Martin Scorsese may be executive producing the buzzy “Cape Fear” series adaptation, but the auteur is actually looking to get wet with a different seaside project: a Hawaii-set true crime mob drama starring Dwayne Johnson.
Deadline first reported the yet-untitled film. IndieWire can confirm from a source close to the project that Johnson and his frequent collaborator Emily Blunt approached Scorsese with the feature, who then brought in actor/producer Leonardo DiCaprio. The script is being commissioned by Nick Bilton, who produced HBO documentary “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley.”
The drama is set to star Johnson as a real-life aspiring mob boss who battled rival crime clans to control the Hawaiian islands in the 1960s. Scorsese, Johnson, Blunt, DiCaprio, and Bilton will all executive produce, along with Dany Garcia, Lisa Frechette, and Rick Yorn.

In a sign of just how difficult the documentary film business has become, Alex Gibney – one of the most prolific and well-known documentarians – has sold a majority stake in his company Jigsaw Productions to make sure it’s “around for the long haul.”
Wendy Schmidt, a longtime philanthropist and wife of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, has acquired a majority stake in Jigsaw, which has produced a number of documentary films and TV series like the Scientology doc “Going Clear,” the Elizabeth Holmes doc “The Inventor” and 2005’s “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room.”
Gibney will continue to run the company, but told the New York Times — which broke the news — that the challenging market for documentaries spurred the partnership.

It was bound to happen, we just didn't anticipate it happening this fast, but a documentary about Luigi Mangione — the man who shot the UnitedHealthcare CEO — is already in the works. Under the direction of Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney, the film will no doubt dig into the machinations behind the murder and why the 26-year-old has become something of a uniting folk hero in American society.
Gibney will produce and direct the film for Anonymous Content and his own Jigsaw Productions. According to Variety, "The new doc ... will explore how killers are created, what this killing says about our society, and the values we place on who lives and who dies."

The lore of “The Sopranos” is dissected in buzzy two-part documentary “Wise Guy: David Chase and ‘The Sopranos.'”
The feature, which debuted at Tribeca 2024, is directed by Academy Award winner Alex Gibney, who once again partners with HBO after helming “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley” and “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief.” Per the official synopsis, the documentary “delves deep into the psyche of renowned ‘Sopranos’ creator and writer, David Chase, to illuminate his life and career while offering a unique window into his unparalleled work on the iconic program.”
Of course, as “Sopranos” fans know, the series debuted 25 years ago in 1999.
For “Wise Guy,” director Gibney puts series creator Chase in the psychiatrist’s chair to analyze the origins of the iconic show that drew upon his own upbringing in north New Jersey. Lorraine Bracco, Edie Falco, Michael Imperioli, Drea de Matteo, and...

Oscar nominee Steve James (Hoop Dreams) has been set to direct Mind vs. Machine, a new docuseries on the lightning rod topic of artificial intelligence from Oscar winner Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions, Closer Media, Anonymous Content, and Emmy-winning producers Alyssa Fedele & Zachary Fink of Collective Hunch.
Gibney comes to the project after working with Closer Media and Anonymous Content on the forthcoming documentary Musk, to be distributed by HBO/Universal. Documentaries like Netflix’s Harry & Meghan are “almost in a different category,” the docs boss of Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment said today.
Responding to a question from Deadline at Mia Market, former HBO producer Sara Bernstein also said the “fees have raised in terms of what this access looks like and what it costs a producer like our company” on shows where the subjects exert a certain amount of editorial control.
Although it isn’t only Harry & Meghan that opted for this approach, the conversation was sparked by last year’s hit doc series, which was co-produced by the ex-royal duo’s Archewell Productions via a multi-million dollar Netflix deal.

If you expect the Netflix docuseries “Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of Juul” to be the ultimate takedown of controversial e-cigarettes, think again.
The four-part series, directed by R.J. Cutler and based on Time reporter Jamie Ducharme’s book “Big Vape: The Incendiary Rise of Juul,” examines all the mistakes Juul executives made, including marketing the e-cigarette to millennials. The series also suggests that the product might very well be a better option than conventional cigarettes.
Stanford graduate students and Juul founders Adam Bowen and James Monsee, who did not participate in the series, were on a smoke break when they had an “a-ha” moment. Could they create a nicotine product that was less harmful than cigarettes? Bowen and Monsee wanted to “erase combustible cigarettes from the face of the earth.” The result was Juul, an electronic cigarette startup meant to save lives that came under federal scrutiny for its own health risks.

