Extraction kicked off a successful action franchise thanks to Chris Hemsworth and Joe and Anthony Russo. Hemsworth brought some surprising soulfulness, not to mention a killer's edge, to mercenary Tyler Rake, while the Russos brought the same mix of character-driven story and high-octane action that fueled their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It might be hard to imagine anyone else other than Hemsworth playing Rake, but he wasn't the first choice for the lead. Dwayne Johnsonwas originally slated to play Rake, back when Extraction had a different title and different release plans, but a massive shift in his career — and the Russos' — led to Extraction's current form.

Two weeks ago, it was announced that Netflix's Extraction franchise would be expanding with an eight-episode spinoff series with French actor Omar Sy in the lead role. Now, the TV show has been given its official title, which is perfect for the action series that was birthed in 2020 by MCU vets Anthony and Joe Russo, which in turn was based on the graphic novel Ciudad written by Ande Parks.
Per The Direct, the new series will be called Mercenary, which is an aptly named title when you consider the first two movies were centered around Chris Hemsworth's character of Tyler Rake, a former Australian Sasr operator turned black ops mercenary. Word of the new title came from the Chief Content Officer of the Russo Brothers' production company, Angela Russo-Otstot, who told the outlet:

Extraction is Netflix's flagship action franchise, starring Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a mercenary who is sent into the most dangerous locations in the world to extract valuable targets and hostages. Directed by former Captain America stunt-double, Sam Hargrave, fans adore the franchise's no-holds-barred action and Hemsworth's physical dedication to the role. So it comes as bittersweet news that Netflix has ordered a new TV spin-off of Extraction without Hemsworth in the leading role.

Hemsworth isn't done with the franchise, and will return for the upcoming third film in the franchise, but the new series will be headlined by another Netflix star. The streaming service has officially expanded the scope of this universe by giving the greenlight to a new TV show set in the same universe as the Hemsworth-fronted Tyler Rake films. The catch? While everyone may have tuned into Extraction because of Chris Hemsworth, Golshifteh Farahani's Nik Khan is the best part of the franchise, which is why she would lead it. Based on the graphic novel, Ciudad by Ande Parks, and directed by the Russo brothers, Extraction became the most-watched original movie in Netflix history when it was released in 2020. The film follows Hemsworth's Tyler Rake, an Australian soldier turned mercenary who is tasked with rescuing the kidnapped son of an Indian drug lord.
The original film's success prompted a sequel, with Extraction 2 releasing in 2023. It was seen as an improvement on its predecessor, earning a respectable 80% on Rotten Tomatoes (compared to Extraction's 67%). Critics praised the sequel's fight scenes and explosions, but above all else, its performances — and it's no coincidence that Farahani had a bigger role. There's a good chance you've watched something Joe and Anthony Russo directed over the years. Maybe you're a fan of their work on sitcoms like Community (including two of its best paintball episodes) or Arrested Development. Maybe you saw Extraction or Everything Everywhere All At Once, and the hit series, From, all of which the Russos produced. But the Russos are probably best known for their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; they directed four films, closing out the first Captain America trilogy with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, then directing the staggeringly successful Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The Russos are also set to return to the MCU with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, bringing back Robert Downey Jr., this time as Doctor Doom.

Have you heard of "the butterfly effect?" No, not the 2004 Ashton Kutcher vehicle, but the principle associated with figures as various as meteorologist Edward Norton Lorenz and sci-fi author Ray Bradbury, all about how the slightest change in conditions can result in widespread changes over a period of time. History is full of such examples, where instead of obvious life changing events there exist small moments (or a series of moments) that change the futures of multiple people. As with most things regarding history, these cruxes can only be identified in hindsight, and sometimes they turn out to be surprisingly unlikely.
For example: who would've ever thought that the 2020 Netflix action film "Extraction" would have been such a turning point for the careers of the Russo brothers, Dwayne Johnson, and its star, Chris Hemsworth? For starters, "Extraction" itself was originally going to be a very different film: when first put together,...

The following contains spoilers for Transformers One, now playing in theaters.
As with any Transformers movie, Josh Cooley's Transformers One has a sprawling cast. It makes sense as these stories have various robotic factions, such as the Autobots and the Decepticons, tussling with each other. This also means Transformers One doesn't have any human characters, as this journey takes place wholly on Cybertron.
Still, there are many characters as the origin story for Orion Pax and his road to becoming Optimus Prime is laid out. With that in mind, here are the main figures involved in Cooley's movie about the early days of Cybertron's civil war. It also depicts how the planet becomes split due to a harrowing caste system.

