    Cookie cutter wedding film

    7.2 stars.

"A Harvest Wedding" is lacking something, where is the oomph? A wedding planner named Sarah (Wagner) who currently lives in New City, is planning the wedding for the brother of an ex-boyfriend she hasn't seen in 15 years. David (Webster) the ex-boyfriend is a farmer and the wedding will take place on his farm in Pennsylvania. The weeks leading up to the wedding have run amok.

This movie has cookie cutter written all over it, however it was released in 2017, so maybe it wasn't so unoriginal back then. The most positive aspect is that the wedding ceremony is simple and elegant. Also favorable is the cinematography and music. I was impressed by the very end, make sure you see the last 30 seconds, it's quite amazing.

The chemistry was a bit off, and I am astounded at the audacity of it. Both of these actors rarely fail in the chemistry department, but for some strange reason they weren't on the same page. After all the similar Hallmark films I've watched, why did this one fall short? I was expecting at least average, but Miss Wagner is hit and miss and I perish the thought. It's probably not her fault.

    Wedding at fall

There were two main reasons for watching 'A Harvest Wedding'. One was that it was part of my recently started quest to see as many Hallmark films as possible. The other was Jill Wagner, have seen her in a good number of Hallmark films and have always been impressed by her. The films themselves varied (as is the case with pretty much all actors and actresses), but Wagner has never been less than watchable. Victor Webster, while not as familiar with him, has been good elsewhere too.

Both come off well here. A lot of the recently seen Hallmark films have not impressed me all that much, but 'A Harvest Wedding' was a major step up. Most of the 2017 Fall Harvest block was average or less, but 'A Harvest Wedding' was one of two exceptions. The other being 'Falling for Vermont', the others in the block being a case of good casts conceptually but wanting in other areas. 'A Harvest Wedding' isn't great, but of the 2017 Hallmark films it's in the better half.

Sure, the story may mostly not be out of the ordinary and is a little bit of a slow starter.

While liking that the ending was different to usual, the ending was executed a little too cheesily and hastily in my view. The music is pleasant enough in a way but had a rather schmaltzy samey quality to it.

On the other hand, Wagner gives a very nuanced yet spirited performance, and is ideally matched in the subtle charm and easy going nature departments by Webster. Their chemistry is very genuine and natural, though there could have been a little more development to the romance perhaps. The supporting cast are solid and the characters weren't too perfect or overly-negative, while not complex and quite cliched they also weren't ciphers.

It's a beautifully filmed film too and the scenery captivates in beauty. The script is light hearted and made me smile, while also having heart. The story isn't exceptional, but it didn't come over as too dull and its feel good nature and warm charm made it difficult to resist.

All in all, not great but worth a look. 7/10.

    Quietly good

After 3 duds, Hallmark's Fall Harvest got one right.

The story was almost believable, except for the very end which was off-the-scale unbelievable, but funny and cute. Yes it was sappy, but the story managed to keep us interested with some drama and small surprises here and there.

Jill Wagner and Victor Webster, two veterans for Hallmark, were good together. Wagner did a nice job keeping Sarah fairly grounded despite many stressful situations both in her job and personal life. Wagner managed to stay the romantic focus of the movie despite two other gorgeous ladies in the story, the bride and her assistant.

I love Jill Wagner and Victor Webster...they make this harvest romance worth watching.

Sarah ends up back in her Virginian farming hometown at the farm of her childhood sweetheart, David, planning the wedding for his younger brother Tom and his bride-to-be Abby.

It's a large working organic farm in the middle of their fall harvest...and the wedding is in under a month, to add an additional stressor, Sarah is having a wedding magazine article written about her that might make the cover.

I really love Jill Wagner and Victor Webster, their acting is so effortless and natural. I enjoy the banter and really believe they could be a real-life couple.

Misunderstandings abound but this rustic second chance romance is worth seeing for romantics out there who enjoy a simple Hallmark Romance. Kudos to the writers there is a lot of true to life dialogue...like when the father is ecstatic to have his daughter home and says, "Just because you haven't been here in awhile doesn't mean this isn't still your home.", a sentiment my own father has expressed to me more than once.

I also thought it was a nice touch to win over the debutant mom with a pair of boots and a quote from Marilyn "Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world."

While the storyline indicates the main character drives from New York to Massachusetts, and the movie was actually filmed in British Columbia, there is a scene during her drive which is clearly stock footage showing the Lin Cove Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway in western North Carolina.
