When Gary Hustwit took his latest documentary “Eno” to Sundance in January 2024, he wasn’t riddled with anxiety about whether or not the doc about musician Brian Eno would find distribution.
The odds were undeniably against him: Scoring a big studio deal as an independent filmmaker is, these days, like winning the lottery. And Hustwit’s decision to forgo a conventional chronological doc about Eno’s career in favor of creating generative software that creates a different version of the movie every time you see it, made it a particularly hard sell.
But despite factors, Hustwit and “Eno” producer Jessica Edwards fielded offers from several distributors in Park City.
Still, the filmmaker wasn’t convinced they were ready to distribute it the way he intended. “I don’t think many of the distributors were ready to take on something like ‘Eno,'” he says. “I am also still innovating the...

Using a custom-made generative AI software, Gary Hustwit’s Eno combines archival footage with new interviews to create a film that is never the same twice, with millions of potential configurations.
The documentary depicts the life and work of British musician and record producer Brian Eno, who has worked with acts including David Bowie, U2, Coldplay and Grace Jones.
Hustwit previously collaborated with Eno on Rams, the 2018 documentary about German designer Dieter Rams, for which Eno wrote the music. Conversations on that set hatched the idea of a pioneering documentary format for Eno’s own story.

Michael Douglas Set As Guest Of Honor Of 50th Deauville Film Festival
Michael Douglas will be guest of honor at the 50th Deauville American Film Festival. It will be the actor’s fifth trip to the fall festival unfolding in the swanky northern French beach resort. The organisers suggested Douglas has a special connection with the festival as the place where he met now wife Catherine Zeta Jones. “Everyone says that the Deauville Festival is special, but few people say like me that it changed their lives,” the announcement release quoted him as saying. The actor was last at the festival in 2013 with My Life with Liberace. His late father Kirk Douglas was also an honorary guest at Deauville and was feted with a posthumous retrospective in 2020. The life and accomplishments of Brian Eno are prodigious enough to fill several films, but until hearing the pitch for “Eno,” the composer, producer, self-professed “non-musician” and visual artist associated with groups including Roxy Music and U2 was resistant to be the focus of even one. “I usually can’t stand docu-bios of artists because they are so hagiographic,” Eno says.
Rather than charting a chronological path through Eno’s career, documentarian Gary Hustwit proposed using generative artificial intelligence to create a film that would literally be different for every audience that screened it. “The use of randomness to pattern the layout of the film seemed likely to override any hagiographic impulses,” Eno says.
Hustwit and Eno had collaborated before; Eno scored the filmmaker’s 2018 documentary “Rams,” about German industrial designer Dieter Rams. By the time he turned his attention to “Eno,” however, Hustwit had grown restless with the traditional...

The Portable Door is a fantasy-adventure comedy film from Australia that is available to stream in America. Following a beleaguered intern who begins working at a magical London firm, the movie adapts the first installment in the seven-part J.W. Wells and Co. book series by English novelist Tom Holt. The novels are themselves inspired by The Sorcerer, an 1887 comic opera from Gilbert and Sullivan in which a young magician attempts to join the ranks of the prestigious London sorcery firm.
The Portable Door received a 91% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes with reviews calling it a worthy addition to the YA fantasy genre, favorably likening it to the Harry Potter franchise. Given that it follows a 23-year-old protagonist, the movie does not technically qualify as YA, but the comparison is understandable. It's another adaptation of an English book series depicting a whimsical world of magic and wizardry. When discussing the comparison,...

Gary Hustwit has started production on “Eno,” a career-spanning documentary about musician and artist Brian Eno.
The non-fiction film boasts access to hundreds of hours of never-before-seen footage, unreleased music from Eno’s archive, and visual art. It’s the first authorized documentary about the music legend.
The producers say that “Eno” will be released in multiple versions and will employ “groundbreaking generative technology” in its creation and exhibition. Though the specifics haven’t been revealed, insiders say that the finished film can take on myriad different forms depending on the platform or manner in which it is being viewed. It is similar to the way that Eno uses technology to compose music.
“He is the perfect subject to use this sort of approach,” says Hustwit. “He’s turned down many previous projects because he didn’t want to do a conventional bio-doc.”

