Best Original Song at the Oscars presents an interesting choice for Oscar voters. With a few of the top contenders snubbed from the category altogether — “Kiss the Sky” from The Wild Robot, “Compress/Repress” from Challengers, “Harper and Will Go West” from Will and Harper — this would seem to be a cakewalk for the one original musical in the category, Emilia Pérez, which also happens to be the year’s most-nominated film. But behind-the-scenes scandals have scrambled this race, and many others. Here is our breakdown of the race as it stands today.

The Society of Composers and Lyricists announced its 2025 awards recipients at the sixth annual Scl Awards.
Composers and lyricists gathered together for a dinner and ceremony hosted by singer-songwriter Colin Hays, held at the Skirball Cultural Center. The evening opened with a performance of “Lean on Me” — meant to bring the community together after the recent wildfires that have devastated Los Angeles.
While the night’s atmosphere was overall celebratory, the awards ceremony took several opportunities to acknowledge the recent tragedy in the city. Composer Starr Parodi, who lost her home in the Palisades Fire, was given a replacement plaque for her previously earned jury award on stage.
Among the top awardees for the night were Daniel Blumberg for The Brutalist, Diane Warren for The Six Triple Eight, Kris Bowers for The Wild Robot and Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Luca Guadagnino for Challengers.

The Wild Robot‘s Oscar prospects may have gotten a boost on Wednesday as the Society of Composers and Lyricists announced its sixth annual award winners. The animated feature won Best Original Score for a Studio Film, defeating three of its Oscar rivals: Emilia Pérez, Wicked, and Conclave. The last of this year’s Best Score Oscar nominees, The Brutalist, competed in another category at the Scl Awards, winning Best Original Score for an Independent Film.
So does that mean the Oscar will come down to The Wild Robot and The Brutalist? In the Scl Awards’ previous five years, they agreed with the Oscars three times: Joker (2019), Soul (2020), and Oppenheimer (2023). In 2021, the Scl voted for Encanto (studio) and The Green Knight (independent), but the Oscar went to Dune. And for 2022, the Scl picked Nope (studio) and Everything Everywhere All at Once (independent), while the Oscars opted for All Quiet on the Western Front.

When Timothy Olyphant stars in a major TV series — Justified, The Mandalorian, Daisy Jones & The Six — that's lucky. But when Timothy Olyphant stars in a major Apple TV+ limited series based on a bestselling Marissa Stapley thriller, well then that would be Lucky. Yes, per Deadline's reporting, the man with the finest hair on the box has signed up to star alongside Anya Taylor-Joy and Annette Bening in showrunner Jonathan Tropper and exec producer Reese Witherspoon's hotly anticipated new show.
In the series, which is set to feature several episodes directed by Shōgun helmsman Jonathan Van Tulleken, Olyphant will play the father of Taylor-Joy's titular tearaway. For those unfamiliar with Stapley's book, Lucky follows the eponymous Lucky Armstrong, a skilled grifter raised into a life of crime who finds herself forced to embrace her roots once more in order to seize a chance at a fresh start. Sometimes, a true-crime drama comes along that simply stops you in your tracks. Hulu’s Under the Bridge is one of them. Based on acclaimed author Rebecca Godfrey’s true-crime book, the miniseries tracks the events surrounding the disappearance and murder of teenager Reena Virk in November 1997 in British Columbia.
Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Riley Keough headline the story, playing a cop (Cam) and an author (Rebecca) respectively. The former childhood friends are shaken by the disappearance of Virk, played with exceptional nuance by newcomer Vritika Gupta. Chloe Guidry, Javon “Wanna” Walton (Euphoria), Izzy G., and Aiyana Goodfellow portray the teens suspected of foul play. Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife) and Ezra Faroque Khan also star, playing Reena’s parents.

I remember he received it on Friday of that Fourth of July weekend. By the time we had dinner, he’d finished it. I stayed up well into the night reading and I remember emailing Reese and saying, ‘I know you’re on vacation, but I need you to take your iPad to the beach. By the time I woke up, she was halfway through the book and we were like, ‘We have to do this.

