The story is based on a book of essays titled Survival of the Thickest by Michelle Buteau. Buteau serves as a co-creator, executive producer, writer, and actor on the show. In casting the show, Buteau pushed for the inclusivity that she never saw as a child (via NPR). This meant casting queer, black, and fat actors. When talking to Decider,...

‘She Came from the Woods’ Exclusive Posters: 1980s Slasher Throwback Comes to Tubi This Weekend
Image
Director Erik Bloomquist (Ten Minutes to Midnight, Long Lost) is back with slasher throwback She Came from the Woods, which is headed home this weekend.

After being released in theaters earlier this year, She Came from the Woods is now slashing its way onto Tubi on Saturday, June 10. Check out a gallery of exclusive character posters below, along with the previously released trailer for the 1980s-style summer camp slasher.

In She Came from the Woods, “A group of counselors unleashes a decades-old evil, long buried secrets, and bloody mayhem on the last night of summer camp in 1987.”

Matt Donato wrote in his review for Bloody Disgusting, “Even as a warmup act to the heavy hitters worshiped by slasher fans since the dawn of internet forums, She Came from the Woods stands its ground as an example of how no subgenre is dead with the proper approach.”

Everything We Know About Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ Movie So Far
Image
Initially announced in 2014, the upcoming “Barbie” movie has quickly become one of the most anticipated releases of 2023.

Audiences have praised and criticized each “Barbie” update, but this April, Warner Bros.’ released the official first-look image of Margot Robbie as Barbie, and anticipation has been growing ever since — especially after Warner Bros.’ stoked the flames with our first look at Ryan Gosling as Ken.

In addition to co-writing the latest “Barbie” draft, Oscar-nominated “Little Women” and “Lady Bird” filmmaker Greta Gerwig is directing the project. In addition to starring as the titular character, Robbie is also a producer alongside “Dallas Buyers Club” producer Robbie Brenner (Mattel Films) and “Harry Potter” producer David Heyman (Heyday Films), as well as her husband, Tom Ackerley (LuckyChap Entertainment).

Below, we run down everything we know about the “Barbie” movie so far — from the release date to the cast to the project’s lengthy production history.

Greta Gerwig at an event for 33rd Film Independent Spirit Awards (2018)
As if anticipation for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie couldn’t be higher, soundtrack details for the film were announced on Thursday and this thing is stacked. In addition to the previously announced Dua Lipa, the soundtrack will also feature songs by Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, Haim, Ava Max, Charlie Xcx, Dominic Fike, Fifty Fifty, Gayle, Ice Spice, Kali, Karol G, Khalid, Pink Pantheress, Tame Impala and The Kid Laroi.

And even more artists will be announced at a later date. Dua Lipa’s first single from the album will be released on Friday.

Grammy-winning producer Mark Ronson, whose work ranges from Lady Gaga to Bruno Mars to Duran Duran, serves as executive music producer for the album.

And for those a bit befuddled as to Gosling’s inclusion on the soundtrack, a gentle reminder that he has a band called Dead Man’s Bones that released its first album in 2009 and,...

Greta Gerwig at an event for 33rd Film Independent Spirit Awards (2018)
Greta Gerwig Says ‘Barbie’ Channels the Surrealism of Classic Technicolor Musicals With ‘Authentic Artificiality’
Greta Gerwig at an event for 33rd Film Independent Spirit Awards (2018)
The first trailer for Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” showcased a candy-coated pink world that perfectly mimicked the aesthetic everyone associates with America’s favorite doll. Now, in a new interview for Vogue, the cast and director of the upcoming “Barbie” discussed how that look came together.

When the film starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling entered production the cast and crew regularly assembled every Sunday morning to watch a movie that would be referenced, in some way, in the film for what was dubbed “movie church,” according to the interview.

According to Vogue, Gerwig foresaw “Barbie” being akin to an Old Hollywood movie musical. Specifically cited is the 1948 feature “The Red Shoes,” directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger and Jacques Demy’s 1964 musical “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.” Interestingly, Demy’s film is also cited as an influence on Damien Chazelle’s musical “La La Land.”

“They have such a...

Greta Gerwig at an event for 33rd Film Independent Spirit Awards (2018)
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling Enter the Real World in ‘Barbie’ CinemaCon Sizzle
Greta Gerwig at an event for 33rd Film Independent Spirit Awards (2018)
Audiences got to see more of the wacky, pink and fashion-forward world Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” at CinemaCon. The footage reveal was preceded by Gerwig walking on stage alongside Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and American Ferrera.

“Everyone knows Barbie,” declared Robbie, “but she’s never been on the [big] screen.” Gerwig noted that she had never met Gosling prior to making the film. Gosling joked that he previously only knew Ken from {the outside} but now he knew Ken from within. While he initially doubted his Ken-ergy,” Gerwig and Robbie brought it out “like pink scarlet fever.”

