What’s Coming to Hulu and Disney+ in August
Image
As the TV world kicks into high gear with Emmys season, streaming platforms are still hard at work to bring the latest in film and television right into your homes. August’s offerings on Hulu and Disney+ include a handful of new movies, family-friendly programming, a lot of “Ice Age” and “John Wick,” and the return of Chris Hemsworth’s quest for immortality. Disney+ has livestreams planned for outdoor adventures and World Princess Week, as well as the animated anthology “Eyes of Wakanda,” set in the “Black Panther” universe; while Hulu will premiere a new season of “King of the Hill” and a two-episode limited series about the wrongfully convicted Amanda Knox.

Top Pick: “FX’s Alien: Earth”

In Noah Hawley’s latest installment to the “Alien” universe, it’s the year 2120 and our planet is ruled by corporations (yikes!). Five giants run the world: Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic, and...

‘The Substance’ Hair Boss Reveals She Was Ousted From Oscar Nomination In Favor Of Assistant
Image
Days before the Oscars, a war of words has broken out between two key below-the-line workers over the credits on The Substance.

Frédérique Arguello, who was head of the hair department on the Demi Moore-led horror movie, claims she was passed over for an Oscar nomination in the Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling category in favor of her assistant Marilyne Scarselli.

Scarselli, alongside special makeup effects designer Pierre Olivier Persin and key makeup artist Stéphanie Guillon, are listed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as the official nominees in the category, one of five overall noms for the horror movie written and directed by Coralie Fargeat.

However, Arguello claims that despite the best efforts of distributor Mubi to include her, she was shunned from the list.

It comes as The Substance is one of the favorites to win the category, going head-to-head against A Different Man,...

Kieran Culkin
Oscars 2025 | The nominations are in
Kieran Culkin
Kieran Culkin, Conclave, Ariana Grande and more have been nominated for golden men. Here’s the list of Oscars 2025 nominations:

We’ve put on our finest clothing and poured a glass of champagne in honour of the Oscar nominations that have just emanated from the Academy’s chimney.

Among the big names in the running for an award this year are Wicked star Ariana Grande for Best Supporting Actress, Kieran Culkin in the Best Supporting Actor category for his engaging turn in A Real Pain, and Nosferatu for Best Make-Up & Hair. (We like to think that it was Bill Skarsgård’s moustache that swung the latter nomination.)

Fun fact: three of the five nominations in the Best Visual Effects category have primates in. Something for the VFX studios out there should think about if they want a nomination next year.

The 97th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on the...

‘The Substance,’ ‘The Deliverance’ and ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Lead Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Nominations
Image
Coralie’s Fargeat’s “The Substance,” “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “The Deliverance” led the 12th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Award nominations.

The body horror of Fargeat’s “The Substance” resonated with the make-up and hair stylist guild with three nominations. Special effects artist Pierre Olivier Persin explained that Fargeat wanted to use practical effects, instead of digital CGI, where possible. 70-80% of what was seen in the film was practical, including the MonstroElisaSue creation which features at the end.

“Gladiator 2” and “Deadpool and Wolverine” each landed two nominations a piece. Other films that scored include “Shirley,” “Bob Marley: One Love” and “The Last Showgirl.”

Missing from the nominations were nods for “Maria,” “Nosferatu” and “Dune: Part II.”

In the television category, “Dancing With the Stars” landed five nominations across the hair and make-up categories.

Lady Gaga’s “Chromatica Ball Film” was also nominated, landing her personal makeup artist,...

Allen Media Group Shuttering The Weather Channel En Español
Image
Exclusive: Allen Media Group is shuttering The Weather Channel en Español at year end, the latest hit in a round of belt-tightening.

“As part of Allen Media Group’s extensive cost-cutting measures, The Weather Channel en Español will cease operations on December 31, 2024,” Amg said in a statement to Deadline on Monday.

The move is the latest in a string of measures to cut costs. Earlier this month, the company owned by Byron Allen said Pattrn, a climate-themed Fast channel owned by Amg, will stop programming next month, returning to its social media roots and keeping a weekend TV presence on The Weather Channel.