Two of Hollywood's biggest stars got their big break in Star Trek movies. The Star Trek franchise has a long history of making strong casting choices, from Star Trek: The Original Series through today. For many actors, Star Trek was their first notable role before they went on to have incredible Hollywood careers. Patrick Stewart, for example, was referred to as "an unknown British actor" when he was cast as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, but the Star Trek: The Next Generation actor has since become a legend of film and television.
The Star Trek movies, too, have helped jumpstart the careers of a few Hollywood stars. Chris Pine and Zoe Saldaa already had notable roles before Star Trek (2009), but the J.J. Abrams film helped launch both actors into another level of superstardom. Star Trek: Nemesis did not perform particularly well at the box office and received mixed reviews, but that didn't...

When Keanu Reeves’ John Wick was released back in 2014, it changed the action genre for good. The shaky-cam, fast-cuts style popularized by the Jason Bourne franchise and the MCU was done away with for more elaborate gun-fu-inspired combat sequences. The films have influenced many others like Nobody, Extraction, and Atomic Blonde.
However, the John Wick franchise may have a new competitor in town as the recent Will Smith-starrer Bad Boys: Ride or Die gave fans a surprisingly adrenaline-pumping action sequence. While Smith himself is not involved in the scene, Dennis McDonald’s Reggie steals the show as he takes on fifteen men who attack his home.

Exclusive: Nick Hamm’s action-packed adaptation William Tell, starring Claes Bang and Golshifteh Farahani, has sold to the UK & Ireland and Germany-speaking territories ahead of its world premiere in Toronto next week.
Munich-based sales company Beta Cinema unveiled the all-rights deals to Altitude (UK & Ireland) and SquareOne Entertainment for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, following the film’s well-attended press and industry screening in Toronto on Thursday.
Both distributors are targeting a release date in Q1 2025.
Beta Cinema has already announced deals with Sf Studios, Beta Fiction (Spain), Eagle Pictures (Italy), Dutch Filmworks (Benelux), Pris Audiovisuais (Portugal), Monolith Films (Poland), Cinemart (Czech Republic), Blitz (Former Yugoslavia), Ads (Hungary and Romania), Beta Film (Bulgaria), Tfg (Greece), Ukraine (Top Film) and The Plot Pictures (Middle East & Turkey) earlier this year.
Director Hamm’s adaptation of Friedrich Schiller’s classic play is fresh out of post-production.
Bang stars as titular hero opposite Farahani as his wife. They are joined by Connor Swindells, Jonah Hauer-King, Ellie Bamber, Rafe Spall and Emily Beecham, with Academy-Award winner Ben Kingsley and Academy-Award nominee Jonathan Pryce.
Altitude co-ceo Will Clarke said of the acquisition: “It’s fantastic to be working with such an incredible team of film-makers and our friends at Beta and we can’t wait to bring the epic and thrilling William Tell to audiences in the UK & Ireland.”
For his part, Thomas Sierk, Director of Acquisitions & Sales at SquareOne Entertainment, said: “The production truly succeeds to tell the story of the legendary freedom-fighter William Tell as an exciting, action-packed epic with an outstanding international cast.
Al Munteanu, CEO of SquareOne Entertainment added, “Together with my team, I am thrilled to bring this fantastic production to theaters early next year.”
The narrative unfolds in the 14th Century, when Europe’s nations fiercely vie for supremacy within the Holy Roman Empire. The ambitious Austrians, desiring more land, encroach upon Switzerland, a serene and pastoral nation.
Amidst this backdrop, William Tell, a formerly peaceful hunter, finds himself forced to take action as his family and homeland come under dire threat from the oppressive Austrian King and his ruthless warlords. Leading his fellow countrymen, Tell embarks on a courageous rebellion, seeking to defend their liberty and stand against the tyrannical forces that seek to subjugate them.
Hamm’s previous credits include Driven, which was selected as the closing film at the Venice Film Festival, Netflix’s White Lines and The Journey which premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals.
Piers Tempest and Marie-Christine Jaeger-Firmenich (Gigi & Nate) produce. Executive Producers include Jon Hamm, David Nichols and Francesco Marras.
William Tell is a Free Turn Films / Tempo production in association with Beta Cinema, WME Independent, Prime Focus Studios and Groenlandia and Cineroma Srl. The film will world premiere in Toronto as a Gala Presentation next week and will then make its European presentation at the Zurich Film Festival in October. Beta Cinema handles international rights, alongside WME Independent who represent domestic rights.

