Writer and director Sam South appears alongside 'Wynonna Earp' star Dominique Provost-Chalkley in a delightful short about resources in post-apocalyptic London. Faced with the very recent death of their friend Jeremy, Julie casually suggests to Steven that they should eat him.
Putting aside the cannibalism, 'Eat Jeremy' presents 10 minutes of what could be just another day in the neighborhood: a discussion of what to have for dinner; an argument over a silly game that resulted in an unfortunate accident. That the scenario is shown to us in such a plain, matter-of-fact, and nonchalant fashion is where lies the punch of this fun short film.
The black and white presentation adds a bit of stark flair to the picture, as does the clever opening shot of a melon squashed on the ground. But even with the sounds of sirens, gunshots, and radio broadcasts adding flavor to the world, this is simply an enjoyable little feature. The humorously relaxed composure of the sketch is punctuated with a last one-on-one dialogue between Julie and Steven as we see their expectations undone behind them, and then - roll credits.
I love that this is set very candidly in a single city flat, lending credence to the plot's notion of a lockdown while also simplifying the production. Without any need for blood or gore, 'Eat Jeremy' is a neat little short that offers a background of horror to complement its comedy, and is a fine watch for all viewers.