In October, Amg had a round of layoffs with the exits of key members of its weather, news and sports teams, impacting The Weather Channel, its AVOD service Hbcu Go as well as its Entertainment Studios and ad sales divisions.

The company earlier announced layoffs last spring...

Vance-Walz Debate Draws 43.2 Million Viewers, Down 25% From 2020 VP Faceoff
Image
Wednesday’s vice presidential debate between Republican candidate Jd Vance and Democratic nominee Tim Walz was mostly free of fireworks, and that was perhaps reflected in the ratings for the event as well. The debate, produced by CBS News and moderated by the Eye’s Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan, drew approximately 43.2 million viewers — down 25% from the 2020 vice presidential debate between Mike Pence and Kamala Harris, which averaged 57.9 million viewers.

The CBS debate was simulcast on ABC, Fox, NBC, PBS, CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, NewsNation, Merit Street Media, Scrippts News, CNN en Español, Fox Business Network, NBC Universo and Newsmax, and ran from 9 p.m. to 10:45 p.m. Et.

Also in comparison, last month’s Presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump averaged more that 67 million viewers.

Wednesday night’s debate included divisive issues including immigration and Jan. 6.

Harris-Trump Debate Outperforms Biden Debate in Viewership, Attracting 67.1 Million Viewers
Image
Update: Nielsen’s full measurement of Tuesday night’s presidential debate between vice president Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump was strong, with 67.135 million viewers tuning in via multiple networks — led by ABC News, which handled the debate. That number was up 31% from the 51.266 million who tuned in to Trump’s debate with president Joe Biden (from CNN) in June, before the latter dropped out to endorse Harris.

Tuesday’s total accounts for telecasts across ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, Merit Street, Scripps News, Telemundo, Univision, BET, CNN, CNN en Español, Fox News Channel, Fox Business, MSNBC, Newsmax, NewsNation and PBS.

Disney’s dispute with DirecTV — which has kept ABC and its other networks blacked out on the satellite service — didn’t appear to have a major impact on the Alphabet net’s numbers, as ABC News won the night with 19.049 million viewers — making it the most-watched debate on any network in at least 16 years,...

Earlier in the morning, Biden posted a video on X prodding Trump to debate him. In it, Biden made fun of Trump’s ongoing criminal trial for hush money payments, referencing how Trump’s trial skips meeting on Wednesday.

“Donald Trump lost two debates to me in 2020. Since then, he hasn’t shown up for a debate,” Biden said. “Now, he’s acting like he wants to debate me again. Well, make my day, pal. I’ll even do it twice. So let’s pick the dates, Donald. I heard you’re free on Wednesdays.”

Within the hour, Trump responded on his Truth Social platform, writing: “Crooked Joe Biden is the Worst debater...

Jamie Lee Curtis, Michelle Yeoh, James Hong, Ke Huy Quan, and Stephanie Hsu in Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Oscars 2023: ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ Wins Best Picture (Complete Winners List)
Jamie Lee Curtis, Michelle Yeoh, James Hong, Ke Huy Quan, and Stephanie Hsu in Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
It turned out that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was pretty much everything to every Oscar voter. Of its 11 nominations, it won seven, including the big one: Best Picture. The last Best Picture winner to win that many statuettes was “Gravity” in 2014.

“Eeaao” started off strong when Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor. Then Jamie Lee Curtis nabbed Best Supporting Actress and, later in the evening, the Daniels took home Best Original Screenplay. By the time it won Film Editing, the seemingly unstoppable breakout hit‘s momentum was undeniable. It then went on to triumph in Best Director, Best Actress and finally, Best Picture.

Much of the evening went according to Steve Pond‘s predictions in his final analysis of the race. “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” won Best Animated Feature, the first award of the night, and “Navalny” won Best Documentary. During his acceptance speech, “Navalny” director Daniel Roher...

2023 Oscars guild awards scorecard: ‘Everything Everywhere’ wins (almost) everywhere
Image
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” capped off its run with the guilds by taking home a trophy at the Casting Society of America’s Artios Awards on Thursday. It had previously prevailed with eight of the other nine guilds at which it contended. It lost out only with the sound editors.