Back in 2021, actor/comedian Bob Odenkirk – who is best known for playing the role of con artist turned lawyer Saul Goodman on the TV series on Breaking Bad and its spin-off Better Call Saul – made the unexpected move of playing a retired government assassin in the action thriller Nobody. Doing the unexpected worked out, as Nobody was a success, making $57.5 million at the box office on a budget of $16 million. That was enough to get a sequel greenlit – and now that production has started on that sequel, we figured this was a good time to put together a list of Everything We Know About Nobody 2!
Script
Scripted by John Wick writer Derek Kolstad, Nobody saw Odenkirk playing Hutch Mansell, an office worker and family man who proves to be a capable fighter when facing off with a group of drunk criminals on a bus. He’s a bit too capable,...

Upcoming Tom Hardy Movie Can Be The Follow-Up To These 2 Action Movies That I've Wanted For A Decade
Gareth Evans directs Tom Hardy in the upcoming action movie Havoc, a city-wide conspiracy thriller. Havoc marks Evans' return to the action genre after a decade, following The Raid franchise. Despite being finished since 2021, Havoc's release remains uncertain, with no confirmed date from Netflix.
The director of The Raid films, Gareth Evans, is working on a new action movie called Havoc and it could be the perfect replacement for The Raid 3. The action-packed plot of Havoc kicks off when a drug deal goes horribly awry. Tom Hardy will play a detective who has to uncover a city-wide conspiracy while he fights his way through the criminal underworld to save a politicians estranged son. Evans is directing from a script he wrote and hes also producing the film alongside Hardy, Ed Talfan, and Aram Tertzakian.

The Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover could be Hemsworth's next big franchise. Hemsworth needs a successful franchise to grow beyond his Thor character in the MCU.
In more ways than one, Chris Hemsworth's new MCU replacement franchise seems more exciting than his return as Thor. Chris Hemsworth has become a part of several renowned movie franchises in recent years. While he is best known for portraying Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actor is also the leading man in Netflix's Extraction films. Before he took the role of Tyler Rake in Extraction, he was also seen in Men in Black: International in 2019 and was also a part of Star Trek's roster as George Kirk in 2009.
Recently, Chris Hemsworth also portrayed Dementus in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, allowing him to shine as a villain in the George Miller franchise. However, despite playing diverse characters in myriad movie franchises,...

Modern action films like John Wick revamped the action genre by emphasizing realistic gun use and choreography. The earliest change in Hollywood's mindset when it came to guncraft was director/producer Michael Mann, an early advocate for actors training with weapons for film authenticity. The rise of firearm trainers in Hollywood today established a new standard for actors in action films, performers are now obligated to display a high level of competence.
The action genre was in a bleak place before John Wick premiered in 2014. With the intense yet grounded gun-and-fist choreography, a decade of shaky cam cinema was finally discarded, and none too soon. However, this movie has gone down in cinema history for another feature, its attention to how firearms operate in reality and their many, many limitations. John Wick wasn't the first, though. Despite the over-saturation of action films for over a century, it took years for...

Exclusive: After successfully launching the Extraction film franchise at Netflix, director Sam Hargrave has his eyes set on another potential franchise with a piece of IP that is revving its engines to get out the gate. Sources tell Deadline that Skydance and Mattel Films have closed a deal with Hargrave to direct a live-action movie based on Matchbox, Mattel’s iconic real-world die-cast toy vehicle line. David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper are penning the script.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will produce alongside Robbie Brenner for Mattel Films. The project will be shepherded by Aimee Rivera for Skydance and Elizabeth Bassin and Andrew Scannell for Mattel Films.
The iconic Matchbox brand was invented in 1953 by automotive enthusiast Jack Odell to solve a challenge for his daughter, who was allowed to take a toy to school only if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox.
