Jayasurya shines in his role as a man struggling to rebuild his identity as a new transwoman,in the generally patriarchal and regressive minded society of Idukki in Kerala. The opening scene itself displays the uneasiness of church goers in his presence. Marykutty (Jayasurya) quits his job as an IT professional and wishes to be a Superintendent of Police, but faces a lot of humiliation and harassment along the way. The most disturbing scene is when Marykutty is humiliated by his sister, who warns him not to attend her wedding as he will embarrass her. It just reinforces the foolishness of the old adage "Blood is thicker than water". Family is just a part of society that happens to share genetic ties with a person, and it is good that the director made an effort to educate people about the fallacy of familial bonds. The character of the villainous police officer who tries extra hard to humiliate Marykutty was perhaps a little overplayed, but without him, Marykutty's struggles would not have stood out that much. Innocent's role as the sympathetic and supportive priest was soothing. So was the radio jockey and the lady who plays the role of Marykutty's friend. Many scenes in this movie are emotional but not excessive. Jayasurya portrayed his character with tenacity and should be applauded for his willingness to do so.
It is a fabulous movie which completly explains how to get out off the closet in an arrogant, drastic and horrendous community. Mr. Jayasurya who plays the lead charactor in this movie, taken his all efforts to show what all stigma has to be get rid off from the society in this 21st century. Its a completly wow movie, which gives us travel through his transexual life in day to day hurdles.
Liked the film very much. Thanks to jayasurya for his courage to take this role. Really inspiring film. Everyone should see thus film. Must watch. You will love this. Really an inspiring work to elevating a community needed to be uplifted to the front row. Its a thrilling film which i assure you. Please do watch the film and encourage these type of courageous works and entertain these type of films. These type of films will uplift our society and uplift the perspectives of people to a long extend. In the mean while it entertains and thrills you. It's a brilliant work for sure and everyone needs applause.
Other than th3 brilliant portrayal of Jayasurya as a transsexual, this is another one of Ranjith Sankar's preachy social commentary with little importance for the narrative. To top it, the politics of the film, how transgenders are treated by the society is shown in a minimum risk way that cater to the public views rather than actually being politically correct. But I have to admit if it wasn't as preachy and inspirational, if it was politically correct it wouldn't have been such a commercial success as it is now. For the most part it did change the perceptions of at least a small part of the Keralites.
First malayalam movie to shoe the story of a transgender. Ranjith Shankar could have done a lot better with this opportunity. The direction and not so strong screenplay holds the movie back. Jayasurya's performance is the main factor which keeps the movie's pace.
