Ben Affleck in Hypnotic (2023)

News

Hypnotic

Image
Hypnotic | In 2023, Robert Rodriguez casually dropped one of the weirdest heist scenes ever
Image
Starring Ben Affleck, the thriller Hypnotic slipped into cinemas in 2023. But its heist sequence really has to be seen to be believed…

At their best, heist scenes are pure cinema: a collision of suspense, intrigue, character and satisfying pay-off. There’s the anticipation of the planning; the nail-biting tension of the act itself. Will one of the thieves make a mistake? Will a bank clerk press one of those red buttons underneath a desk? Will the whole operation end in success or bullet-strewn failure?

The heist is such an effective plot device that entire stories can be built around it. Much of the Ocean’s films are about the plotting and mathematical precision that goes into, say, breaking into a Las Vegas vault. Christopher Nolan’s Inception – essentially a mind heist – spends much of its duration exploring how Leonardo DiCaprio’s protagonist assembles a team capable of messing with Cillian Murphy’s head.

Can ‘The Accountant 2’ Pass Final Global Box Office Milestone?
Image
Having completed a full month of release in theaters worldwide, time is running out for director Gavin O’Connor’s The Accountant 2 to pass what will likely be its final box office milestone. The action sequel has had a solid run at the box office, even if it wasn’t able to match the surprisingly stellar performance of its predecessor. Also directed by O’Connor, the original film — The Accountant — debuted in 2016 and grossed over $150 million worldwide. It became an even bigger hit on home video, which is perhaps what prompted a sequel to be put into production. Unlike the first film, which was distributed by Warner Bros., The Accountant 2 is an Amazon MGM project.

Despite the studio’s frequent assertions about its loyalty to the theatrical experience, Amazon MGM movies are designed, ultimately, for home video consumption. The Accountant 2, like last year’s mega-budget Christmas-themed film Red One,...

‘The Accountant 2’ Earns Six Times as Much as Ben Affleck’s 85% Rotten Tomatoes Sports Drama
Image
Three films targeted at basically the same demographic — A Working Man, The Amateur, and The Accountant 2 — have coincidentally earned roughly the same amount at the global box office. Jason Statham’s action vehicle is leading the pack with $98 million at the global box office, followed by Ben Affleck’s The Accountant 2, which recently overtook The Amateur’s $93.2 million global haul. Whether it is able to pass the coveted $100 million mark remains to be seen, but The Accountant 2 has out-performed several of Affleck’s recent films, which is a considerable achievement in these uncertain times.

That being said, the actor hasn’t delivered a bona fide blockbuster since the firstThe Accountant, which was released theatrically by Warner Bros. nearly a decade ago. The movie grossed over $150 million worldwide against a reported budget of $45 million. By comparison, The Accountant 2 was produced on a reported budget of $80 million. It...

Beep Beep: ‘Coyote Vs. Acme’ Heads To The Cannes Market With Kinology Aboard For International Sales — Hot Project
Image
Exclusive: One of the year’s most intrigue-filled movies is heading to the Cannes market for sale: the former Warner Bros live-action/animation hybrid Coyote vs. Acme.

We can reveal that Grégoire Melin’s Paris-based Kinology will serve as international sales agent for Ketchup Entertainment, which bought worldwide rights to the film from Warner Bros in a big deal earlier this year and is releasing in North America at a date tbc.

We understand there will be footage for buyers to see and potentially a market screening but the latter isn’t set yet.

Will Forte, John Cena and Lana Condor star in the movie, which follows Wile E. Coyote, who, after Acme products fail him one too many times in his dogged pursuit of the Roadrunner, decides to hire a billboard lawyer to sue the Acme Corporation. The case pits Wile E. and his lawyer (Forte) against the latter...

Relativity Media Plots Return, Aims To Jumpstart Growth With Content Partners Investment
Image
Content Partners Capital, the newly launched private capital division of Content Partners, and Relativity Media have closed a strategic growth financing, a move they say marks a major step in Cpc’s mission to offer “bespoke capital solutions to entertainment and media businesses” while supporting the transformation of a well-known Hollywood name.