Wind gusts quivered the tree limbs, rainfall ricocheted off the roads, and in an instant, power cut off at the old Opera House on Elm Street in Camden, Maine, scuttling screenings there at the Camden International Film Festival.
With that mid-September atmospheric outburst, Hurricane Lee did in the scheduled U.S. premiere of Alex Gibney’s new film In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon. Now, the honor of hosting the American debut goes to the Hamptons International Film Festival this Friday, where the documentary screens as the festival Centerpiece (Simon will appear in person there for a conversation moderated by Rolling Stone’s David Fear). On Sunday, the film plays across the pond at the BFI London Film Festival.

Following a three year shoot, award-winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney has just completed production on In Restless Dreams: The Music Of Paul Simon, the documentary about Paul Simon’s legendary Grammy Award-winning career. The film is expected to be part of the fall film festival circuit.
In the film, Gibney and Simon journey through a dreamlike world of storytelling, an absorbing portrait of an artist, that transcends both time and space moving freely between present and past, showcasing both his music making in the here-and-now and a unique peek into his career, from Tom & Jerry to Simon & Garfunkel to the triumphs of Graceland and Rhythm of the Saints. Alex Gibney, the Emmy- and Academy Award-nominated documentary filmmaker behind “Taxi to the Dark Side,” “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room” and “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley,” will next set his sights on Elon Musk with “Musk,” described in the official announcement as “a definitive and unvarnished examination of multi-billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and Twitter.”

Exclusive: Kyle Stroud and Frank Ponce of production and finance outfit Carte Blanche, which has credits including Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter, are partnering with Joey Tuccio and Dorian Connelley’s Roadmap Writers to launch a genre screenwriting competition.
Carte Blanche will greenlight and finance at least one feature that comes through the initiative at a budget of sub-1M, though this figure could be increased depending on the elements involved such as cast.
Scripts should have no more than five characters and five locations, and will focus on a contained, character-driven story. Projects including Timecrimes, Buried, and Monsters are all cited as comps, the producers said.
The competition’s jury will consist of producer Liz Cardenas of A24’s A Ghost Story, Carolina Groppa, who is in charge of production at Issa Rae’s ColorCreative, Giselle Johnson of Sony/Screen Gems (Don’t Breathe), and Pixar alumni Colin Levy.

“The Dropout” is among many star-driven limited series competing for the attention of viewers (and Emmy voters) this TV season. The Hulu series stars Academy Award nominee Amanda Seyfried as entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes, who was convicted of criminal fraud for swindling investors on the accuracy of her blood test technology. The series operates as a compelling rise-and-fall journey for Holmes’ company, Theranos, and delves into the psyche of the disgraced CEO that drove her to chase success by any means necessary.
TV critics have not only praised Seyfried for her chilling portrayal of Holmes but the series around her. Multiple reviewers compare “The Dropout” favorably to similar true-crime series released this year. Variety writes, “‘The Dropout’ succeeds where ‘Inventing Anna’ doesn’t,” while Time claims that Seyfried’s approach to making her character human is “refreshing,” particularly “at a time when so many docudramas delight in mocking their subjects.” The...

Spoiler Alert: This piece contains spoilers for the first three episodes of “The Dropout,” which premiered on Hulu March 3.
In the final moments of the third episode of “The Dropout,” Amanda Seyfried’s Elizabeth Holmes finally transforms into the figure that those of us obsessed with her story — as recounted in John Carreyrou’s book “Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup,” Alex Gibney’s documentary “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley” and indeed in “The Dropout” podcast on which Elizabeth Meriwether’s Hulu adaptation is based — have been waiting to see. Throughout the episode, Elizabeth has been practicing her newly baritoned voice, and having batted back Theranos’ insurrectionist board of directors — powerful men of her own choosing, who’ve nonetheless started to realize that she’s lying about the company’s technology — she dons the all-black Elizabeth Holmes uniform from tip to toe. Staring into a mirror resolutely,...

This article contains potential spoilers for The Dropout.
Fraud: so hot right now.
We’ll leave it to the sociologists to determine exactly why, but stories about big time liars are huge right now. The recent trend arguably got started this year with the Netflix series Inventing Anna, which covered one woman’s successful attempts to convince New York society she was a German heiress. Coming up later in March is WeCrashed on Apple TV+, which will follow the meteoric rise and precipitous fall of joint workspace company WeWork.
Now Hulu is presenting its own fraudulent epic with limited series The Dropout, which is set to unpack arguably the most flagrant, outrageous, and bizarre case of corporate fraud in the new millennium. The Dropout is based on an ABC News podcast of the same name, which was in turn inspired by Wall Street Journalist John Carreyrou’s coverage of entrepreneur...

