Chaos of the world in a great song

Another great moment for Peter Gabriel right out of the highly successful album "So", "Red Rain" got a late video in 1987 - the album is from the previous year - video such that isn't wildly artsy as the masterpiece "Sledgehammer" as it is more obscure with its visuals and symbolisms.

Much to the audience surprise, the color red is quite absent from its settings, and instead the makers opted for a more somber presentation of everything, as if we're watching a doomed, apocalyptical world where female dancers make their act in the shadows, and as Gabriel's face and hands brightly white appear against a dark background.

The artist concerns range many social/historical references that were motive of panic and fear around the world such as the disposal of nuclear waste, the atomic disasters like Chernobyl, and even the AIDS epidemic that had as its symbol the red ribbon. The visuals from the video might not show the rain dreamt by Gabriel, it evokes a damaged and hopeless world scenario, the chaos felt by the Cold War generation for decades - then barely imagining it was soon to end in a couple of years.

A very reflective song about world problems and done in a fashion that truly suits everything, with Gabriel making use of different instruments of world music, many rhytmic drums, percussions, with artists from all over the globe, just as Paul Simon did in his album "Graceland", also from 1986. Truly masterful in everything. 8/10.