Cpc’s first investment will bolster Relativity Media’s capital base for acquiring new films for theatrical distribution and help it expand its film and television library, acquire IP and build out its independent film and TV slate. The size of the investment wasn’t disclosed.

CEO Lex Miron said Relativity intends to spend approximately $100 million acquiring domestic film rights over the next three to five years. The plans is to release 4-6 projects within the next year, and 7-10 projects within the next two years.

“This transaction exemplifies our core thesis at Content Partners Capital — to back...

Relativity Media Wants to Be a Player Again
Image
The Relativity Media banner may conjure memories of the Ryan Kavanaugh era. There was that data-driven formula to “predict” box office success and minimize risk, the highs of hits like Bridesmaids and Mamma Mia!, the lows of the likes of Masterminds, the nine-figure financing rounds and ultimately the bankruptcy filings. (The Kavanaugh quote “Am I sorry? Of course I am,” once graced the cover of The Hollywood Reporter as the company crumbled ten years ago.)

Since Relativity Media emerged from bankruptcy in 2018 it hasn’t been affiliated with Kavanaugh and has kept a lower profile than its heyday. Its ownership group is titled UltraV Holdings LLC and includes former Bally Technologies chief David Robbins, Miron and funds managed by CEO Stephen Ketchum’s Sound Point Capital.

Relativity started its latest chapter with U.S. rights to Angelina Jolie and David Oyelowo-starrer Come Away in 2020. This was the Covid year of shuttered theaters,...

‘The Accountant 2’ Has Grossed Four Times as Much as Ben Affleck’s Mega-Budget Historical Bomb in Just 10 Days
Image
Last year, Amazon MGM unveiled the mega-budget Christmas-themed film Red One in theaters, attracting negative press for the film’s perceived underperformance at the box office. It was argued, however, that the film’s theatrical run was essentially a publicity tool for its eventual release on Prime Video; similar arguments have been made in defense of the numerous box office misfires produced by Apple Studios. They can also be made in defense of Amazon MGM’s latest offering, The Accountant 2. Directed by Gavin O’Connor, the movie serves as a sequel to his 2016 hit The Accountant, starring Ben Affleck in the titular role.

The first film was distributed by Warner Bros.; it grossed over $150 million worldwide and found an even bigger audience on home video. This is perhaps what inspired them to put a sequel together. Anything that The Accountant 2 makes at the box office is a bonus; the...

Netflix's ‘Conan the Barbarian’ Series Gets a Long-Awaited Update From Director: "They Let the Rights Lapse"
Image
The long-rumored Conan the Barbarian reboot series just got a definitively devastating update from its director. Most are familiar with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s chiseled portrayal of the hero in the 1982 film, but Conan the Barbarian is actually based on a string of short stories from Robert E. Howard. The film was remade in 2011 with Jason Momoa taking on the lead role, and there was reported to even a TV series reboot in the works for years. Robert Rodriguez, best known for his work on the Spy Kids franchise, was even attached as a director, but the project has reportedly been scrapped for now. Rodriguez recently sat down with Joe Rogan for an episode of his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, and he provided an update on the show, even going as far as to say what led to its demise:

"Netflix had it. I went and pitched it to them.

‘The Day the Earth Blew Up’ Fights Against a Major Drop to Hit Another Box Office Milestone
Image
The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie has crossed another global box office milestone during its third weekend in theaters. Despite dropping 59% this weekend, The Day the Earth Blew Up has reached the $10 million mark at the global box office, with $8 million coming from domestic earnings and $2.2 million coming from international markets. The film wasted no time becoming the highest-grossing domestic movie ever for its distributor, Ketchup Entertainment, beating Ben Affleck’s Hypnotic, the 2023 sci-fi thriller that grossed only $4.5 million domestically. The latest Looney Tunes movie is also knocking on the door of becoming one of the top 20 highest-grossing movies of the year domestically, with its $8 million total leaving it $2 million behind Becoming Led Zeppelin in the #20 spot.

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes movie opened with $3.1 million at the box office the weekend of March 14. This was enough to earn the film a spot in the top five,...