The upcoming Hulu series "The Dropout," starring Amanda Seyfried and Neveen Andrews, follows the rise and fall of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. Holmes founded Theranos in 2003 after dropping out of Stanford college and sought to make blood testing more accessible to the public through revolutionary technology. By 2014, Theranos had an estimated value of $9 billion, but as the company continued to grow, so did suspicions about the efficacy of its technology. After The Wall Street Journal published an exposé about Theranos and Holmes, her business and the house of cards she'd built to sustain it quickly crumbled.
"The Dropout" is a dramatization of Holmes's beginnings, her quick rise to becoming one of the world's richest self-made billionaires, and her demise. If you're looking for a refresher on the story of Theranos and Holmes before "The Dropout" hits Hulu on March 3, these documentaries and podcasts have you covered!

Mere days after rapper and self-proclaimed “serial entrepreneur” Heather Morgan was arrested for conspiring to launder $4.5 billion in stolen Bitcoin, Netflix announced it has ordered a docuseries on her and her husband, Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein, who was also picked up by the feds.
The docuseries will be directed by Chris Smith, who will also executive-produce alongside Nick Bilton. Smith helmed Netflix’s Fyre Festival documentary, as well as the recent HBO surfing docuseries 100 Foot Wave. Bilton, meanwhile, is a Vanity Fair journalist who also served as a producer on...

The team behind Netflix’s Fyre Festival documentary and HBO’s Elizabeth Holmes doc have teamed up to produce a docuseries about a pair of alleged bitcoin money launderers.
Netflix has ordered a series about Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan, who were arrested and face charged for conspiring to launder around $3.6B worth of Bitcoin.
Morgan, a hipster rapper otherwise known as Razzlekhan and Forbes contributor, and her husband Lichtenstein were arrested earlier this week in New York after being accused of conspiring to launder nearly 120,000 Bitcoin tied to the 2016 hack of a virtual currency exchange.
The value of the stolen Bitcoin soared from $71M at the time of the hack to nearly $5B and they allegedly tried to liquidate their digital money by creating fake identities and online accounts, and buying physical gold, NFTs, and more – all while investigators raced to track the money’s movement on the blockchain.

One of the trickier aspects of impersonating fallen Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes is her deep-throated voice, but Jennifer Lawrence is set to take it on for the likely next film from her “Don’t Look Up” director Adam McKay, “Bad Blood.”
The film is based on John Carreyrou’s 2018 nonfiction book “Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley,” about the rise and fall of the multibillion-dollar Silicon Valley startup that set out to revolutionize blood tests but unraveled as Holmes was eventually convicted of four counts of wire fraud and conspiracy (out of 11 federal charges). Lawrence will be the first actress to portray Holmes on the big screen, though her story has been memorably brought to life in the podcast “The Dropout” and Alex Gibney’s documentary “The Inventor.”
McKay recently told Insider that Lawrence has already begun work on nailing that particularly unique accent of Holmes’.

MK2, the venerable family-owned film group which operates a leading arthouse multiplex chain in France and Spain, is emerging from the pandemic stronger, cooler and more ambitious than ever.
Nathanaël and Elisha Karmitz, who succeeded their father Marin at the helm of the company in 2005, have galvanized the MK2 brand with activities ranging from films, art, publishing, technology and lifestyle. The common threads between all these ventures are a taste for singularity, curation and a socially-minded approach.
After scoring big at Cannes in 2019 with Mati Diop’s “Atlantics” and Celine Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” which competed and won prizes, MK2 Films will again boast a fairly large presence for the festival’s comeback edition with nine films across several selections, including the competition with Joachim Trier’s “The Worst Person in the World,” the new Cannes Premiere section with Andrea Arnold’s “Cow,” Un Certain Regard...

New Delhi, June 5 (Ians) Three Indians have emerged winners in the ‘3D Design Challenge by French 3DExperience major Dassault Systemes.
While Ayush Agrawal won for creating a 3D working model of a paddle boat, Atharva Dingore 3D-designed a cannon and Kiran Nikwade a car.
Each winning project will be 3D-printed and featured in "The Inventor," the new animated film about Leonardo from Jim Capobianco, the Academy Award-nominated writer of the Pixar film "Ratatouille," the company said in a statement on Saturday.
The challenge invited individuals to showcase their 3D skills by using Dassault Systemes' Catia, Solidworks or xDesign applications to create a 3D working model of an invention from Leonardo da Vinci's codices in real-life dimensions.
Out of 45 projects, five winners were selected based on how closely their entry replicated the original codex, how well their entry's 3D modelling and mechanics articulated the movements intended by Leonardo in his original sketch,...

