‘Cicadas’ Review: Nina Hoss’ Second Go-Round With ‘The Audition’ Director Doesn’t Live Up to the Buzz
Image
In “Cicadas,” top German actress Nina Hoss (who also serves as executive producer) reunites with filmmaker Ina Weisse, the director of her 2019 drama “The Audition,” in which she played a tightly wound woman whose life is unraveling. That same logline could also describe Weisse’s latest, where Hoss embodies 48-year-old Isabell, a high-end Berlin realtor who is trying to care for her aging parents at the same time that her childless marriage to a French engineer is falling apart. Meanwhile, she’s drawn to Anja (Saskia Rosendahl), a struggling single mother from the Brandenburg countryside where Isabell’s architect father built a striking modernist home. Playing out in several non-complementary registers and burdened with a lot of barely sketched-out backstory, “Cicadas” is more confounding than compelling.

The underlying theme of the movie is family relationships, with the duty that parents owe to their children and grown children to their parents,...

“Tape,” a Hong Kong remake of Richard Linklater’s iconic 2001 psychological thriller film of the same title, is heading for the American Film Market and theatrical release in its adopted territory. In anticipation of those steps, the producers are unreeling a “Tape” trailer.

“Tape” explores the fallout from a traumatic event at a high school graduation party, forcing the three former friends to confront their past in a story that delves into themes of power, manipulation, and the subjective nature of truth. Netflix Might Not Be That Bad After What Sandra Bullock Had to ‘Compromise’ for Bird Box: ‘We’ll give you whatever you need’
Image
Sandra Bullock’s Bird Box made a place for itself in the entertainment industry’s history in the blink of an eye. While the movie itself had mixed reviews from both fans and critics, it became the most-watched film on Netflix just within 28 days of its release. Clearly, there was something fascinating about murderous entities who could kill you just by making eye contact.

Bird Box (2018) | Credits: Netflix

Bird Box was released on the streaming giant on December 18, 2018, but it was initially meant for the big screen. Unfortunately, owing to issues with the budgeting, producer Scott Stuber decided to take the script to Netflix’s office where they were more than happy to oblige. No matter what your opinion may be on the rise of streaming platforms, you have to agree that they are extremely important to the industry’s growth.

Martin Scorsese’s Worst Regret from His Early Movies Was Making One Despicable Thing Look “Glamorous and attractive”

“We agreed on a swap”: One $182M Robert De Niro Movie Was So Violent Steven Spielberg Refused to Direct it, Swapped it With Martin Scorsese for Schindler’s List
Image
Steven Spielberg is no stranger to intense films, but there’s one project he found so brutal that he passed it off like a hot potato. Picture this: Spielberg was initially set to direct Schindler’s List but found himself tangled in a different script—a $182M Robert De Niro movie so violent, it made him think twice. Instead of diving into the blood-soaked world of Cape Fear, he swapped with his buddy Martin Scorsese, who took on the De Niro thriller with gusto.

Why Fans Forgot About Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio's First Movie
Image
Despite a star-studded cast, This Boy's Life only earned $4 million at the box office upon release in 1993. The family drama film failed to stand out among others in the genre, leading to its relative obscurity today. The movie served as an early launching pad for several rising stars, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and more.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro are among the most iconic actors working today. While both have appeared in their share of critically acclaimed titles, they've also collaborated a handful of times, most notably with Martin Scorsese. Killers of the Flower Moon is the most recent, while DiCaprio and De Niro also appeared in Scorsese's 2015 short film The Audition. But there was another time the two legends shared the screen over 30 years ago.

“This article baited them traffic, but at what cost?”: Even Guillermo del Toro Lost His Cool After Reading ‘Offensive’ Criticism for Martin Scorsese in Long Twitter Rant
Image
If there is anything that history has taught us, it is that talent is often stalked by doubt. It is as though the world desperately seeks a layer of falsity when someone is really good at something. They want the satisfaction of being able to say, ‘I knew it was a ruse!’ Unfortunately, Martin Scorsese is no stranger to such questions.

Robert De Niro and Ray Liotta in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas | Warner Bros Pictures

Even though he has been regarded as one of the greatest talents of all time, many overly analyze his poor decisions of the past as proof that what is raw talent, is just a clever con. However, one of the most infamous instances of such questioning crossed several lines.

