In 1989, Director David Fincher received a nomination for the MTV Video Music Award for Best Director for this music video as well as Steve Winwood's "Roll With It" and Madonna's "Express Yourself," winning the award for the latter video. Fincher's triple nomination within a single year tied a 1986 record previously set by director Steve Barron. Fincher repeated this feat the following year, making his the only director to do this twice. No filmmaker has repeated a triple nomination since (as of 2017).