The Inventor will encompass both 2D and puppet animation, the latter sequences to be directed by Capobianco, who also penned the screenplay. The $10 million movie is now in pre-production, with delivery scheduled for spring 2023. As Deadline previously revealed, voice cast include Stephen Fry, Daisy Ridley, Marion Cotillard and Matt Berry.

Amanda Seyfried will play disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in Hulu’s “The Dropout,” replacing Kate McKinnon.
McKinnon, who is in the middle of Season 46 of “Saturday Night Live,” left the series earlier this year amid scheduling issues. Seyfried will also serve as a producer.
“The Dropout” tells the story of how Holmes raised hundreds of millions of dollars to fund Theranos and became a media darling, while hiding the fact that her touted blood-testing machine didn’t really work. "Everything about WeWork was propaganda." Of course it was. Hulu has released an official trailer for the documentary film titled in full WeWork: Or the Making and Breaking of a $47 Billion Unicorn. This just premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival last week and will be streaming on Hulu at the start of April for anyone curious to hear this story. WeWork: or the Making and Breaking of a $47 Billion Unicorn explores the rise and fall of one of the biggest corporate flameouts and venture capitalist bubbles in recent years – the story of WeWork, and its hippie-messianic leader Adam Neumann. Was he trying to start a cult? Was he a megalomaniac? Or was he just obsessed with money like everyone else? This is similar to not only the Fyre Festival docs, but it also reminds me of Gibney's The Inventor, about a snake oil salesman grifting his way into the billion dollar club.

It’s never the biggest movies that premiere on opening night of the Sundance Film Festival, but they’re always worth looking at carefully since they do set the tone for what comes next. I reviewed the first films I saw in 2020 and 2019 for this site, and they were both among the best films I saw each year – Summertime, director Carlos López Estrada’s follow-up to another Sundance opening night premiere, Blindspotting, coming out sometime this summer, and the Alex Gibney documentary The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, which ended up debuting on HBO.
That impressive club adds a new member this year in the form of Coda. I didn’t realize until I finished watching the film that its title is an acronym for Child of Deaf Adults...

“Bigotry and insanity are different,” Psychiatrist Dr. Dorothy Otnow Lewis says at the beginning of HBO’s documentary Crazy, Not Insane. The idea that someone can kill for perfectly sane, yet irrational reasons goes to the heart of the controversial doctor’s work. Her mother seemed to be able to name every famous anti-Semite. Henry Ford, Richard Wagner, Joe Kennedy and “even Walt Disney,” Lewis lists. The man who made Bambi, which made Lewis cry as a little girl, hated Jews, she bemoans as the film unfolds. You never know what lies underneath even the most innocent appearing exteriors, director Alex Gibney’s documentary, highlights.
The documentary then cuts to one of Dr. Lewis’ earliest cases, the serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin. He preferred to be called a multiple slayer. While Lewis explains how she hoped, at the time of her interviews, she would not be prejudiced, the documentary explores...

Psychiatrist Dr. Dorothy Otnow Lewis is an influential and controversial figure. She interviewed Ted Bundy four times in 1986 at the request of the defense. Dr. Lewis pioneered psychiatric legal avenues by exploring trauma as root causes of horrific crimes in many cases. HBO’s upcoming Crazy, Not Insane will explore Dr. Lewis’ “lifelong attempts to look beyond the grisly details of homicides into the hearts and minds of the killers themselves,” according to the advance press. The documentary debuts Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 9 pm.
Directed and produced by Oscar-winner Alex Gibney, Crazy, Not Insane seeks to challenge “the very notion of evil and proposing that murderers are made not born,” according to the press statement. The documentary, which includes videotaped death row interviews, examines formative experiences and neurological dysfunction as contributing factors in crimes of serial killers such as Bundy and Arthur Shawcross.

Oscar winner Alex Gibney‘s new documentary “Totally Under Control,” which he wrote and co-directed with Ophelia Harutyunyan and Suzanne Hillinger, is already available to rent on demand via streaming services, but will be more widely available through Hulu beginning Tuesday, Oct. 20. The film is another addition to the sea of information about how the United States government mishandled the initial response to the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic. In that regard, it’s not as much an enlightening documentary as a timely one, seemingly aimed at giving voice to scientists and public health experts who appear in the film to narrate all the ways the Trump administration’s response failed the country.
