The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle

Why Rene Russo Disappeared From Hollywood
Image
When a Hollywood actor is big and making lots of movies, it kind of feels like they'll stick around forever. There are plenty who do, but so often a familiar face will enjoy a hot streak before vanishing from the limelight. Back in the '90s we had a number of such actors. Alicia Silverstone, Meg Ryan, and Bridget Fonda all hit their peak during the decade and became household names thanks to their hits. And then they were gone, either suffering from a string of poor choices (Silverstone), taking a break from acting (Ryan), or retiring altogether (Fonda). Another Hollywood star who enjoyed her heyday in the '90s before vacating our multiplexes was Rene Russo. But why exactly did she disappear from Hollywood?

Russo was one of several models who crossed over into acting during the '90s. Some made a big splash in their breakthrough roles, like...

Robert De Niro at an event for A Single Man (2009)
Meet The Parents 4 | New sequel in development
Robert De Niro at an event for A Single Man (2009)
Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller are returning for Meet The Parents 4, continuing a franchise which has been tolerated since the start of the millennium.

Though Robert De Niro is quite rightly acclaimed as one of the greatest actors of all time, his forays into comedies have been mixed, to say the least. Analyze This and Analyze That did a good job of parodying his tough guy screen persona, and Midnight Run is one of the all time great buddy comedies. But in recent years, you really do have to wonder why he put his name to films like The Adventures Of Rocky And Bullwinkle and gross out comedy Dirty Grandpa. Cash, presumably.

His most successful foray into comedy – commercially if not critically – is easily the Meet The Parents franchise, which was a remake based on a 1992 independent film of the same name written by Greg Glienna (who directed) and Mary Ruth Clarke.

Who Plays The Older James Ryan In Saving Private Ryan
Image
Matt Damon famously plays the younger version of the eponymous James Ryan in Saving Private Ryan, but who plays the older version in the framing narrative? Although the accuracy of whether or not the U.S. military would risk an entire platoons lives to bring one soldier home has been called into question, Saving Private Ryan is renowned as one of the greatest war movies ever made. Tom Hanks portrayal of Captain Miller subverts the usual brave-faced war heroes played by the likes of John Wayne to show that most World War II soldiers were just regular people drafted to fight.

Since its the most iconic stretch of the movie, Saving Private Ryans D-Day landings sequence is often described as its opening scene. But the movie actually opens with a framing device. In the present day, an older James Ryan visits the Normandy Cemetery to pay his respects to his fallen brothers-in-arms.

Robert De Niro at an event for A Single Man (2009)
Why Jane Rosenthal Added an Entire Robert De Niro Mini-Festival to This Year’s Tribeca Festival
Robert De Niro at an event for A Single Man (2009)
The Tribeca Festival started in the shadow of Sept. 11, as founders Robert De Niro, his longtime collaborator Jane Rosenthal and real estate investor Craig Hatkoff (at the time married to Rosenthal) attempted to bring commerce and culture back to Lower Manhattan.

In the years since, it has exploded in popularity and importance, with major film premieres and fine discoveries playing every year — now with even more to see and experience.

“There’s always challenges,” Rosenthal said about putting on a festival of the size and complexity of Tribeca. “We were the first festival that came out of Covid. It was great. There’s always challenges, always challenges.”

This year Tribeca is embellished with something else – a complementary festival called De Niro Con, which celebrates the life and career of the Tribeca cofounder that coincides with his 80th birthday. There will be special screenings, conversations and live events.

“I am excited for De Niro Con.

Robert De Niro Was the Most Brilliantly Bizarre Part of This 2000s Flop
Image
The turn of the millennium was an interesting time for children's cinema. The 3D animation of Pixar and DreamWorks through titles such as Toy Story, Bug's Life, and Antz set a new precedent for cartoons with a completely different production process than that of the hand-drawn, 2D classics of yesteryear. Live-action family films seem to be slowly losing their popularity, with fewer of the Hollywood blockbusters for kids' of the 90s getting made, like Jumanji or Parent Trap, replaced with cynical, industry-driven productions like the post-Home Alone 2 sequels or the Cheaper by The Dozen remake, which bombed critically and failed to garner any staying power. Right in the middle of this strange, transitory period for kid's entertainment, we got one of the weirdest family films ever made, with an even weirder choice of star for the role of the main villain: The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, with an all-star...

8 Actors Who Worked Together In More Than One TV Show
Image
Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are a comedic duo who have worked together on shows like All That and Kenan & Kel, bringing their hilarious sense of humor and chemistry to the screen. Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion have a longstanding working relationship, having appeared in shows like Firefly, Con Man, and The Rookie. Their onscreen collaborations have proven successful and enjoyable for viewers. Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, who previously worked together on Friends, have a unique chemistry that shines through in their performances on The Morning Show, where they play the roles of newscasters.

A TV show is made even more special when actors who have worked together before reunite on a new project. TV shows often feature dynamic duos that have great chemistry and are a match made in TV heaven. However, that doesn't mean that every actor who has worked together on more than one TV...

Writers Strike Puts Spotlight Back On Animated Scribes’ Challenge To Be Covered By The WGA
Image
At the start of the writers strike, The Animation Guild, an entirely separate union to the WGA, came out in support of the labor action, pledging to “stand in solidarity” with WGA members.

However, as the strike hits the eight-week mark, one of the key issues in the TV animation world has reared its head again: the unusual way that animation projects are covered by labor unions.

Michael Jamin, a co-executive producer of animated series including King of the Hill and Brickleberry as well as live-action series such as Tacoma Fd and Lopez, highlighted the topic in a recent video (see it below).