“Succession” made sure to make history on it’s way out, earning a record-breaking nine nominations at the 2024 Golden Globes for its farewell season. Those final nominations helped HBO score 17 overall, the most of any network at the 81st ceremony; the network netted 16 nominations and its streaming service Max landed one. In addition to those nine “Succession” nominations, HBO had success with its other drama series “The Last of Us,” which earned three bids. “The Crown,” “Beef,” and “The Diplomat” led the way for Netflix, which also got a boost by dominating the new Stand-Up Comedian on Television category with five bids out of the six total slots. “Ted Lasso,” “The Morning Show,” and “Lessons in Chemistry” all contributed to the Apple TV+ tally.

Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment has optioned Mother-Daughter Murder Night, the debut novel by Nina Simon that was selected last week by Reese Witherspoon as her September book club pick.
The murder mystery, which hit shelves last week from William Morrow, has been described as Gilmore Girls meets Only Murders in the Building as it follows a grandmother-mother-daughter trio of amateur sleuths.
The whodunit sees an older, high-powered businesswoman convalescing in a sleepy coastal town with her adult daughter and granddaughter. When the granddaughter discovers a body while kayaking and becomes a suspect, the trio, all fiercely independent, must come together to solve the crime, uncovering all sorts of secrets in the town along the way.
Simon, who previously wrote two nonfiction books, became inspired to write a novel after her mom was diagnosed with cancer in 2020. During doctors’ visits and chemo sessions, Simon posited the idea of a murder mystery,...

Novel-turned-Prime Video series Daisy Jones & the Six is about a fictional 1970s rock band, but anyone familiar with music history could guess the musical drama is based on the tumultuous career of Fleetwood Mac. Even Stevie Nicks agrees, as she has now given the show her stamp of approval.
“Just finished watching @daisyjonesand6 for the 2nd time. In the beginning, it wasn’t really my story, but Riley seamlessly, soon became my story,” Nicks wrote. “It brought back memories that made me feel like a ghost watching my own story. It was very emotional for me. I just wish Christine [McVie] could have seen it. She would have loved it. Hopefully it will continue…”
Riley Keough portrays Daisy Jones — the co-lead singer and songwriter of the titular band — in the series, while Sam Claflin portrays the group’s other frontperson, Billy Dunne. Taylor Jenkins Reid, who wrote the original novel, has...

Executive producer Lauren Neustadter is open to the possibility of a Daisy Jones & The Six season 2 if Amazon is interested. Co-creator Scott Neustadter and author Taylor Jenkins Reid have discussed the potential future of the show. They purposefully put the characters in their 40s during the flashforwards to show there is plenty of life left for them.
Daisy Jones & The Six has received a positive update about a potential season 2. The series, which ran on Prime Video this March, is based on the novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid, which in turn is loosely inspired by the backstage drama of the 1970s rock group Fleetwood Mac. Daisy Jones follows the titular band's rise to superstardom and subsequent breakup, bookended by flashforward interviews with the characters in their 40s. The ensemble cast included Riley Keough, Sam Claflin, Camila Morrone, Suki Waterhouse, Will Harrison, and Timothy Olyphant.

Amazon Studios’ 2023 Emmy performance is probably best encapsulated by the Outstanding Comedy Series category. There is the veteran, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which years ago landed Prime Video’s first Best Series Emmy win. It is ending its five-season run in style with 14 nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series.
There is the upstart, surprise Outstanding Comedy Series nominee Jury Duty which put Amazon’s up-and-coming AVOD platform Freevee on the awards map with four total noms, breaking new ground for ad-supported streamers.
And then there is Netflix’s Outstanding Comedy Series nominee Wednesday, produced by MGM, which has been fully integrated into Amazon Studios following the venerable Hollywood studios’ acquisition by Amazon.
The combined Amazon MGM Studios scored 68 Primetime Emmy nominations today, including nine for Daisy Jones & The Six, six (all in crafts categories) for the The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) and three for Swarm.

This year’s Emmy nominations for the 75th Emmy Awards were released on Wednesday morning.
The Emmys live-streamed the announcement on their official website where Frank Scherma, Television Academy Chair, and actress Yvette Nicole Brown presented the nominations.
Scherma started the live stream off by introducing himself and the Emmys. “And what a great way to recognize the importance of the writers and performers and all those who created such phenomenal work over the past season,” he said.
His speech referenced the writer’s strike that is currently plaguing the film and TV industry.
“We hope the ongoing guild negotiations can come to an equitable and swift resolution. We are committed to supporting a television industry that stands strong in equity and where we can continue to honor all the incredible work you do.”
Brown added, “Nothing makes me happier than celebrating other people and their big day.”