So much so, that beloved director, Guillermo del Toro, felt the need to speak out in support of Scorsese.

Martin Scorsese finally directs Timothée Chalamet…in a Chanel ad
Image
It was only a matter of time before Martin Scorsese and Timothée Chalamet worked together. But unfortunately, it’s not for a big screen project; instead, it’s for a Chanel ad. This might not be the project we were all hoping for but it’s still a compelling commercial and hopefully the start of a genuine working relationship.

The Scorsese and Chalamet Chanel ad briefly opens with an almost Who’s That Knocking at My Door? rawness, with Chalamet waking too late for an appointment and being rushed into a waiting car, where he’ll be taken to a late night talk show appearance. Complete with a nearly constantly moving camera and a charismatic turn from Chalamet, it’s actually a pretty snazzy ad for a product most of us will never buy.

As described by Chanel, the commercial offers “an invitation to discover the many facets of a...

“Movie after movie, he keeps fascinating me”: Not Martin Scorsese, Denis Villeneuve Just Showered Mad Respect on Another Oscar-winning Director

Denis Villeneuve has flown through the ranks of Hollywood very quickly. Although he has been making massively successful and critically acclaimed projects for years, his name has only recently entered the mainstream media after he started working on the Dune series. Since then, his filmmaking has been appreciated for the gift that it is, and respect has been put in his name.

Martin Scorsese has time and again proven why he ranks amongst the best filmmakers of today and his work will certainly be talked about for centuries to come. From Goodfellas (1990) to Shutter Island (2010), Martin Scorsese has a ton of gems in his portfolio but a sixteen-minute-long short film will remain to be the most unique work of his career.

Before he was directing uniquely cinematic ads for the 2024 Super Bowl, Martin Scorsese proved back in 2015 that his artistic prowess extends into the realm of sneaky sales pitches. Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese Probably Have No Regrets For Missing Out on a Movie on Alexander The Great After Watching Its Box Office Collection

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese have collaborated on a number of projects together as actor and director. Beginning their partnership with Gangs of New York, the duo went on to work on films such as The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and the recent Killers of the Flower Moon. The duo are also rumored to collaborate again on a Frank Sinatra biopic.

While the two have worked together on many projects, they have also developed projects that have never seen the light of day. One of those was apparently a biographical drama on Alexander, The Great. The two never got to make it, but the duo may have no regrets about it as Colin Farrell’s version of the film ended up almost costing the actor his career.

Martin and Francesca Scorsese starring in Super Bowl ad

Martin Scorsese isn’t exactly known for his love of sports, once saying, “Anything with a ball, no good.” But he is now embracing the Super Bowl — well, a commercial, anyway. That’s right, Martin and his daughter Francesca Scorsese have their own Super Bowl commercial, leaning in to the TikTok videos that showed a (hip?) new side of Scorsese.

In the teaser for their upcoming Super Bowl ad for website maker Squarespace (which you can watch at the bottom of this article), Martin Scorsese is approached by Francesca while the maestro tries to develop a short film. One of the characters, he says, is a website…only Scorsese doesn’t know anything about them (or their character motivation). As for what his website will be about?: “A plea for intergalactic connection.” After quite a monologue about extraterrestrials, Scorsese tries to wrap his head around phrases like “domain” and...

Robert De Niro’s 10 performances in Martin Scorsese movies ranked from shortest to longest

De Niro worked with Scorsese three times in the 1970s, twice in the ‘80s, and three times in the ‘90s before the duo took a two-decade collaboration hiatus. After De Niro starred as himself in Scorsese’s 2015 short film, “The Audition,...

Interestingly but not surprisingly, the acclaimed director Martin Scorsese has used a very special combination to shoot the masterpiece ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’. The movie was shot by his cinematic partner, Rodrigo Prieto Stambaugh, ASC, AMC, on the Arricam (St & Lt), combined with the Sony Venice and Scorsese’s own 1917 Bell & Howell.

