Watchable, If Underdone

You can't fault the honesty or good heart of this movie. Also, better for a first-time director to achieve a modest success than some kind of train-wreck.

Neither did I mind, the unsurprising progression, of the sassy teenage protagonist's small-town blues with her parents and friends.

While the ending is apt and hopeful, I just had the feeling that a little more script work could have delivered a more arresting and challenging movie.

A central theme of the film is the transition from girlhood to womanhood, especially as experienced in a small, conservative town. Lucía Alemany portrays the physical and emotional shifts of adolescence in a candid and non-idealized manner. She noted that she wanted the lead character Lis to reflect a recognizable teenage reality, including the discomfort that arises when a young girl's body is prematurely sexualized by society: "One of the requirements I had for Lis was that she have big boobs, because there's something in that - in the sense that 'two days ago I was a child, and now I have something that is sexually very attractive'."
