Mamoru Hosoda's 'Scarlet' Sets Release Date With Surreal Trailer
Image
Mamoru Hosoda’s next animated film, Scarlet, has set a December release date. The movie follows Oscar-nominated Japanese filmmaker’s Cannes hit Belle and is highly anticipated among genre fans. Sony will distribute the feature outside Japan while Toho will handle the film’s domestic theatrical distribution. While all the details are kept tightly under wraps, the movie is described as “the story of a brave princess who transcends time and space.”

A new trailer has been released, accompanying the release date, which brings ethereal landscapes to life as our titular heroine prepares for battle. The slick animation sees her turning from a princess to a blood-soaked warrior, and that’s probably enough to get fans into the theatres.

The movie’s official website describes Scarlet as a survival story, as the (translated) log line reads, “Princess Scarlet, whose father was killed and whose revenge failed, wakes up in the ‘Land of the Dead.

5 Best Oscar-Nominated Anime Movies, Ranked
Image
The 2025 Academy Awards have come and gone, and the anime community once more finds itself disappointed with no nominations within the field. The Oscars have had a long history of overlooking anime, but to be snubbed for another year—especially when Kiyotaka Oshiyama’s Look Back was more than eligible for the running—had anime fans everywhere shaking their heads.

Previous anime productions have snagged an Oscar in the past, however. Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away became the first anime feature to win an Academy Award in 2001, followed by The Boy and The Heron in 2024. In recent years, other Studio Ghibli productions and anime films have also contended for the entertainment industry's most coveted award, with some close to winning.

Inspired by the changing Japanese landscape after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, “A New Dawn” unwinds inside an inactive fireworks factory that is about to go into administrative action. For the past four years, young Keitaro has lived inside the derelict structure, chasing the illusion of a father who vanished years before. Only a scant bit of greenery around the factory remains amongst the sea of panels.

10 Most Rewatchable Anime Films of All Time

While anime most often is released in series form, whether streaming or airing on television, there are plenty of anime films out there for fans seeking a shorter experience. There are even producers dedicated to their creation, like Makoto Shinkai and Hayao Miyazaki. Even non-anime fans can come to love a good Studio Ghibli film.

Some fans think an anime film is good for a single watch before moving on to the next series or film. However, sometimes, an anime film is so good it deserves more than a single watch. Watching the film the first time may be fun, but subsequent views lead to a better understanding of themes. One watch isn't enough.

The Oscars Just Completely Snubbed 'Look Back'
Image
Quick Links 'Look Back' Could Have Been a Contender The Academy Awards Celebrate the Best Cinema... To a Degree

The list of anime movies nominated for an Oscar has been pretty scant. In 2002, Spirited Away broke the mold by being nominated and winning Best Animated Feature. However, since then, the only features to be considered are from Studio Ghibli, with an exception in Mamoru Hosoda's Mirai in 2018. Studio Ghibli is a powerhouse in anime, and they craft thoughtful and visually stunning features worthy of consideration. For anime diehards, the famous animation studio created by Hayao Miyazaki is entry-level and predictable when approaching the medium. With how quick the Oscars are to embrace animated features from other countries, Japanese anime seems often overlooked.

Kiyotaka Oshiyama's Look Back, based on the manga by Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto, has impressed fans and has been met with fanfare and critical praise. Its...

Charades Boss Yohann Comte on Why Awards Season Darlings ‘Flow,’ ‘Memoir of a Snail’ Could Represent a Sea Change for Independent Animation Distribution
Image
French production and sales company Charades started getting involved in animation several years ago, working with films like Mamoru Hosoda’s “Mirai” (2018) and Jérémy Clapin’s “I Lost My Body” (2019), both of which received Oscar nominations. But with Gints Zilbalodis’ Golden Globe best animated feature winner “Flow” and Adam Elliot’s Annecy Cristal winner “Memoir of a Snail,” 2024 stands out as the company’s most successful year yet when it comes to releasing award-winning and profitable animated features.

Both “Flow” and “Memoir” have been omnipresent during this year’s awards season and look like favorites to score Oscar nominations. That would be impressive in any year, but even more so in one in which Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks all released box office hits that have already won the hearts of audiences around the world.

Allu Arjun Faces Unnecessary Trolls (Photo Credit – Facebook)

Allu Arjun is riding high on the success of Pushpa 2. However, he unexpectedly faced criticism because of several slip-ups during the film’s promotional events. His recent public appearances have sparked discussions among fans and media.

At a Pushpa 2 success meet in Delhi, Allu Arjun mistakenly referred to director Sukumar as “Bandi Sukumar Reddy” instead of “Bandreddy Sukumar.” He altered the director’s community name.

This sparked a wave of online trolling, with some speculating about political alignments due to prior support from the Ysrcp during the film’s release. Additionally, at events held in Telugu states, he reportedly misremembered the names of Telangana’s Cm Revanth and Andhra Pradesh’s Cinematography Minister Kandula Durgesh, fueling further backlash.

Animation Is Film Reveals October Dates for L.A.’s Top Toon Festival (Exclusive)
Image
The seventh edition of Animation is Film (Aif), a Los Angeles-based sister event to France’s prestigious Annecy Animation Festival, will run October 18-20 at the Tcl Chinese 6 Theaters in Hollywood this fall.

Launched in 2017, “The Festival embraces the highest aspirations of animation as a cinematic art form on par with live action and is a vocal advocate for filmmakers who push the boundaries of their work to the fullest range of expression that the medium is capable of,” reads the Aif mission statement.

The festival’s executive director, Matt Kaszanek, put it more succinctly during last year’s event: “Animation Is Film is not just the name of our festival; it is its mission.”

Animation is Film fills a gap in the U.S. market, which has no dedicated animation festivals on par with those in Europe, Asia, and Canada. The annual autumn event is also becoming something of an Oscar-season bellwether.

Blackthorne came to Japan to ensure the Portuguese didn't seize the island nation before his homeland England could get a trading foothold. When he arrives, he doesn't speak a word of his new companions' language.

One of the first Japanese words that Blackthorne learns is "Teki" — "Enemy." I remember as I watched the scene, I recognized the word myself. I don't speak Japanese, but I have picked up a few words from watching many different anime series.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Box Office Collection Day 20: Crosses 1 Crore Mark Again!( Photo Credit – IMDb )

It was back to 1 crore+ earning for Hollywood flick Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire as the film brought in 1.10 crore on Wednesday. The film had collected 0.87 crore the day earlier and grew a bit. Two factor played a role in this. Firstly it was Ramanavami partial holiday and secondly, it’s also a set film and the competition is hardly coming into play.

The film has now collected 88.74 crores and will come quite close to 90 crores mark today. Then there would be growth over the weekend and though it would be tough for the film to enter the 100 Crore Club by end of next week, it will certainly happen well within the weekend that follows.

Thankfully this holdover release had been liked by the audience due to which exhibitors have something to play.
