be as mainstream as it is today without him, he did so on the backs of others and inadvertently caused death and damage to those who brought him his wealth. In 1999, when wrestling was enjoying something of a renaissance in what's now referred to as the WWE Attitude Era, a documentary entitled Beyond the Mat showcased the damage done to many of the industry's most prominent performers and showed light on many of the secrets of the industry that for many years were kept hidden from public viewing.

Fans couldn’t understand why Vince McMahon would distance himself from the Netflix documentary Mr. McMahon. The series has disappointed fans who were looking to get a peek into “the real Vince McMahon” as the promo of the series had originally promised. Long-time wrestling fans found it to be the compilation of all the known controversies against the former CEO of WWE.

Mr. McMahon began work way before the Janel Grant lawsuit against McMahon. In the wake of the allegations and McMahon’s removal from WWE, the docu-series almost took a different path as filmmaker Chris Smith now gained access to talent and footage that the former CEO would’ve never signed off on.

Wrestling fans have been through quite a bit in the past few years as scandals have rocked World Wrestling Entertainment. Longtime chairman and CEO Vince McMahon stepped down in July 2022 to likely avoid being fired for his role in sexual assault and harassment claims, including concerns around paying out hush money and creating a massive cover-up for his alleged ill deeds. This is by no means the first time McMahon or the WWE have come under fire — hell, there's an entire excellent documentary series called "Dark Side of the Ring" about all of the awful things that have happened in wrestling over the years — but it was definitely the nail in the coffin for his complicated and controversial career.
A documentary about McMahon was in the works at Netflix but reportedly dropped despite being deep in post-production when the allegations were released. Now, a new documentary series, "Mr. McMahon," is...

WWE achieved the height of its popularity in the late ’90s and early 2000s during what became known as the Attitude Era. This period within the sports entertainment powerhouse continued to deviate from the “sports” based aspect of pro wrestling which was made famous from the days of the territories and more into the “entertainment” part. However, what catapulted the company to mainstream popularity was the believability of many of their biggest players, namely “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, the two biggest stars in the history of pro wrestling. People understood the business was a work (meaning “fake” in wrestling terms), but they had stars they could believe in who were involved in conflict they could buy because the stars themselves lived their wrestling personas 24/7. While the rest of the 2000s saw some relative success for the WWE, the company ratings, viewership numbers, and ticket sales have plummeted ever since.

Vice Television is going through a shuffle at the top, with head exec Morgan Hertzan set to exit next week and Pete Gaffney replacing him on an interim basis.
The move was just announced internally by Vice Media Group CEO Bruce Dixon in a memo to employees.
Hertzan plans to segue to another, unspecified opportunity after his last day at Vice on April 12. His move follows waves of staff departures and dramatic changes at Vice. The onetime media industry darling filed for bankruptcy last year and was acquired for $350 million (a fraction of its valuation a decade ago) by a consortium led by Fortress Investment Group. A+E Networks remains a stakeholder in Vice TV. On pay-tv, the network launched as Viceland in 2016 after taking over A+E’s H2 in a rebrand before later adopting the name Vice TV.

The Stone Cold Stunner. The People's Elbow. Sweet Chin Music. The Figure Four. 619. There are some moves in the world of professional wrestling that are so well-known they can be identified by non-wrestling fans outside of the squared circle. And now, one of the most compelling submission moves in wrestling history — the Iron Claw — is the title of Sean Durkin's heartbreaking drama about the Von Erich family. During an Iron Claw, the wrestler places all five fingers over the face of their opponent and squeezes as hard as they can into the temples. It's one of the most evocative moves in a wrestler's arsenal because there's no way to "fake" it. The audience can see a bare hand over an agonized face, giving the impression that if the wrestler didn't stop ... they could crush a skull like an empty soda can.
And no one could do it like Fritz Von Erich.

As a dyed-in-the-wool wrestling fan, Sean Durkin's "The Iron Claw" was one of my most anticipated films of 2023. Based on the real-life story of the Von Erich wrestling dynasty (real last name Adkisson), the film features Zac Efron as Kevin Von Erich, Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich, Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich (my personal favorite of the Von Erich brothers), Stanley Simons as Mike Von Erich, Holt McCallany as Fritz Von Erich, and Maura Tierney as Doris Adkisson. For wrestling fans, the Von Erich story is the stuff of infamy, a dark moment in the industry's history that weighs heavy on the hearts of multiple generations. Pulling off "The Iron Claw" would be no easy feat for those involved, but the result is one of the best films of 2023.

Plot: The true story of the inseparable Von Erich brothers, part of a professional wrestling dynasty in the early 1980s, as they endure tragedy and triumph under the shadow of their domineering father and coach.
Review: The Iron Claw is a film that a lot of people in the movie and professional wrestling communities have been looking forward to. Especially after the episode of Dark Side of the Ring on the Von Erich “curse”, fascination with the subject has soared like a Kevin Von Erich flying crossbody. For me, too, having loved professional wrestling since I was a child, and having seen a lot of the Von Erich tragedy play out, I wondered how in the world Sean Durkin could turn this into a story that audiences could enjoy.
I’m not sure he accomplished that last bit. Don’t get me wrong; The Iron Claw is an incredible film; a harrowing,...

The Von Erich family is one of the most celebrated, storied and tragic dynasties in professional wrestling history. Now, their remarkable – and short – run is ready to move from the legend of the ring to the prestige of the big screen, as the trailer for The Iron Claw has debuted.
In the trailer for The Iron Claw — which just jumped even higher than it was on my list of most anticipated movies of the year — we see the drive, struggles and “curse” of the Von Erich family as they face opponents in and demons out of the ring.

There are few sports stories as bizarre and tragic as tale of the Von Erich family, a family of professional wrestlers whose luck was so singularly awful that it popularized something called the “Von Erich Curse.” Was the curse real? You might find out if you watch “The Iron Claw,” the upcoming sports drama from A24 and filmmaker Sean Durkin, named after the wrestling move the family popularized. And you can watch the trailer above.
An extremely chiseled Zac Efron stars as Kevin, Jeremy Allen White (equally buff) as Kerry, Harris Dickinson as David and Holt McCallany as their domineering father Fritz. (Part of Fritz’s schtick early in his wrestling career was dressing as an evil Nazi character.) Maura Tierney and Lily James also star.

For months now, we've been seeing paparazzi photos of Zac Efron looking extremely beefy with a silly haircut, and hearing reports about "The Bear" star Jeremy Allen White's "gross" diet in preparation for the new A24 film, "The Iron Claw." For outsiders looking in, "The Iron Claw" looks like a wrestling drama, and many are thrilled to see the pair of actors step into the squared circle of muscle ballet. However, the average Joe's opinion of wrestling is rooted in the heyday of Hulkamania, the Attitude Era of the late '90s, or through crossover stars who have since become actors. Here's the thing: It's really cool that Allen and Efron are going to be in a wrestling movie, but if you're anticipating something like the extremely fun "Fighting With My Family" starring Florence Pugh or the deeply moving biopic "Cassandro" starring Gael García Bernal ... you're in for a hell of a rude awakening.