Harrison Ford was widely expected to land his first Emmy nomination this year for his two roles in Shrinking and 1923. Instead, he failed to earn a nod for either performance despite Shrinking landing multiple nods. 1923, on the other hand, is just one of several Taylor Sheridan shows that were shut out from this year’s Emmy nominations (no nods for stars Ford or Helen Mirren), with hit series Yellowstone failing to land any Emmy noms for the second year in a row and new entry Tulsa King only scoring one nod, for stunt coordination.
In a recent The Hollywood Reporter cover story, Sheridan shrugged off his Emmys snub streak, suggesting he values his shows promoting certain ideals instead and bluntly adding, “you can keep your fucking award.”
Other series that failed to score any nominations, despite experts’ predictions, include the final season of FX’s Snowfall, never recognized by the...

Nominations for the 75th Emmy awards have arrived and as expected, HBO’s “Succession” led the pack with 27 nods, including 14 for acting, the same number as last year (when it broke the record for the most in the acting categories any in a single year). “The Last of Us” came in second with 24 nominations, including Pedro Pascal’s first ever, for lead actor in a drama series. “The White Lotus” (23) and “Ted Lasso” (21) rounded out to the top four.
Netflix’s “Beef” also made history as the first limited series created by and starring Asians to land a nomination. Fans of the Amazon Prime original series Daisy Jones & the Six (which premiered in March) know that it’s not just the Fleetwood Mac-inspired music or the real-life Sunset Strip shooting locations that set the tone for the show. It’s also the ‘70s fashion that gives it a distinct sense of time and place. The fringed vests, peasant dresses, flared pants and crochet tops worn by the women leads on the show also communicate important aspects of the characters as their stories develop.

In ‘The Village’, the authorities are determined to discover why this new arrival resigned. However, No. 6 as he is now known, is equally determined...

Honestly, is there anything Reese Witherspoon can't do? There's no denying that the multi-hyphenate is one of the most powerful women in Hollywood, expertly managing to take a decades-long acting career and elevating it something so much more. Venturing into the world of producing, writing, retail and activism, the mom of three has become the sort of woman unabashedly worthy of calling Oprah Winfrey her pal. And the future ahead for the star looks even brighter than the last: She's working on Where the Crawdads Sing, Daisy Jones and the Six and the highly-anticipated Legally Blonde 3. And that's just the tip of the...

In a deleted scene from James Cameron’s Titanic, Commander Harold Lowe (Ioan Gruffudd) returns to the site of the fatal collision between the British passenger liner and an iceberg, in search of passengers. “Is anyone alive out there?” he yells into the dark sea, now littered with suitcases, pieces of wood and frozen dead bodies. “Can anyone hear me?” the captain desperately screams. Suddenly he hears a faint reply in the distance. He and his crew row in the direction of the voice until they come across a pale Chinese man floating on a scrap of the ship. They pull him ...

Chen Xi’s piece largely reads as a formal process experiment; moreover, its animation is relatively restrained. But perhaps this is where “The Six” strength lies: in its strict attention to structure.
“The Six” is screening at Vienna Shorts
”The Six” feels like an animated comic-strip in a screen split three ways. To the left and right, two moons wax and wane; they exchange the foreshadowing and aftermath of each encounter. In the center, a man seduces a new woman each month. He goes through the same repeat motions for each lover, only to be tempted by another mistress passing by his window. By the end of the four-minute short, a wandering crane steps into the center. The man steps outside his home at last, breaking free from the confines of the animated loop.
Mesmerizing and enigmatic, Chen Xi captures the elegance of the animated cycle in “The Six.” This...

“The Six,” a documentary film shining a searchlight on the little-known Chinese aspects of the familiar Titanic story is headed for theatrical release next month in the Middle Kingdom. With James Cameron on board as executive producer and contributor, it could make waves in other markets as well.
The 97-minute feature will debut in Chinese theaters on April 16, around the 109th anniversary of the “Titanic” sinking, with the release handled by local distributor QC Media. A 60-minute version has been prepared for TV. London-based specialist factual distributor Tvf International is handling the global rights.
Despite events taking place over 100 years ago, the anti-Asian fall-out of 1912 has close parallels with the racism and antagonisms of the past year. The Titanic’s six Chinese survivors miraculously escaped the shipwreck only to be vilified and refused entry to the U.S. within 24 hours of their arrival. They have been all but erased from the history books.