Who knows why a sight as pitiful as 14-year-old Balli (Áskell Einar Pálmason), the unwashed, neglected child of an abusive stepfather and a largely absent mother, inspires a protective instinct in some kids, and a vicious one in others? Who knows why, at times, a protector can himself become a bully? Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson’s beautiful and cruel second feature boasts an outstanding juvenile ensemble cast. But almost more than it stars any of them, it stars the ebbs and swells of an inescapable legacy of heteronormative male violence, that fills childhoods with dark, shameful corners that no pale, bright splashes of Icelandic sun can ever warm. In the end, boys will beat boys.
Balli is fleeing another day of peer humiliation and adult inattention at school when three of his schoolmates catch up with him and administer a thrashing so bad it makes the local news and forces him...

If Ted Lasso were a film executive, he’d probably resemble someone like Marc Goldberg, the CEO of U.K. producer-distributor Signature Entertainment.
Goldberg’s favorite football team since he was a kid has been West Ham United, and — in a cosmic alignment befitting the popular Apple TV Plus series — the club’s owner, David Sullivan, happens to be a stakeholder in Signature.
In Goldberg’s early career as a DVD salesman, he managed to convince a corporate client that buying an executive box at West Ham would come in handy when entertaining customers. In 2010, when Sullivan bought the team, the new owner asked for feedback from corporate members on ways to improve the club, which super-fan Goldberg readily provided in an off-the-cuff email.

Variety has been given exclusive access to the trailer (below) for Danish horror film “Speak No Evil,” which has its world premiere at Sundance. Sales are being handled by TrustNordisk.
The film follows a Danish family on vacation in Tuscany, where they befriend a Dutch family. Months later the Danish couple receive an invitation to visit the Dutch and decide to go for the weekend. However, it doesn’t take long before the joy of reunion is replaced by misunderstandings. Things gradually get out of hand, as the Dutch turn out to be something different than what they have pretended to be.
The film was directed by Christian Tafdrup, and written by Christian Tafdrup and Mads Tafdrup.
Christian Tafdrup describes “Speak No Evil” as a satirical horror movie. “Satirical, because it revolves around ordinary people’s absurdly recognizable ways of behaving. A horror movie, because the film is dark, evil and willingly foul.

In a crowded theatrical landscape, how do local films with smaller budgets find a path to audience when competing against studio tentpoles and blockbusters?
A key way to get cut-through is via carefully crafted publicity and marketing campaigns, which speak to not only what the film is but who it is for.
Despite their importance in creating interest in a project, the quality and quantity of the materials that make up a campaign are often at the mercy of the available budget, time and producer priorities.
The perception that a movie is ‘sold’ to audiences only after it is wrapped and completed means unit publicists tasked with devising a publicity plan do not always have access to the areas they need in order to capture effective assets during production.

A tribute to the Nordic film industry’s resilience, four Nordic titles have made it through to Cannes’ Official Selection. And unlike previous years, when Denmark or Sweden (Rüben Östlund) drew most of the worldwide attention, audiences should watch out for new and established voices from Norway, Finland and Iceland.
“Compartment No. 6”
Juho Kuosmanen’s sophomore feature marks Finland’s return to competition after a decade away (the previous Finnish film in competition was Aki Kaurismäki’s “Le Havre”). The Finnish director won Un Certain Regard back in 2016 with his black-and- white debut, “The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki.” The story of a young Finnish student and a misanthropic Russian miner who share a journey along the Soviet Union’s trans-Siberian railway in the late 1980s, “Compartment No. 6” stars Seidi Haarla, one of the Berlinale’s 10 Shooting Stars.

Hulu’s list of new releases for June 2021 is highlighted by a host of useful library titles and one fascinating original film.
The original film in question is the one that lends its delightful photo of Pierce Brosnan delivering a baby to this post. False Positive stars and was written by Ilana Glazer (Broad City). It sounds like a really fun, creepy time with a synopsis that reads: “After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” Cool!
Hulu’s other original offerings aren’t too inspiring this month. Only Love, Victor season 2 on June 11 moves the needle much.

