Mattioli Productions does it again with another gripping tale, this time set in the seedy world of nightclub male dancing, where Jonathan Salazar delivers an amazing performance as the dancer who falls in love with a straight man. It deals with themes many gay people face: regret, ostracization and dealing with the rejection from the straight world. It gives a little insight into the complex emotions that LGBTQ folks go through when forming relationships with people, and how to deal with the fact that many. Mattioli is a visionary in that he loves to elevate the tales of the community to create a gripping narrative.
Very much enjoyed this movie I do hope that they have a sequel because they left it wide open.
"Neon Boys" is earnestly a sweet and short story that is elevated into something magnificent with the glittering and breathtaking work of directors, Mattioli and Salazar, and cinematographer, Cory Green. The simple plot is compensated for in the encompassing environment of the film. Dazzling lighting emphasizes and characterizes the setting as much as it aids in bringing the characters alive. Likewise, the shadows it casts give presence to the film's darker underbelly. Kinkel and Salazar's natural and smooth acting compliment the other elements perfectly. The pure emotions of the film can never be mistaken.
