Barbie Movie Cast and Character Guide
Image
Margot Robbie leads the critically acclaimed Barbiemovie, and it features plenty of notable faces in the supporting cast as well. For the most part, the characters are directly inspired by toys that have been released over the years or are original Barbie movie characters. Of course, this means that the long-beloved Mattel toys Barbie and Ken are not just two people.

Instead, the Truman Show-esque Barbieland is populated with plenty of Barbies and Kens. Still, each character has its place in the story, and they all help make this version of Barbieland vibrant and memorable. Most of these characters are portrayed by familiar faces for fans to look for.

Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on March 7, 2025: Following the smash success of the first live-action Barbie movie in 2023, all eyes are on Greta Gerwig as she works toward making a sequel. While news on this front is still scarce, fans know...

The Idea Of You Review: Anne Hathaway Shines In This Unconventional Romance [SXSW 2024]
Image
Rom-coms are a staple of cinema and have been for decades. Right alongside action movies and horror flicks, these tales of romance infused with humor are often there to help anchor any given year at the movies. Yet, they are often viewed as nothing more than popcorn movies; the cinematic equivalent of empty calories. Director Michael Showalter's "The Idea of You" is here to remind us that these movies can be so much more than that. At their best, they can be illuminating experiences that shed meaningful light on the human condition. Thanks in no small part to a stellar performance by Anne Hathaway and a star-making turn for Nicholas Galitzine, this is the genre at its best.

The film centers on Solène (Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mom who has to chaperone her teenage daughter's trip to the Coachella after her ex-husband bails at the last minute. There, she...

Anne Hathaway Falls In Love With A Pop Star In The Idea Of You Trailer
Image
Spring is right around the corner (thank god for that), which means romance will be in the air! What better way to celebrate than by watching the trailer for a movie where Anne Hathaway plays a hot mom who falls in love with a younger pop star? In "The Idea of You," Hathaway is a woman who takes her teen daughter to Coachella. I know, I know — that sounds like a fate worse than death. But don't worry — there's love to be had! Because while at the extremely hip music festival, Hathaway's character strikes up a romance with a 20-something guy who happens to be the lead singer of a pop boyband.

It sounds a little bit like fanfiction, but the new film is actually based on the novel of the same name by Robinne Lee, who based the pop singer character in part on Harry Styles. The new trailer...

The Best Romantic Comedies of the Past 5 Years, Ranked
Image
In the late nineties and early 2000s, romantic comedies were incredibly popular, with many A-List stars having romantic comedies as part of their filmographies. In the early to mid-2010s, however, the rom-com started to see a noticeable dip in quantity and quality, particularly when it came to theatrical releases.

With the theatrical release of Crazy Rich Asians in 2018, the romantic comedy has slowly started to make a comeback. Studios have begun pushing out more rom-coms, both theatrically and through streaming. With the box office success of Anyone But You, it is evident that the rom-com is here to stay. The last five years have seen a significant rise in romantic comedies, with fresh and compelling narratives, and, of course, on-screen chemistry at the forefront.

Star Wars: 10 Actors You Forgot Were in the TV Shows
Image
Star Wars is one of the most iconic movie and TV franchises and has experienced continual growth over the past decades. Initially created by George Lucas, the new Star Wars content upholds his legacy through the genius storytelling and cinematic experiences that producers such as Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau offer on-screen. As the release of Star Wars TV shows becomes more and more frequent, it makes it harder to fully appreciate every single detail that these series have to offer.

Actors playing the more prominent roles in the Star Wars TV shows, such as Pedro Pascal and Ewan Gordon McGregor, often take away from the less-relevant characters. There are, therefore, a multitude of brilliant actors who are forgotten in the Star Wars TV shows. From Neil Patrick Harris to Liam Neeson, Star Wars has a lot of talent to offer.