Coyote Vs. Acme Movie Saved As Warner Bros. Reportedly Set To Sell Film For $50 Million
Image
While it once seemed improbable, it looks like Coyote vs. Acme may soon be coming to a theater near you!

According to Deadline, Ketchup Entertainment is in advanced negotiations to acquire the animated/live-action hybrid feature from Warner Bros, in a deal that's estimated to be in the $50 million range. The independent distributer-financier previously rescued The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, which is currently playing in theaters.

In recent years, Ketchup has also been behind the releases of Weekend in Taipei, Goodrich, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, Memory, Ferrari, Hypnotic, and Bushwick.

The trade does note that the deal could still fall apart, but things are progressing in the right direction for now. If/when the deal is finalized, expect to see Coyote vs. Acme hit theaters sometime in 2026.

The studio previously tried to sell the film early last year for approximately $70 million, which is believed to...

John Cena & Will Forte's 'Coyote Vs Acme' Seemingly Saved, Will Get Theatrical Release

There’s a major new update on the live-action/CG-animated Coyote Vs Acme!

If you recall, the movie was fully filmed and in the post-production phase ahead of a release, when Warner Bros Discovery decided to scrap the movie completely in November 2023.

Shortly after that news was announced, it was then revealed that Wbd reversed course after immense online backlash and was going to search for a new home with a distributor or streaming service to take on the project.

Keep reading to find out more…

Now, THR reports that Ketchup Entertainment is in talks for a deal to acquire the movie for a theatrical release. However, there is not a final deal at this time.

‘Coyote vs. Acme’ Lives: Ketchup in Talks to Release Axed Warner Bros. Movie
Image
It turns out that’s not all, folks. The “Looney Tunes” live-action hybrid film “Coyote vs. Acme” has finally found a new home — and with a theatrical release. Ketchup Entertainment is set to acquire the Warner Bros. Discovery (Wbd)-axed film, according to reports. IndieWire has reached out to reps at Wbd and Ketchup for confirmation. Wbd had no comment. A source close to the film said the Ketchup deal is indeed in the works.

As Deadline reported on Wednesday, Ketchup Entertainment is negotiating an all-rights acquisition in the $50 million range for “Coyote vs. Acme,” with respect to the film’s reported $70-million budget.

If the deal closes, “Coyote vs. Acme” will also receive a theatrical release, much like the critically acclaimed “The Day the Earth Blew Up.” Originally commissioned for Max, “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie” also landed at Ketchup Entertainment. The film has...

‘Coyote vs. Acme’ Rescued After Warner Bros. Axes Finished Film
Image
More than a year after Warner Bros. shelved “Coyote vs. Acme” for tax incentives, the Looney Tunes-inspired film is close to finding a new home.

Ketchup Entertainment is expected to land distribution rights for “Coyote vs. Acme.” Thought the sale has not closed, the price tag is reportedly in the $50 million range, according to Deadline, which broke the news.

Ketchup Entertainment, an independent distributor, recently spearheaded the theatrical release of “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie” after Warner Bros. Discovery decided to shop that film as well. “The Day the Earth Blew Up” opened in theaters on March 14 and has grossed $3.9 million at the domestic box office to date.

“Coyote vs. Acme,” a live action-animation hybrid starring John Cena and Lana Condor, was directed by Dave Green and produced by DC Studios co-chief James Gunn. Warner Bros. shelved the completed film in November 2023 as a $30 million tax write-off,...

‘Coyote vs. Acme’ Could Find New Life with ‘Day the Earth Blew Up’ Distributor
Image
Coyote vs. Acme, the film that ignited social media when Warner Bros. canceled it for a tax write-off, may see the light of day after all. Indie outfit Ketchup Entertainment is eyeing the rights to the film, which stars Will Forte and John Cena opposite an animated Wile E. Coyote.

Ketchup and Warners have been discussing a roughly $50 million deal for some time that would put the project in theaters in 2026, though it’s still unclear if it will close. Warner Bros. declined to comment.