After earning much acclaim with his Un Certain Regard Cannes winner Rams (which was recently remade with a Sam Neill-led project), director Grímur Hákonarson returned with The County, which follows an Icelandic woman who rises up against her local co-op and the old ways of life in her small village. Following a premiere back at TIFF in 2019, it’ll finally arrive in U.S. theaters and Virtual Cinemas this month, beginning on April 30, and a new trailer has landed from newly-launched distributor Dekanalog.
Jared Mobarak said in his TIFF review, “The County shows that it only takes one person to beat the drum for change to occur. But it also posits just how sinister the opposition can be when its livelihood of means is threatened in the process. Sam Neill has shed some new light on Jurassic World 3, aka Jurassic World: Dominion. The upcoming sequel will see Neill return to the role of Alan Grant for the first time since Jurassic Park III in 2001. As the actor tells it, this is going to be a big movie in just about every way a movie can be big.
The 73-year-old actor is currently promoting his new movie Rams. During a recent interview, the subject of Dominion came up. Sam Neill compared director Colin Trevorrow to Steven Spielberg, who directed the original 1993 blockbuster classic, while also revealing just how massive the movie is going to be. Here's what he had to say about it.
"It's going be a big film. [Director] Colin Trevorrow has that childlike sense of wonder, playfulness and inventiveness that [Steven] Spielberg has. We really shot a six-hour movie. We were all very gung-ho... Hopefully, there'll be thousands...

You can take the boy off the farm, but you can’t keep the farm — especially the dino ones — away from Sam Neill.
From the sheep of his new movie “Rams” to the bunnies of upcoming “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway,” the Emmy-nominated New Zealand actor is entering his milestone 50th year of professional acting with projects incorporating his love for animals. However, it’s the not-so-farm-friendly dinosaurs of “Jurassic World: Dominion” that mark one of the largest-scale and most memorable projects of the 73-year-old Kiwi’s career.
Neill reprises his role as paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in the new film — partly filmed during the pandemic and due out in 2022 — and jokes that the cast excitably churned out what could become a six-hour movie.

February is shaping up to be something special. In response to a pandemic-extended awards season, the sort of films that used to crowd the release calendar just before New Year’s in an effort to Oscar-qualify while also still maintaining some measure of last-minute/latest-thing freshness are now arranging to come out over the coming weeks.
Think of that as a teaser of such upcoming films as “Minari” and “Nomadland” more than a reflection of this week’s lineup, although a couple of this week’s releases feature elements the marketing departments would be happy to hear described as “Oscar worthy.”
The first is Viggo Mortensen’s directorial debut, in which he plays a gay man dealing with his father’s dementia (featuring a raging performance by Lance Henriksen). The second is Sam Levinson’s resourceful two-hander “Malcolm & Marie,” made during the pandemic and featuring two terrific, on-fire performances...

Nearly six years ago, “Rams,” a touching humanist drama from Iceland directed and written by Grímur Hákonarson, won hearts — and prizes — at the Cannes Film Festival. Now, in trots “Rams,” an Australian remake, directed by Jeremy Sims (“Last Cab to Darwin”). Adapted with winning cultural specificity by former newsman Jules Duncan, it’s longer and more broadly comic than the Icelandic version and boasts a tacked on, feel-good ending. Beloved Antipodean stars Sam Neill and Michael Caton play the two estranged brothers who must pull together to save what is dearest to them: their sheep.
Although they have not spoken to one another for 40 years, Colin (Neill) and older brother Les (Caton) Grimurson live on neighboring stud farms in a valley near Mount Barker, Western Australia. The spectacularly scenic landscape with its nearby mountains and beaches as well as baking hot summers and bush fires becomes a fateful character in the action.

Jurassic Park III didn't quite reach the same levels of success as its predecessors, but star Sam Neill feels that the sequel is rather underrated. After sitting out the second installment, we last saw Neill in the role of Dr. Alan Grant in 1999 when Jurassic Park III was released. Over two decades later, he'll reprise the role once against for the upcoming sequel Jurassic World: Dominion.
Though Jurassic Park III seems to be the least-popular installment of the entire movie franchise, Sam Neill looks back at the sequel much more fondly than many others. Though Jurassic Park III seems to be the least-popular installment of the entire movie franchise, Sam Neill looks back at the sequel much more fondly than many others. In fact, Neill even loves the controversial scene where a velociraptor talks to Dr. Grant in a dream, and his only real qualm with the movie is that the ending feels a bit rushed. With the release of her new film Rams, the actor remembers her love of westerns and John Wayne, playing male parts at her all girls’ school and the thrill of frightening humour
I grew up in Southport, Lancashire, with a cinema about 50 yards from my house. So Saturday mornings were spent with The ABC Minors: the Saturday cinema club with the theme song set to the tune of Blaze Away by Abe Holzmann, a red ball bouncing over the lyrics so you could sing along.