“By some strange loophole, animated shows are either covered by the Animation Guild or the WGA, and strangely, it’s the studios that get to decide which one, not the writers themselves,” he said. “It seems to be me as that should be illegal, it seems like...

What Happened to Saturday Morning Cartoons?
Image
Television animated series began with Crusader Rabbit in 1950, followed shortly by The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, a creation of Crusader Rabbit's producer Jay Ward. Animated series would reach immense popularity with the prime-time show The Flintstones in 1960, proving there was an audience for animation on TV (it held the record for longest-running prime-time cartoon until The Simpsons surpassed it with the February 1997 episode "The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show"). As the 1960s wore on, the perception of animation was that it was a children's medium, prompting networks to move animated series from prime-time to Saturday mornings. The Golden Age of the Saturday morning cartoon began in 1966 when all three major networks aired animation blocks on Saturday mornings. Nothing lasts forever, as they say, and after years of running on fumes, the ritual drew its dying breath in 2014, when The CW canceled The Vortexx. So what happened?...

‘Good Burger’ Sequel with Kenan & Kel Ordered at Paramount+
Image
Welcome to Paramount+, home of the “Good Burger 2” movie. May Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell take your order?

Paramount+ has ordered up a sequel to the ’90s-kid classic film “Good Burger.” Both Thompson and Mitchell are coming back to reprise their respective roles as Dexter Reed and Ed, reuniting the Nickelodeon comedy duo more than 25 years after the first movie’s release.

“I can’t believe it’s been a little over 25 years since great customer service was born at Good Burger! Being a part of something so many generations of people have come to love has made me so proud and now to be back where it all began working on the sequel is surreal,” Thompson said in a statement shared with IndieWire. “Love performing with my brother Kel and can’t wait to show the fans what these characters have been up to since we last saw them.

Don Jurwich, Animation Writer-Director-Producer, Dies At 87
Image
Don Jurwich, a longtime writer-director-producer at Hanna-Barbera and Marvel Productions, died July 13 of natural causes. He was 87.

Starting his career in animation as a layout and background artist, Jurwich worked his way up in storyboarding, eventually becoming a producer and director.

Superman: The Man of Tomorrow – Trailer and Release Date for New DC Animated Movie
Gene Hackman, Terence Stamp, Ned Beatty, Christopher Reeve, Jackie Cooper, Sarah Douglas, Jeff East, Margot Kidder, Jack O'Halloran, Valerie Perrine, and Susannah York in Superman (1978)
If there’s one thing DC loves, it’s reboots. The comics cycle through their continuity in one form or another every decade or so, the movies…well…that’s a whole thing, too. So of course now it’s time for the DC animated movies to get a fresh start. And this time, they’re doing it with the hero who should pretty much always be the center of these things: Superman.

Since 2014, there have been 20 DC Universe Animated Original Movies, most of which existed in a shared continuity that began with Justice League: War and culminated in this year’s Justice League Dark: Apokalips War. With that story arc now complete, Superman: Man of Tomorrow will set up a new continuity for future movies. Butch Lukic is the new Supervising Producer for these DC movies, with Chris Palmer directing Man of Tomorrow.

The voice cast includes Darren Criss (Glee) as Clark Kent/Superman,...

‘Looney Tunes Cartoons’: HBO Max Launches with the Return of Bugs and the Gang
Image
The return of classic-style Warner Bros. animation with “Looney Tunes Cartoons” for this week’s launch of HBO Max took some persuading at the studio: Would kids under 10 get the slapstick humor and find the legendary Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety Bird, and the rest of the gang relatable? That’s when showrunner Pete Browngardt (“Uncle Grandpa”) suggested group testing some of the old cartoons for families to see how they played.

“There was a concern about the familiarity of the characters and how violent they could be,” Browngardt said. “And they worked perfectly. They’re perfect capsules of comedy.” Among the cartoons they tested were “The Great Piggy Bank Robbery” (1946) with Daffy at his loony best, and “Easter Yeggs” (1947) with Bugs and Elmer Fudd. Unfortunately, the gag with a revolver as a pacifier didn’t go over well given the preponderance of elementary school shootings, so they...

‘Star Wars Resistance’ Actor Rachel Butera’s Twitter Account Deleted After She Ridiculed Christine Blasey Ford’s Voice
Rachel Butera
The Twitter account of Rachel Butera, the voice actor who plays Leia Organa in Disney Channel’s upcoming “Star Wars Resistance” animated series, has vanished.

The disappearance of her Twitter handle came after a backlash over a video Butera posted mocking the voice of Christine Blasey Ford, who testified Thursday in a highly charged Senate hearing that Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted her.

“I just have this kind of a voice, like a baby, even though I’m a doctor and I’m on this media circus, political stage, and I have kids myself, that I don’t know why I speak with vocal fry,” Butera said in the video (pictured above) she posted on Twitter along with the comment: “I can’t believe this is my voice, can you???. Tara Strong Talks Amazon’s ‘Rocky and Bullwinkle,’ Navigating the Voice Industry
Tara Strong
“The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle” executive producer Scott Fellows knew a voice was missing when the casting team replayed the audition tapes for the show’s titular flying squirrel. “Where’s Tara Strong?” he asked.

Strong had submitted voice auditions twice for the character of Rocky — once for the initial call, which proved unsuccessful, and another when her agent told her Rocky would be recast. Until Fellows inquired, casting agents had pushed her auditions aside. But upon hearing her tape, they immediately changed their minds.

“This is no fault of any studio, but a lot of times they say, ‘Oh that actor’s on everything, so let’s try new blood,'” Strong tells Variety. “Which truthfully is silly because voice actors who work all the time do so because they’re versatile, and sometimes you have no idea it’s that person.”
