The Society of Composers and Lyricists announced its 2025 awards recipients at the sixth annual Scl Awards.

Composers and lyricists gathered together for a dinner and ceremony hosted by singer-songwriter Colin Hays, held at the Skirball Cultural Center. The evening opened with a performance of “Lean on Me” — meant to bring the community together after the recent wildfires that have devastated Los Angeles.

While the night’s atmosphere was overall celebratory, the awards ceremony took several opportunities to acknowledge the recent tragedy in the city. Composer Starr Parodi, who lost her home in the Palisades Fire, was given a replacement plaque for her previously earned jury award on stage.

Among the top awardees for the night were Daniel Blumberg for The Brutalist, Diane Warren for The Six Triple Eight, Kris Bowers for The Wild Robot and Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Luca Guadagnino for Challengers.

The Wild Robot‘s Oscar prospects may have gotten a boost on Wednesday as the Society of Composers and Lyricists announced its sixth annual award winners. The animated feature won Best Original Score for a Studio Film, defeating three of its Oscar rivals: Emilia Pérez, Wicked, and Conclave. The last of this year’s Best Score Oscar nominees, The Brutalist, competed in another category at the Scl Awards, winning Best Original Score for an Independent Film.

So does that mean the Oscar will come down to The Wild Robot and The Brutalist? In the Scl Awards’ previous five years, they agreed with the Oscars three times: Joker (2019), Soul (2020), and Oppenheimer (2023). In 2021, the Scl voted for Encanto (studio) and The Green Knight (independent), but the Oscar went to Dune. Sometimes, a true-crime drama comes along that simply stops you in your tracks. Hulu’s Under the Bridge is one of them. Based on acclaimed author Rebecca Godfrey’s true-crime book, the miniseries tracks the events surrounding the disappearance and murder of teenager Reena Virk in November 1997 in British Columbia.

The two top-grossing live-action films of the year — Barbie and Oppenheimer — will vie in the marquee Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Period Film categories, respectively, along with such awards-season favorites as Killers of the Flower Moon, Poor Things, Maestro, May December, Saltburn and others.

The Costume Designers Guild (IATSE Local 892) has revealed the nominees for its 26th CDG Awards, which will be handed out Feb. 21 at Neuehouse Hollywood.

Nominations for features and TV include categories for contemporary, period and sci fi/fantasy costumes. Feature nominees across those categories include Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Little Mermaid, May December, Oppenheimer, Poor Things and Saltburn.

Among the television nominees are period dramas The Golden Age, The Crown, Daisy Jones & the Six and The Great and contemporary dramas including The Morning Show, The Bear, What We Do in the Shadows, The Mandalorian and Loki.

“Succession” made sure to make history on it’s way out, earning a record-breaking nine nominations at the 2024 Golden Globes for its farewell season. Those final nominations helped HBO score 17 overall, the most of any network at the 81st ceremony; the network netted 16 nominations and its streaming service Max landed one. It won a neck-and-neck race with Netflix, which earned 15 total, with Apple TV+ just missing out on double digits with nine.

In addition to those nine “Succession” nominations, HBO had success with its other drama series “The Last of Us,” which earned three bids. “The Crown,” “Beef,” and “The Diplomat” led the way for Netflix, which also got a boost by dominating the new Stand-Up Comedian on Television category with five bids out of the six total slots. “Ted Lasso,” “The Morning Show,” and “Lessons in Chemistry” all contributed to the Apple TV+ tally.

The 81st Golden Globe Awards were announced Monday morning, ahead of the big event, set to air Sunday, January 7, 2024.

The telecast will air across CBS and Paramount+, starting at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt.

A host has yet to be revealed, but we're sure we'll get some clarity on that soon since the event airs in a month.

Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment has optioned Mother-Daughter Murder Night, the debut novel by Nina Simon that was selected last week by Reese Witherspoon as her September book club pick.

The murder mystery, which hit shelves last week from William Morrow, has been described as Gilmore Girls meets Only Murders in the Building as it follows a grandmother-mother-daughter trio of amateur sleuths.