Ferrara noted that by the end of the film, she was a Barbie Girl.

“You’ve never seen so many grown men find an excuse to come to the set,” remarked Robbie. “It was like a dopamine hit.” Replied Gosling, “I think I finally know what Dorothy felt like.”

Noting the film’s comic elements,...

New ‘Barbie’ Trailer Opens Up Greta Gerwig’s Candy-Coated World (Video)
Image
A new “Barbie” trailer is here. Warner Bros. has unveiled the official trailer for the highly anticipated upcoming film, which stars Margot Robbie as the titular character — plus many, many others. You can watch the trailer above.

The film looks like a pink-swathed world of magic with a fair amount of humor dropped in, including a hilarious exchange about engaging in a “beach off.” The world is immersive, and an amazing shade of hot pink. Still not much is known about the plot of the film but suffice it to say Barbie and Ken end up on a roadtrip to the real world – with rollerblades in tow – and there are a fair amount of musical sequences.

Oscar-nominated “Lady Bird” and “Little Women” filmmaker Greta Gerwig co-wrote the script for the film alongside Noah Baumbach and directs, with Ryan Gosling filling the role of Ken. Or, at least one of the Kens.

‘Moon Man’ Holds Off ‘Warriors of Future’ on Another Strong China Box Office Weekend
Image
Chinese sci-fi comedy “Moon Man” held station at the top of the mainland China box office, albeit at a lower orbit. After ten days in cinemas its cumulative total is a fraction of a degree short of 300 million, and it operated at a higher elevation than new launch sci-fi actioner “Warriors of Future.”

The strong figures came despite some cinemas remaining closed in key cities and capacity limitations remaining in place in others. Hainan Island went into lockdown over the weekend as a cluster of Covid cases emerged. Consultancy, Artisan Gateway calculates that the weekend haul of 91.8 million propels the nationwide year to date box office total at 3.3 billion. Its deficit compared 2021 was reduced to 30.

There were no Hollywood titles in the latest weekend top five, giving Chinese films all the kudos. This time of year is traditionally considered an unofficial blackout period or ‘Chinese film support month,’ when major...

Sabrina Carpenter Kicks Off 2021 With Her New Song "Skin"
Image
Sabrina Carpenter is starting the year by blessing her fans with a new single, and damn, we're hooked. The Work It actress teased the release of her latest single "Skin" several hours before it dropped at midnight on Jan. 22, with nothing but the time of the drop in her caption. We love an artist who knows how to keep us on our toes with anticipation!

The song has a sultry tone we've heard from Carpenter before, especially in her last EPs Singular: Act 1 and Singular: Act II. But rather than longing for love like she did in "Almost Love" or relishing the attention of her admirers in "Looking at Me," the songstress croons about someone getting under her skin. "You can try / To get under my under my under my skin / While he's on mine," she sings in the emotional tune.

The singer has been telling fans that she has...

Image
For the first time in a while, Netflix is adding no new titles today, so let’s instead take the opportunity to recap what’s gone up on the streaming site over the past week, from Saturday, August 1st to Saturday, August 8th. As that encompasses the first day of the month, there was a huge amount of fresh content added to Netflix’s library over this period. To be exact, there were 49 movies and 24 TV shows.

On the film side of things, this haul includes many an acclaimed or cult favorite flick from across the decades in all kinds of genres. The highlight is probably the entire Jurassic Park trilogy, which has proved popular with Netflix users as the first two entries have been hanging around the top 10 most-watched movies list almost ever since arriving. 80s classic fantasy flick The NeverEnding Story and its sequel were added on the 1st as well,...

Yesterday was a big day for Netflix. To kick off August, the streaming giant dropped a large batch of new content, made up of classic films, underrated gems and a few titles that are already proving to be pretty popular with subscribers. Indeed, August got off to a nice start and it seems the rest of the month will be just as exciting.

Looking ahead, this week will be bringing over 20 new movies and TV shows to the platform, some of which are definitely worth a watch. But before that, today sees the arrival of 3 new titles on Netflix, comprising 2 films and 1 new TV series. Admittedly, nothing in today’s drop is particularly exciting, but we can’t exactly complain after what we got yesterday.

Up first is romantic comedy Almost Love. Billed as “an ensemble comedy about romance in the smartphone era,” it seems to have earned mediocre reviews...

If ever a blog post would be diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (previously known as multiple personality disorder), this might be the one.

For the last two blog posts, I have been fighting to remind us why public exhibition of independent film is important in an increasingly online world. Heck, I’ve been saying this to whoever would listen for the last couple of years. Trying to remind us that seeing films together is how we most effectively share our stories and social messages, and experience a sense of community.

And then, poof!