Its plot centers on a series of Oklahoma murders in the Osage Nation during the 1920s, committed after oil was discovered on tribal land. Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese’s Collaborations, from ‘Gangs of New York’ to ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’
Image
After nearly a decade, one of cinema’s most iconic filmmaking duos is back together again. “Killers of the Flower Moon” sees Martin Scorsese return to cinemas for his first film since 2019’s “The Irishman,” along with the two actors whose screen presence has helped define his filmography. The first is Robert De Niro, his longtime muse since his breakout film “Mean Streets” in 1973. The second is the much younger Leonardo DiCaprio, who reunites with the older statesman 10 years after “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

Scorsese is no stranger to building up a production posse of frequent collaborators. And there are many actors who made frequent appearances in his work, including Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel. But De Niro and DiCaprio are his two clear muses, serving as the leads in 15 of his 26 narrative feature films between the two of them. Technically speaking, the three first worked together in 2015 on te short film”The Audition,...

DiCaprio’s endless improvs made Scorsese and De Niro roll their eyes
Image
Killers of the Flower Moon marks the 10th feature collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro and the sixth between the maestro and Leonardo DiCaprio. But it will be the first big screen teaming for all three and with that came a wave of excitement from cinephiles. But that doesn’t mean there weren’t some minor personality clashes on set, as Scorsese revealed that DiCaprio’s constant improvisations and looser style led to the director and De Niro rolling their eyes behind his back.

In a new piece in The Wall Street Journal, Scorsese said DiCaprio brought an “endless, endless, endless!” amount of ad-libbing, which prompted De Niro to further delve into his own trademark ways. “Then Bob didn’t want to talk. Every now and then, Bob and I would look at each other and roll our eyes a little bit. And we’d tell him, ‘You don’t need that dialogue.

The Killers of the Flower Moon Stars First Met on a Short Film
Image
In 2015 Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Martin Scorsese all worked together on a short film to market a new Casino. The project was the first collaboration between the three Hollywood legends and showed that they were comfortable making fun of themselves long before Killers of the Flower Moon. In a way, The Audition was a sell-out project for all involved, but it gave fans to opportunity to see them all together in a less serious environment.

With the upcoming release of Killers of the Flower Moon, the latest film from Martin Scorsese, movie fans are eager to see the legendary director team up for the first time with both of his most prolific collaborators. Killers of the Flower Moon will mark Scorsese's tenth feature film with actor Robert De Niro, a collaboration that goes back 50 years to 1973's Mean Streets, and his sixth feature with Leonardo DiCaprio, but...

How Robert De Niro Helped Martin Scorsese Team Up With Leonardo DiCaprio
Image
Martin Scorsese's collaboration with Robert De Niro paved the way for his partnership with Leonardo DiCaprio, with De Niro himself recommending DiCaprio's talent to the director. De Niro's endorsement was crucial in Scorsese deciding to work with DiCaprio, and their first project together was Gangs of New York. After years of working separately with DiCaprio and De Niro, Scorsese will finally unite both actors in his upcoming film, Killers of the Flower Moon.

During the first years of his career as a director, Martin Scorsese had Robert De Niro as his main star. As time went by, Leonardo DiCaprio took his place as the filmmaker's muse. And it turns out De Niro himself was the reason this duo formed in the first place. Scorsese and De Niro began working together in 1973 on Mean Streets, the third film in the director's filmography, which marked the beginning of a long list...

Martin Scorsese’s Favorite Movies: 70 Films the Director Wants You to See
Image
“The clouds lifted” for cinema’s future recently. At least that was how Martin Scorsese felt after he saw “TÁR,” on which he lavished praise at the New York Film Critics Circle awards dinner in early January 2023.

That kind of praise means a lot. Scorsese is not just one of the greatest filmmakers of all time: he’s one of its greatest cinephiles. In recent years, he’s become known for the movies — or, as he might say of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “theme parks” — he doesn’t enjoy. But the Oscar-winning director’s favorite films are as wide-ranging in genre, year of release, and national origin as you might imagine, from Ti West’s “Pearl” to the horror flicks of Val Lewton and the works of Senegalese master Djibril Diop Mambety. He’s such an avid-moving watching buff that, in a recent interview with Time Magazine, he admitted he...

Good Boy Creative Team On Ambiguous Interpretations & Human Dog Costumes
Image
Good Boy is a love-story-turned-thriller film that mixes genres and takes inspiration from movies like Audition and Gone Girl. Director Viljar Bøe wanted to create a film that was unsettling and went under the audience's skin, making it a cautionary tale and a little nasty. The actors, Gard Løkke and Katrine Lovise Øpstad Fredriksen, brought empathy and a sense of humanity to their characters, exploring the themes of love and open-mindedness in the film.