The whodunit sees an older, high-powered businesswoman convalescing in a sleepy coastal town with her adult daughter and granddaughter. When the granddaughter discovers a body while kayaking and becomes a suspect, the trio, all fiercely independent, must come together to solve the crime, uncovering all sorts of secrets in the town along the way.

Amazon Studios’ 2023 Emmy performance is probably best encapsulated by the Outstanding Comedy Series category. There is the veteran, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which years ago landed Prime Video’s first Best Series Emmy win. It is ending its five-season run in style with 14 nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series.

This year’s Emmy nominations for the 75th Emmy Awards were released on Wednesday morning.

The Emmys live-streamed the announcement on their official website where Frank Scherma, Television Academy Chair, and actress Yvette Nicole Brown presented the nominations.

Scherma started the live stream off by introducing himself and the Emmys. “And what a great way to recognize the importance of the writers and performers and all those who created such phenomenal work over the past season,” he said.

His speech referenced the writer’s strike that is currently plaguing the film and TV industry.

“We hope the ongoing guild negotiations can come to an equitable and swift resolution. We are committed to supporting a television industry that stands strong in equity and where we can continue to honor all the incredible work you do.”

Brown added, “Nothing makes me happier than celebrating other people and their big day.”

Harrison Ford was widely expected to land his first Emmy nomination this year for his two roles in Shrinking and 1923. Instead, he failed to earn a nod for either performance despite Shrinking landing multiple nods. 1923, on the other hand, is just one of several Taylor Sheridan shows that were shut out from this year’s Emmy nominations (no nods for stars Ford or Helen Mirren), with hit series Yellowstone failing to land any Emmy noms for the second year in a row and new entry Tulsa King only scoring one nod, for stunt coordination.

In a recent The Hollywood Reporter cover story, Sheridan shrugged off his Emmys snub streak, suggesting he values his shows promoting certain ideals instead and bluntly adding, “you can keep your fucking award.”

Nominations for the 75th Emmy awards have arrived and as expected, HBO’s “Succession” led the pack with 27 nods, including 14 for acting, the same number as last year (when it broke the record for the most in the acting categories any in a single year). “The Last of Us” came in second with 24 nominations, including Pedro Pascal’s first ever, for lead actor in a drama series. “The White Lotus” (23) and “Ted Lasso” (21) rounded out to the top four.

HBO and sister streamer Max remain top of the Emmy nominations pile.

The Warner Bros. Discovery network and streamer scored 127 nominations this year, beating rival Netflix, which secured 103.

This comes after HBO and then-HBO Max scored 140 noms last year compared to Netflix’s 105. This was well down on 2021’s 129 for the Beef streamer.

The battle between HBO and Netflix has been a headline-grabbing feature of Emmy nominations since the streamer entered the awards race in 2013 with noms for House of Cards and Arrested Development.

The hire of Shinder follows the recent promotion of SVP Television Jonathan Gabay to EVP Television at Berlanti Prods., run by partners Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter and president David Madden. Like most businesses in the U.S., Berlanti Television went through some post-pandemic staff turnover. The division has been actively recruiting executives to oversee its vast portfolio of existing projects and development, and the search is ongoing.

The Festival opens the doors as the first film event in Austria which is held live again, and with an extensive, albeit naturally limited, offering. Of the total of 310 films and more than 60 planned program items, around a third can be experienced on the big screen in Vienna.

“The Six,” a documentary film shining a searchlight on the little-known Chinese aspects of the familiar Titanic story is headed for theatrical release next month in the Middle Kingdom. With James Cameron on board as executive producer and contributor, it could make waves in other markets as well.

The 97-minute feature will debut in Chinese theaters on April 16, around the 109th anniversary of the “Titanic” sinking, with the release handled by local distributor QC Media. A 60-minute version has been prepared for TV. London-based specialist factual distributor Tvf International is handling the global rights.

Despite events taking place over 100 years ago, the anti-Asian fall-out of 1912 has close parallels with the racism and antagonisms of the past year.