Ketchup has a history putting Looney Tunes movies in theaters. It distributed The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie after Warner Bros. Discovery opted to shop the film rather than release it itself. Released wide last weekend, it has earned $5.5 million globally.

Ketchup has also backed projects such as Hellboy: The Crooked Man, Ben Affleck starrer Hypnotic and Michael Mann’s Ferrari.

Why Hayna From Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Looks So Familiar
Image
The following contains spoilers for "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" season 1, episode 4, "Can't Say I Remember No At Attlin."

Neel (voiced by Robert Timothy Smith) on "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" might look like a cute "Star Wars" mascot character archetype, but the plucky blue alien keeps subverting the odds and is well on his way to establish himself as the series Mvp. In episode 4, titled "Can't Say I Remember No At Attlin" after Sm-33's (voiced by Nick Frost) surprisingly meaningful favorite saying, Neel's courage saves Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), and Kb (Kyriana Kratter) from certain death. Meanwhile, his pacifism and honesty manage to impress future Troik clan chieftain Hayna so thoroughly that his charm may inspire her to become a peaceful ruler -- thus potentially ending the cycle of violence that has plagued At Achrann for who knows how long.

The tough but thoughtful Hayna is deftly played by Hala Finley.

From the Brink to the Big Screen: How the Looney Tunes Film Defied the Odds
Image
The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, the first-ever fully animated film based on the Looney Tunes characters, which hit U.S. theaters Dec. 13, almost didn’t happen. Several times.

“At least three, four times during the production I was waiting for that phone call [to shut down the movie],” says director Peter Browngardt. “It was a rocky journey.”

That’s putting it mildly. Browngardt was brought on in mid-2021 to produce and direct The Day the Earth Blew Up as his feature debut. Browngardt was a writer on the popular, and critically acclaimed, HBO Max Looney Tunes reboot, a series of new original shorts featuring the classic Tunes characters which seemed to prove there was an audience out there for more Looney. Browngardt and his writing team — some 15 writers and story consultants are credited on the movie — came up with an original idea involving Daffy Duck and Porky Pig uncovering a...

Mix one of the most famous modern-day Hollywood actors with the man who directed 1996’s From Dusk Till Dawn and 2003’s Once Upon A Time in Mexico. The result is an action thriller where Ben Affleck suddenly has the powers of Marvel’s Doctor Strange — just on a shoestring budget. Oh, and there’s some family drama sprinkled in there, too. Image
Netflix announced today that its action-packed espionage series, The Recruit, will return for its second season on January 30, 2025. The series comes from Entertainment One (eOne), Alexi Hawley, and Hypnotic.

The Recruit Season 2 finds CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks (Noah Centineo) pulled into a life-threatening espionage situation in South Korea, only to realize that the bigger threat just might be coming from inside the Agency.

“Owen rolls into this season basically screwed. Owen knows that if he does not walk away with a win this season, his career is going to be over. He might go to prison,” said creator, showrunner and executive producer Alexi Hawley.

“Depending on what people are into, they can show up this season for the big, flashy, splashy action stuff, but they can also be on a journey with this guy who’s just trying to fix something that he broke.”

Image
The music documentary Takin’ Care of Business took care of business at the inaugural Round Top Film Festival in Texas.

The film about Canadian rock musician Randy Bachman – founder of the bands The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive – earned the Audience Award at the debut event in the small town 75 miles east of Austin. The feature directed by Tyler Measom explores how Bachman searched for decades for a precious musical instrument that was stolen from him – his beloved 1957 Gretsch 6120 guitar on which he wrote the hits “American Woman,” “Takin’ Care of Business,” and “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet.”

“We are so honored to receive the Audience Award from the Round Top Film Festival!” said Russell Wayne Groves, producer of Takin’ Care of Business. “From the incredible festival founders, Shanna and Skylar Schanen, all the way to the amazing volunteers who kept things running smoothly, we are just humbled...