Good Boy seems to begin as a standard love story before suddenly turning into a strange and at times terrifying thriller. In the movie, Sigrid is searching for love when she meets Christian a wealthy and charming heir through a dating app. Everything is going well until she goes to his home and meets Frank, a man who dresses in a dog costume and acts as Christian's pet dog.

This original thriller is helmed by Viljar...

Robert De Niro Vs. Leonardo DiCaprio: Which Actor Appears In More Martin Scorsese Movies?
Image
Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio have been Martin Scorsese’s go-to leading men, but which actor has starred in more of the director's movies? De Niro first collaborated with Scorsese on the filmmaker's third feature, Mean Streets, and has been playing tough-as-nails gangsters for him ever since, including roles in such acclaimed movies as Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and The Irishman. After starring alongside DiCaprio in the coming-of-age drama This Boy’s Life, De Niro recommended the young actor to Scorsese (via /Film), who cast him in Gangs of New York and kicked off a decades-long working relationship.

Scorsese’s adaptation of Killers of the Flower Moon marks the first time he has cast both De Niro and DiCaprio in the same movie. Killers of the Flower Moon is an epic Western about the Osage Indian murders of the 1920s. DiCaprio plays Ernest Burkhart, the prosecution’s star witness, while De Niro plays William Hale,...

Leonardo DiCaprio Was The First Actor Robert De Niro Ever Recommended To Martin Scorsese
Image
When Leonardo DiCaprio introduced the Life Achievement Award at the Screen Actors Guild annual ceremony in 2020, he recalled his father taking him to the cinema to watch "Midnight Run" when he was 13 years old. During the film, his dad said to him:

"If you really want to be an actor and get into this profession, if you want to understand what great acting is, you watch that man on screen."

No, he wasn't talking about Charles Grodin; he was referring to the actor honored that night for his legendary career, Robert De Niro. A few years after that trip to the movie house, DiCaprio found himself starring alongside the legendary actor in "This Boy's Life." It was a major break for the teenager after roles in "Critters 3" and "Poison Ivy," and he more than held his own against the two-time Oscar winner playing a young man suffering abuse at...

'Killers of the Flower Moon' trailer reunites Scorsese, De Niro & DiCaprio
Image
Los Angeles, May 18 (Ians) Martin Scorsese reunites with longtime muses Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in the first trailer for ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, the upcoming Western epic based on David Grann’s 2017 best-selling non-fiction book ‘Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI’, reports ‘Variety’.

Set in 1920s Oklahoma, the drama focuses on a series of Osage Nation murders over oil rights and the newly-formed FBI’s investigation into the killings. Scorsese and De Niro kept turning each other down for simple reasons
Image
This year’s Killers of the Flower Moon marks the 10th major collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, it further solidifies the pair as one of the most iconic director/actor teams in cinema history. But that doesn’t mean it comes easy, as sometimes they just aren’t feeling it.

Scorsese and De Niro had an incredible run beginning with 1973’s Mean Streets, with classics like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and more following. But after 1995’s Casino, the collaborations seemed to wear cement shoes. The reason? As Scorsese tells Deadline, sometimes there’s just a general disinterest from one of the parties.

Explaining why it took 24 years between collaborations–Scorsese and De Niro didn’t work together again until 2019’s The Irishman–the director said, “After Casino we stopped for a while and I did Kundun, and Bringing Out the Dead. And then Gangs of New York.

Robert De Niro Wasn't Interested In Making The Departed Or Gangs Of New York
Image
Whether you view him as the patron saint of filmmaking or politely respect the man and his contributions to cinema without worshipping him at the shrine, there's no denying that Martin Scorsese's new film, "Killers of the Flower Moon," is a pretty momentous occasion. It's the first time the director has collaborated with both of his muses, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, on a feature-length project, having previously teamed up with them on his 2015 meta-comedy short "The Audition." But why did it take so long?

It wasn't for lack of trying. By the time Scorsese had begun his run with DiCaprio in the early 2000s (which is now six films deep), De Niro had entered what you could dub his comedy phase. Starting with Harold Ramis' 1999 comedy "Analyze This," a movie in which De Niro knowingly sends up his mobster personas in Scorsese's "Goodfellas" and "Casino," the actor...