Why ‘Almost Love’ Director Mike Doyle Insisted Openly Gay Actors Play the Lead Couple
Augustus Prew, Michelle Buteau, and Scott Evans in L'Amour ou presqque (2019)
“Almost Love” marks the directorial debut of actor Mike Doyle. The indie, which the openly gay Doyle also wrote, stars Scott Evans as a painter and Augustus Prew as his boyfriend who runs a famous fashion Instagram account. As their relationship comes to a crossroads, we also meet their circle of friends, including Kate Walsh, whose character’s husband of 15 years leaves her for a younger woman. Cammy (Michelle Buteau) is surprised to find out that the man (Colin Donnell) she’s been seeing is homeless while Zoe Chao plays a tutor who’s falling for her almost 18-year-old student.

Variety caught up with Doyle and Evans earlier this week to talk about directing, insisting on having openly gay actors play the lead couple and why Evans may be jumping out of helicopters in an “Almost Love” sequel.

Mike, you’re known for your acting. But here, you wrote and directed the movie.

‘Almost Love’: Film Review
Augustus Prew, Michelle Buteau, and Scott Evans in L'Amour ou presqque (2019)
The seven-year-itch arrives a couple of years early for Adam and Marklin in independent romantic comedy “Almost Love.” Could that be because they’re gay men? Adam tries to tamp down that thought shortly after he and Marklin celebrate their fifth anniversary. Maybe it’s because they aren’t yet hitched, even though gay marriage has been an option for more than a decade. Why aren’t they? Marklin asks himself. It’s not that either is stepping out. There’s just a malaise. And then there’s the fact that they — and their coterie of gal pals — are at that age when reassessing love, coupledom and career is common. Whatever is ailing these New York City friends, it isn’t compelling enough to help writer-director Mike Doyle’s solid debut outshine the other Lgbtq-inflected offerings it will compete with when it arrives digitally and on demand April 3.

‘Almost Love’ Review: Melancholy Queer Relationship Comedy Asks, ‘Is That All There Is?’
Augustus Prew, Michelle Buteau, and Scott Evans in L'Amour ou presqque (2019)
A comedy in a minor-key about what millennials look like once they hit their mid-30s, “Almost Love” presents a tapestry of characters who are all living lives that aren’t fully theirs. Marklin is a menswear social-media influencer who documents every minute of his life. His longterm boyfriend Adam (Scott Evans) is a “ghost painter,” meaning he creates watercolors that are then peddled by another woman (Patricia Clarkson) and under her name. Their friend Haley (Zoe Chao) is a tutor for an underachieving teenager who’s in love with her, and her friend Cammy (Michelle Buteau) is unlucky in love, and dating an itinerant homeless man (Colin Donnell) because she has low self-esteem.

There are other characters in the fray in this melancholy, polished, New York-set relationship study that works best when it focuses on one or two people, and . If some of these characters — including Elizabeth, an unhappily...

Augustus Prew, Michelle Buteau, and Scott Evans in L'Amour ou presqque (2019)
‘Almost Love’ Film Review: Gay Couple Works Out Issues in Overpopulated, Underwritten Comedy
Augustus Prew, Michelle Buteau, and Scott Evans in L'Amour ou presqque (2019)
“Almost Love” (which screened at festivals under the title “Sell By”) is the first narrative feature written and directed by actor Mike Doyle, best known for playing forensics tech Ryan O’Halloran on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” from 2002 to 2009. This is an ensemble movie, and Doyle makes the common mistake of first-time writer-directors of cramming far too many characters into his story.

“Almost Love” is one of those ultra-mild movies that is reliant almost entirely on the likability of its large cast, which includes Scott Evans and Augustus Prew (who recently co-starred in the Hulu horror movie “Midnight Kiss”) as the central couple, Adam and Marklin. Adam is a visual artist who pays the bills by working on canvasses for art star Ravella Brewer, who is played in an all-too-brief cameo by Patricia Clarkson.

Marklin operates some kind of fashion site that is so well known and influential that...

Official Trailer for Ensemble Relationships Comedy Film 'Almost Love'
Augustus Prew, Michelle Buteau, and Scott Evans in L'Amour ou presqque (2019)
"It's all so confusing...!" Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for an indie ensemble comedy titled Almost Love, a film about romance in the smartphone era. Also known as Sell By, which is the title the film is using for the UK release. This originally premiered at the Toronto Inside Out Film Festival, and also played at numerous Lgbtq festivals including Outfest, Out on Film Festival, and a few others. Adam and Marklin's 5-year relationship has gone from a passionate flame to a simmer, forcing them to reconcile with each other's shortcomings while their friends endlessly search for/deal with love in New York City. The film marks the directorial debut of actor Mike Doyle, and stars Scott Evans, Augustus Prew, Michelle Buteau, Colin Donnell, Zoe Chao, Christopher Gray, John Doman, Patricia Clarkson, and Kate Walsh. This looks a bit cheesy and cliche, no surprise, mixed with some modern charm and humor.
