The story is based on a fairy tale "Prinsessan Lindagull" (Finnish: Prinsessa Kultakutri) by a Swedish-speaking Finnish author Sakari Topelius (as Z. Topelius), first published in Swedish in the book "Sagor: Andra samlingen" (A.W. Gröndahl, 1848) and in Finnish in the book "Lukemisia lapsille: Viides osa" (Werner Söderström, 1893). English translations of the tale include "The Princess Lindagull" and "The Princess Lindengold".

The Finnish companion book "Prinsessa Kultakutri" for the short film was also released (Weilin+Göös, 1986). It's told in Finnish by authors Irja Lappalainen and Antonia Ringbom, with illustrations by Ringbom.

Alternate versions
Finnish language version is also narrated by Asko Sarkola. It premiered on Finnish television at Yle TV1 channel as part of the children's Christmas Eve special (Finnish: Aattoaamun joulupaketti lapsille) in December 24, 1987. A two-hour television special includes several programs and is hosted by Kari Rydman.