Epilogue: Kate Siegel, David Dastmalchian star in zombie movie produced by Mike Flanagan
Image
Mike Flanagan and David Dastmalchian are both prominent figures in the horror world, so it’s somewhat surprising that their first collaboration came not on a horror project, but on Flanagan’s upcoming movie The Life of Chuck – which, despite being a Stephen King adaptation, is a drama. Today, Deadline has announced that Flanagan and Dastmalchian are set to work together again… and this time the project is a horror film. Flanagan will be producing Epilogue, which Dastmalchian will star in alongside Flanagan’s wife and frequent collaborator Kate Siegel. Michael Fimognari, who worked as cinematographer on most of Flanagan’s work and directed episodes of The Midnight Club and The Fall of the House of Usher (not to mention the films To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You and To All the Boys: Always and Forever), will be directing, working from a screenplay by Luke Barnett and Tanner Thomason.

Ben Afflecks New Action Franchise Is The Closest Thing Well Get To His Unmade Batman Movie
Image
Superhero lovers have long been disappointed that Ben Affleck never got his own Batman movie, but hopefully, the actor's upcoming action sequel can make up for this loss. Since he first entered the movie scene in the 1990s, Ben Affleck has collected a number of interesting and diverse roles. He has leaned into his Boston roots with Good Will Hunting and The Town. He has dipped his toes into historical dramas like Pearl Harbor and The Last Duel. However, what are arguably Affleck's most notable movies are his action and superhero projects.

From 2016 to 2023, Ben Affleck took on the legendary role of Bruce Wayne, aka Batman. Alongside Henry Cavill's Superman and Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, Affleck enjoyed two big movies as the Dark Knight, and three cameos. However, among these appearances, Affleck never got his own Batman movie. He appeared in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League,...

The Worst Netflix Original Horror Movies, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
For the horror heads among us, perusing a streamer's genre page can be a goldmine of camp opportunities or disturbing folk horror to keep us up at night, but it can also be home to some of the most tedious stories put to film. Whether it's an ill-advised continuation of a franchise or an adaptation in the wrong hands, even the mighty Netflix isn't immune to acquiring, producing, and/or distributing some stinkers. In fact, they tend to excel at it.

While Rotten Tomatoes isn't the be-all and end-all of movie criticism (and it almost seems to be trying to discredit it more and more), it can provide a quick temperature check to a movie's well being -- a helpful measure for all of us when considering how we want to spend our time rotting away on the couch. Mileage can vary on how much to trust the aggregated rating of a bunch of critics,...

Jennifer Lopez & Ben Affleck Did Not Sign a Prenup: How Much Do They Stand to Lose?
Image
Most celebrity gossip fans were not surprised when Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce from Ben Affleck this week. However, the news that the couple had not signed a prenup came as a bit of a shock.

After all, these days, even middle class couples are playing it safe and protecting their assets before they exchange vows.

In the case of couples who might have to work out yacht custody in the event of a split, we just assume prenups are just a matter of course.

Obviously, Ben and Jen are both quite comfortable and won’t need to take on second jobs at Starbucks anytime soon.

But the lack of a prenup might still prove to...

Image
After months of alleged tension between the couple, who have been reportedly living separate lives for quite some time now, Jennifer Lopez has finally pulled the plug on her marriage with Ben Affleck. But while many anticipated this falling out, the real shocker of the situation is that there is potentially no prenuptial agreement between the two stars.

In Lopez’s divorce filings from Affleck, there were no mentions of any prenuptial agreement, which would mean their earnings in the last two years would be classified as community property.

Five Serial Killer Horror Movies to Watch Before ‘Longlegs’
Image
Here’s what we know about Longlegs so far. It’s coming in July of 2024, it’s directed by Osgood Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter), and it features Maika Monroe (It Follows) as an FBI agent who discovers a personal connection between her and a serial killer who has ties to the occult. We know that the serial killer is going to be played by none other than Nicolas Cage and that the marketing has been nothing short of cryptic excellence up to this point.

At the very least, we can assume Neon’s upcoming film is going to be a dark, horror-fueled hunt for a serial killer. With that in mind, let’s take a look at five disturbing serial killers-versus-law-enforcement stories to get us even more jacked up for Longlegs.

Memories Of Murder (2003)
