Netflix on Thursday dropped the trailer for “Will & Harper,” its heartwarming documentary chronicling a road trip between Will Ferrell and Harper Steele, his friend of nearly 30 years.

But this is no ordinary trip between two besties who met in 1995 when both were hired at “Saturday Night Live” and quickly bonded. Steele wrote a bunch of Ferrell sketches and eventually became head writer. They most recently co-wrote 2020’s “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.” Two years ago, the actor received an email from Steele coming out as a trans woman. Ferrell had one proposition.

The documentary, directed by Josh Greenbaum, follows Will Ferrell and his close friend and collaborator Harper Steele, who embark on a cross-country road trip after Steele sends Ferrell a note that she was coming out as a trans woman. The 68th Eurovision Song Contest champion will be crowned tonight in Malmo, Sweden. But the action on stage is almost dwarfed by the background controversies.

The Netherlands will not be represented in this evening’s Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final after their artist Joost Klein was disqualified.

The European Broadcasting Union released a statement Saturday morning saying the Dutch artist, previously one of the breakout stars of this year’s contest with his song ‘Europapa’, would not be allowed to compete in this evening’s final.

The statement from the Ebu said: “It would not be appropriate for him to continue in the contest” while the legal process takes place.”

Sean Viator, a dancer and choreographer who performed on TV shows American Idol and Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga on Netflix, died May 3 at 31, his family announced, No cause was given.

Viator received a Bachelor’s degree of fine arts in dance from the University of Arizona, where he graduated summa cum laude. He was awarded the university’s top dance award — The Triple Threat Award.

Some of Viator’s credits include the Billboard Music Awards, appearing with Christina Aguilera and Demi Lovato, an American Idol season finale performance with Kylie Minogue, the I’m Ready music video for Sam Smith and Demi Lovato, and the Radio City Rockettes’ Christmas Spectacular, according to his biography.

10 countries have triumphed in the first semi-final of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo, Sweden, when 16 countries competed to get through to Saturday’s Grand Final.

Ukraine, whose entry Alyona Alyona and Jerry Heil spoke to Deadline last week when they pledged to give any prize money to their country’s war effort, were one of the successful countries to get through. They joined Serbia, Portugal, Slovenia, Lithuania, Cyprus, Finland, Croatia, Ireland and Luxembourg.

This year sees 37 countries taking part. The host country Sweden, plus “the big 5” countries – UK, France, Spain, Germany and Italy – all go through automatically to the Final. The other 31 countries have to compete for 20 other spots in two semi-finals taking place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Favourites to win the competition include Switzerland and Croatia. Ukraine is also creeping up the bookies’ chart to win.

Despite being significantly hit by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023, U.K. film studios and production facilities are looking to pick back up where they left off after a record-breaking year for film and high-end television production spend in 2022.

When asked what the industry can expect in terms of business in the year ahead, Samantha Perahia, head of production U.K. at the British Film Commission, says she feels positive that demand “is going to be ramping up.”

The streamer unveiled the casting change with a new clip from Solar Opposites, showing Korvo being pierced in the throat by a dart. After getting zapped by the voice-fixing ray, Korvo -- now voiced by Stevens -- tells his alien comrades to stop messing around and that they will be late for work. The first look ends with some meta-commentary on the Korvo recast. Jesse asks if Korvo is going to sound different for the rest of the series with Yumyulack responding that he sounds basically the same and that nobody will even notice the change.

Dan Stevens is officially taking over the lead voice role in Hulu’s “Solar Opposites” from Justin Roiland.

Roiland, who co-created the animated series, was fired from the show in January after it was revealed he was being charged with domestic violence. He was also removed from the Hulu animated show “Koala Man” at that time. The charges against Roiland were dismissed in March.

Stevens will play Korvo, described as “a grouchy alien who always wears ceremonial robes and professes to hate Earth. He desperately wants to fix their spaceship so he can escape to a new planet.”

Nora Forster, singer John Lydon’s wife of 44 years who has been living with Alzheimer’s since 2018, has died.

Her death was announced by Lydon’s band Public Image Ltd. Lydon had recently performed a new song, “Hawaii,” in the Eurovision 2023 contest that was inspired by her.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share the sad news that Nora Forster – John Lydon’s wife of nearly 5 decades – has passed away,” the band posted on its official Twitter page. “Nora had been living with Alzheimer’s for several years. In which time John had become her full time carer.”

Lydon, the former Sex Pistols singer, had become an outspoken advocate for Alzheimer’s awareness after he put his career on hold several years ago – including the cancellation of plans for an Public Image album in 2020 – to serve as Forster’s full-time caretaker.

BBC Studios has backed a new UK entertainment label helmed by execs Simon Shalgosky and Daniel Brookes.

The producer-distributor will distribute Rebel Rebel Pictures’ formats globally following the launch of the shingle, which will focus on primetime entertainment and factual entertainment shows.

Shalgosky and Brookes have 40 years combined experience in TV between them, with past credits including Love Island, I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent and Eurovision and past employers including ITV Studios and Seven Studios.

They were most recently running the UK label of Dutch/Belgian unscripted producer Vincent TV, which Deadline revealed in October 2021.

“Our aim for Rebel Rebel is to create some of the most imaginative shows on television with global reach,” said Shalgosky. “We are great believers in creating big formats and strive to craft shows that are so iconic, they can be recognised instantly, even with the sound turned down.

Post-punk band Public Image Ltd are among the acts competing to represent Ireland at Eurovision this year.

The band, which includes the Sex Pistol’s John Lydon (formerly known as Johnny Rotten) on vocals, wants to enter a song titled “Hawaii”.

The group will be competing to represent Ireland in the contest, which will be held in Liverpool later this year.

The song is reportedly about Lydon’s wife Nora, who lives with Alzheimer’s. The pair have been married for over 50 years and Lydon cares for her.

Jodi Chrissie Sta. Maria won best actress in a leading role for “The Broken Marriage Vow.” Korea won the best drama series for a third consecutive year for Cj Enm’s “Twenty Five Twenty One.

Will Ferrell has said he wants to take his mom to the Eurovision Song Contest next year in Liverpool – if he can find somewhere for them to stay.

“It’s in Liverpool this year, right?” Ferrell, who appeared in “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga,” asked radio host Zoe Ball while stopping into her BBC show on Tuesday morning. “My mother really wants me to take her to Eurovision, she’s dying to go and she’s always wanted to go to Liverpool.”

But the actor and comedian was concerned he might not be able to find any accommodation in Liverpool given the scale of the event. “Aren’t all the hotels booked by now?” he asked before appealing to locals to host him. “We just need a clean tidy room. With the support of the streaming giant, Kormákur came up with measures that would allow the production to get up and running again, introducing frequent testing and devising a color-coded system to control the flow of cast and crew on set.

Since then, there’s been no looking back for Kormákur and his Rvk Studios, which produced the series. “I never worked more than the year of the pandemic,” he tells Variety. “We never stopped shooting.”

It’s the latest indication that the Nordic nation known for its dramatic, other-worldly landscapes remains a hot spot for international productions, lured by highly-skilled, English-speaking crews, top-notch infrastructure, and a 25% cash rebate on qualifying spend that has been praised for its speed and efficiency.