In 2016, Icelandic online newspaper Kjarninn voted Rams, released only the year before, as the second greatest film their country had ever produced. I doubt the same will be happening in Australia for this remake.
Writer Jules Duncan and Director Jeremy Sims faithfully transplant Grímur Hákonarson’s film to Western Australia, making appropriate contextual changes but otherwise preserving both the plot and the serio-comic tone of the story of brothers Colin (Sam Neill) and Les (Michael Caton), neighbouring sheep farmers who have barely spoken in years. When a disease is identified in one flock, authorities determine that all the sheep in the valley where Colin and Les live, including those of their friends and neighbours, must be destroyed. Colin, after killing his own flock before it could be done for him, hides a few of them away, hoping to preserve the rare breed he farms.

We just might be seeing Sam Neill return as "Odin" in the upcoming MCU sequel Thor: Love and Thunder. In 2017's Thor: Ragnarok, Neill was featured in a special appearance as an Asgardian actor playing Odin in a play based on the events of The Dark World. The scene also featured Chris Hemsworth's brother Luke playing the Thor actor with Matt Damon as the guy playing Loki.
Currently, Thor: Love and Thunder is filming in Australia, and it appears that we'll be seeing at least one of these actors returning. It's been reported that Damon is on the set to work on the upcoming sequel, but it wasn't clear if he'd be playing the same role or a new character. While there's still no word about Luke Hemsworth, Sam Neill teased that he could also be joining Damon for an appearance in Thor 4.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week, […]

"That's it, mate. They're taking the whole bloody valley..." Samuel Goldwyn Films has unveiled an official US trailer for the US release of Rams, the English-language remake of the award-winning Icelandic film of the same name from 2015. This Australian remake stars Sam Neill and Michael Caton as sheep farmers, and as brothers who don't like each other and haven't talked to each other in 40 years. When a livestock disease hits their farms, the local townspeople bond together trying to figure out the right way to survive. Also starring Miranda Richardson, Asher Keddie, & Hayley McElhinney. The original from Iceland is worth a watch, and I'm not usually a fan of English-language remakes. But I'll be darned if this doesn't look great! Not too cheesy, not too sentimental, a nice balance of humor and sheep and brotherly love/hate. Here's the full US trailer (+ new poster) for Jeremy Sims' Rams, direct from...

The heartwarming drama will hit theaters & VOD on February 5th.
In remote Western Australia, two estranged brothers, Colin (Sam Neill) and Les (Michael Caton), are at war. Raising separate flocks of sheep descended from their family’s prized bloodline, the two men work side by side yet are worlds apart. When Les’s prize ram is diagnosed with a rare and lethal illness, authorities order a purge of every sheep in the valley.
While Colin attempts to stealthily outwit the powers that be, Les opts for angry defiance. But can the warring brothers set aside their differences and have a chance to reunite their family, save their herd, and bring their community back together?

For the first time since cinemas reopened, two titles have earned more than $1 million in a single weekend, with The Witches bowing and The War With Grandpa continuing to climb.
It’s a positive sign for exhibitors in the lead up to the school holidays and the end of year, with titles The Croods: A New Age, Wonder Woman 1984 and The Dry all on the horizon.
Robert Zemeckis’ Roald Dahl adaptation, starring Anne Hathaway and Octavia Spencer, ranked no. 1, opening on $1.13 million from 396 screens (or $1.6 million with previews) for Warner Bros.
While some exhibitors are dismayed by the film’s M-rating, arguing it limits how accessible it is for families, it is still the best opening weekend for any film since Christopher Nolan’s Tenet on August 27.
It’s also equivalent with The Addams Family, a WB title released this time last year, in a pre-covid world.

Short film Judas Collar was among the star performers at the Wa Screen Culture Awards yesterday, taking out five categories at the inaugural event.
Held as a conclusion to the Revelation Perth International Film Festival, the awards recognise new, established, and emerging screen practices across 18 divisions.
Alison James’ story of a tracking device known as a Judas Collar that captures the journey and betrayal of a feral camel in Australia’s Outback added to its inclusion on the long list for the Academy Award for short film last year, winning each of its nominated fields, including Innovation in Short Film or Animation.
James told If innovation was at the heart of her film, which contains no dialogue and involved helicopter stunt work in the remote outback.
“There’s no road map for how to make a film like this,” she said.