10 Movies That Came Out During The Pandemic That Should Be Re-Released In 2024
Image
Many movies that were originally planned for theatrical release during the pandemic ended up as direct-to-streaming releases and should be re-released in theaters in 2024. Films like "The Lovebirds," "Palm Springs," and "Enola Holmes" found success on streaming platforms but would benefit from a theatrical re-release to reach their full potential. "Greyhound" and "The Trial of the Chicago 7" had the potential for box office success but were released directly on streaming platforms due to the pandemic. A re-release in theaters in 2024 would give these films the attention they deserve.

Plenty of movies that were supposed to come out in theaters during the pandemic ended up as direct-to-streaming releases and so many of them deserve to be re-released in 2024, so audiences can experience them the way the filmmakers intended. From big-budget blockbusters to smaller indie movies, the list of films that did not make it to theaters as planned is huge and,...

Barbie may be everything, and Ken is just Ken, but what about the people in the Real World they meet along the way? Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, based on the popular dolls, is a hyper-stylized take on the Mattel toys that sees the titular doll journey from Barbie Land to the Real World on a quest of self-discovery.

Margot Robbie is Barbie

In addition to producing the movie, Margot Robbie plays a Barbie doll who has an existential crisis and is forced to go on a journey from Barbie Land to the Real World to find answers. She’s everything, but is that enough? Robbie is most...

From her experiences of working at a non-profit organization to her pursuit of finding meaningful relationships, the show walks through it all in its five-season runtime. While Insecure's primary appeal comes from its relatable depiction of a 29-year-old woman's struggles who navigates the last of her 20s, its storyline is held together by the powerful performances of its cast members.

Considering how Insecure's cast plays a crucial role in making it a compelling comedy-drama, it is not surprising that Issa Dee has won several accolades for playing Issa Rae in the series. Not only has she received two Golden Globe Award nominations for her performance in Insecure but...

Adele Lim at an event for Raya et le Dernier Dragon (2021)
Everyone’s a Comedian: Why Hollywood Is Struggling to Bring Comedies Back to Theaters
Adele Lim at an event for Raya et le Dernier Dragon (2021)
“Who are we going to trick into making our bats–t movie?”

That’s the question Adele Lim said she faced as she and her partners puzzled over how to get their travel comedy “Joy Ride” made. The answer, the “Crazy Rich Asians” writer said at the movie’s SXSW premiere, where her film got a warm reception, turned out to be Lionsgate. “Joy Ride” — which follows a young Asian woman who travels to China with her friends on a business trip — became a highlight at Lionsgate’s CinemaCon presentation in April.

After years of seeming to fear the funny, Hollywood studios like Lionsgate are making a concerted effort to bring live-action comedies back to theaters. The problem is that comedy now pervades theatrical genres. Superhero movies, romantic stories and horror movies all seem to require a wink and a nudge these days. With so many ways to get a chuckle,...

Could ‘Jury Duty’ Get a Season 2? It Has ‘Infinitely Repeatable’ Concept for Future, Executive Producers Say
Image
After a decade-long friendship, comedy producers David Bernad and Todd Schulman finally put together their hidden-camera comedy expertise to make Amazon Freevee’s viral success “Jury Duty.”

The executive producers of the overnight hit mockumentary combined their talents for the improvised-scripted sitcom. Bernad and Schulman began with the idea to hone in on sitcom genre tropes and create a story about an isolated individual amongst a cast of actors as they served on a sequestered jury.

The two have had successful stints with unconventional comedy subgenres, most recently within the improvised-scripted sphere. Schulman worked with Sacha Baron Cohen on “Who Is America?” and Bernad teamed with Eric Andre on “Bad Trip.” Prior to “Jury Duty,” Schulman served as executive producer on “Borat,” “Bruno,” “The Lovebirds” and “The Dictator,” while Bernad executive produced “The White Lotus,” “Superstore,” “Uncharted” and “White House Plumbers.“

Since “Jury Duty’s” ending, audiences have embraced star...

