The best episode of the series

His portrayal of an addict is absolutely amazing, and I usually am not that impressed with addict portrayals. I wish the entire series would have been him in this stage; but then that wouldn't have progressed the story along too well.

The scenes with him and the woman in the armenian restaurant, and the ashes in the hotel room should be shown in film schools.

Swing and a miss for Benedict

We're both big fans of Benedict, but this doesn't work. Not having done most of the drugs he consumes in this episode, I can't tell if his acting is accurate. But, I don't really care. His character was a (very) rich, self-indulgent man who I can feel no empathy for, and worse, don't care to follow. Just not an interesting story.

    Great start!

This episode was really interesting and promises a good future. Benedict Cumberbatch did a really great job. The story also refers to the destruction of drugs, and that's great.

    • Trivia
The first episode is actually based on the second novel in the Patrick Melrose-series.
    • Goofs
While in the restaurant in New York in 1982, Patrick asks for a quarter for the telephone. Beginning in 1951, the cost to make local calls on pay phones in New York was 10 cents and did not increase to 25 cents until June 1984. The cost was so well-known it led to the slang expression "dropping a dime" in reference to calling the police.
