This movie was clearly making a parody of how to train your dragon and used a lot of that in both the early story and visual jokes. I found the chemistry with both the protagonists and antagonists really funny. As well as many of the side characters' lines. All the character designs are amazing and unique, I especially liked the old dragon's design. Throughout the movie there were blink and you'd miss it visual gags to many films and tropes and it was all and all a fun film that managed to stay lighthearted when dealing with rather dark themes.
The story was very basic and unoriginal. It did not give sufficient time at the beginning of the film to introduce the main characters, so you never feel an emotional connection, before they set of on their routine adventure.
The humour is not funny. CGI of the landscapes looks good but the character's human faces are average.
Kids under 8 will be fine with it, but kids upwards might not enjoy it much.
I am not familiar with the book so I can't comment on that aspect but I found this movie really fun. My three year old enjoyed it and I had a few chuckles at some of the dialogue. It's a enjoyable kids movie. Enjoy it for what it is, a fun kids movie!
They didn't want to watch it when I first put it on but were gripped right to the end. Entertained kids = happy parents.
From what I've seen in the comments people are calling this a rip off of how to train your dragon, Eragon, Moana. This film and story is adapted from a book written more than 2 decades ago. If these reviewers took 30 seconds to do a quick google search they would find that all of the movies that this one is "pulling ideas from" might in fact be taking ideas directly from Cornelia Funkes 'Dragon Rider'. Now this film did not do the original text justice but it is as original as a story gets and largely influences other dragon animations of the last 20 years. Unless of course you're suggesting that the author has super powers and was able to time travel, watch movies that would be released well into the future, and then pen a story about them, you people are nuts.

- TriviaThomas Brodie-Sangster never met the cast while filming this movie.
- GoofsIn the film, a basilisk is paralysed by seeing its own reflection in a mirror. However, the glare of a basilisk would also paralyse any creature that it set eyes on, so the heroes of the film would have been paralysed the moment the basilisk discovers them.