How A WGA Strike Could Shake Up Theatrical Release Schedule As Studios & Exhibs Celebrate Box Office Boom – CinemaCon
Image
In a week when distributors and exhibitors reconvene for their annual Las Vegas meet-up CinemaCon and celebrate the post-pandemic resurge of the box office, the motion picture industry is also bracing for a potential Writers Guild of America strike.

With production and deal-making slowing down — especially with 98% of WGA West and WGA East members authorizing a strike if a fair new film/TV deal isn’t met by the May 1 deadline — how could that possibly dent the box office boom, one Gower Analytics projects will result in an estimated $32 billion globally, up 24% from last year, and $9 billion stateside, up 200%?

Just as a majority of exhibitors are getting back on their feet financially after Covid’s great shutdown of 2020-21, studio sources outlined a worst-case scenario to Deadline should the WGA strike span more than four months.

In short, the theatrical release calendar would see several date changes for pics, as soon as Q4 this year.

Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Apparently, it was discussed, but Tom Cruise appearing as a variant of Iron Man in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was never a real possibility.

“Few Marvel movies have had as many rumors surrounding them as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. At some point, in some corner of the internet, basically, any Marvel character you can imagine was rumored to be appearing. Netflix Has a New Movie Category Inspired by an "SNL" Sketch
Image
We can thank "Saturday Night Live" for Netflix's latest bout of creativity. The streamer caught the newest episode of the show - hosted by Jerrod Carmichael - this past weekend, and took notes on a sketch that inspired the platform to add a new category for its subscribers.

"SNL"'s music video-themed sketch - which featured cast members Pete Davidson and Chris Redd, as well as actor Simon Rex and guest performer Gunna - proposed a campaign to only make "short ass movie[s]." To which Netflix quoted-tweeted a video of the sketch on April 4 and wrote "good idea" alongside a link to their newest page also titled, "Short-Ass Movies."

What Is Netflix's "Short-Ass Movies" Category?

Per Netflix's website, the "Short-Ass Movies" category includes a lengthy list of films that roughly have an air time of 90 minutes. The page is also organized by genres such as comedies, rom-coms, thrillers, action,...

‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’ Review: As Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, Andrew Garfield and Jessica Chastain Put a Human Face on the Infamous Saga of Televangelism
Image
In “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” Andrew Garfield and Jessica Chastain play Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, the self-styled Christian TV personalities who did more than anyone else to mold televangelism into a game-changing, culture-shaking, credit-card-maxing industry/cult/diversion. The movie, which is a ticklishly fascinating rise-and-fall saga, was directed by Michael Showalter, who almost always makes comedies, so you might expect him to treat the Bakker saga as a delicious slice of kitsch — which, in a sense, it was.

There’s a bit of that, but Showalter is up to something more sly, and maybe more artful. In “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” he gives Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker the full dignity — and scandal — of their humanity. He knows that a lot of people think of the Bakkers as walking caricatures, and that in the case of Tammy Faye, with her infamous troweled-on ’60s-raccoon-from-Maybelline clown-freak makeup, she verged on self-parody.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘Jackass’ Release Dates Shifted from This Fall to Next Year
Image
Paramount has shaken up its theatrical release schedule. Two anticipated sequels slated for release this fall, “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Jackass Forever,” will instead be released next year, while “Mission: Impossible 7” has been moved from May to November of 2022.

Deadline reported that the move came after Paramount decided the current pandemic conditions would not be ideal for the launch of the tentpoles. It’s the latest sign that the Covid release-date shuffle that has plagued movies for the last year-and-a-half is far from over.

“Top Gun: Maverick,” the first sequel for the 1986 Tom Cruise actioner, was slated for release in June 2020, but that’s been changed several times. Most recently it was set for a pre-Thanksgiving release on November 19.

It is now dated for Memorial Day weekend next May, the most recent slot for another Tom Cruise action film, the seventh installment of “Mission: Impossible.” Now that movie will...