Two of its Academy Awards rivals for the top award — “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — did win over the sound editors. Those victories are among their overall hauls of four apiece. “Elvis” also prevailed with the cinematographers, costume designers, and makeup artists/hairstylists while “Top Gun: Maverick” scored with the actors, film editors and sound mixers.

Below, a breakdown by picture of guild nominations and winners.

Ace = American Cinema Editors

Adg = Art Directors Guild

ASC = American Society of Cinematographers

Cas = Cinema Audio Society

CDG = Costume Designers Guild

CSA = Casting Society of America

Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards preview: Which Oscar nominees will win here first?
Image
Two of the five Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling — “The Batman” and “Elvis” — contend in three categories apiece at the guild awards on Feb. 11. Another contender, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” has a pair of bids while “The Whale” has a single nomination. The fifth Oscar contender, “All Quiet on the Western Front,” was snubbed by the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards.

Last year marked the first time in the nine-year history of these guild awards that the eventual Oscar winner was shut out here first. “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” lost both period/character races (hairstyling to “Being the Ricardos” and makeup to Oscar rival “Cruella”) plus the special effects category to another Oscar contender, “Coming 2 America.” The other two Oscar nominees — “House of Gucci” and “Dune” — were also overlooked by the guild despite three and two bids respectively.

Our exclusive odds predict that five films...

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Most Watched Marvel Global Premiere On Disney+; Samba TV Measures 2.1M U.S. Households
Image
Disney is calling their five-time Oscar-nominated Black Panther: Wakanda Forever the most watched Marvel premiere ever on Disney+ on a global basis. Without supplying viewership figures, the company said Monday that the claim is based on hours streamed for the pic over its first five days.

The Ryan Coogler-directed sequel, which has amassed 842.3 million at the global box office, dropped February 1 on Disney+ after an 83-day theatrical window.

Meanwhile, Samba TV, which measures viewership across a panel of 3 million U.S. smart TVs, says the Live+4D household viewership was 2.1 million.

That’s a notable number, tracking 400 ahead of the same frame for Black Adam‘s 1.5M draw on HBO Max, the same as Disney/Marvel Studio’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and just under that of Thor: Love and Thunder (2.2M).

Of the above movies, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever over-indexed by the highest margin among...

The 2023 Oscar Nominations Are A Pleasant Surprise
Image
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will never, ever get it entirely "right" on Oscar nomination morning. There will always be baffling misses and outright travesties. Comedies will always get overlooked in favor of weightier dramatic works. The Best Animated Feature bias against anime is, sadly, very real. And if you're a horror fan, there's never a reason to get out of bed at an unreasonable hour to discover that -- shock, gasp -- the year's best fright flicks were once again completely shut out of every category.

The Oscar nominations are always about adjusted expectations. The major Oscar contenders are, like politics, predetermined by campaign spending. Publicists have to trot the hopefuls out for cocktail receptions and Q&As. Typically, you know weeks ahead which films and artists are serious contenders, so if you were hoping that, say, Nicolas Cage was going to come flying off the...

The 2023 Film Awards Calendar Returns to Normal — So Far
Image
After two years of pandemic delays, the 2022 – 2023 Oscar season is coming into focus as a return to normal. This year’s Oscars will air live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, March 12, 2023, two weeks earlier than last year’s delayed Oscars and a month later than the pre-covid 2020 ceremony.

The Academy is staying away from Super Bowl Lvii on February 12, 2023, while leaving plenty of time for Oscar-show planning after the nominations announcement on January 24, 2023. New Academy CEO Bill Kramer is already getting started with early ideas for the show.

With theaters open, the Academy has returned to both the usual 12-month calendar year and six-city theater eligibility requirements. One thing we still don’t know about the upcoming awards lineup: whether January’s Golden Globes telecast will return to NBC, which canceled the 2022 awards show to give the Hollywood Foreign Press Association time to institute long overdue reforms.

For the new version of “Breakaway,” Lavigne restored some of the original lyrics, which reference her childhood in Canada. (A lyric video for “Breakaway’ is available on Facebook.

As of last weekend, the highest-grossing title since cinemas were allowed to reopen in the UK on May 17 was Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway with £15.3m. While an opening weekend of that amount would be an extraordinary result with 50% audience caps still in place,...
