This Movie Made My Eyes Leak!

Beautiful movie that packs the emotion as it slowly unfolds in front of us.

The performances are really touching and delivered honestly without hype.

I just recommend that you watch it.

An additional note. Congratulations to those who decided to shoot this film in black and white. I have long held the view that colour (I do love colour movies) can often be a distraction from detail and that emotion etc can be overlooked. For example if you take colour away from Transformers (and I do like the first 3!) then you may find the lack of story and depth to be exposed as the colourful, shiny bits are removed. With 1985, the absence of colour allows us to see more.

    Special!

    Realistic Emotional Drama

This film is quite good. The movie portrays the struggle with being gay and the family dynamics during the AIDS crisis in 1985, but not with a flashy Hollywood style, but from a realistic and personal side.

A touching, difficult view of very dark times

I walked into this sort of blindly. Not sure what I expected, but I was snowed in and needed something to watch. I swore I was done with films dealing with those horrible, dark times in the 1980's when I lived in NYC and everyone was dying, but there I sat viewing a yet another hopeless life for another young man. All that personal stuff aside, this is well made. It is also well acted especially by the lead, Cory Michael Smith. This is the sad story of a young man leaving his adult life in NYC to return to Texas for Christmas for what he believes to be the last time to see his very religious family. There is nothing surprising here, nothing new. It's exactly what one would expect it to be, but the love some of these characters have for each other is moving. Virginia Madsen plays the young man's mother with such delicacy, which is not unusual for this excellent actress. I was also impressed by Jamie Chung as his lifelong friend/love interest and Aidan Langford as his little brother. Michael Chiklis is also good as the father, but it's a hard role to like, though he eventually wins you over ever so slightly. It's interestingly shot in black and white and it's a very good movie if you can deal with the inevitability of the main character's fate. I, for one, have a hard time doing so anymore, but I suppose we should never forget. For some people, it might be a necessity.

It wasn't easy to be gay in Forth Worth in 1985

1985 (2018) was written and directed by Yen Tan. It stars Cory Michael Smith as Adrian, a young gay man who is out of the closet in NYC, but still in the closet in Fort Worth. Adrian is handsome and athletic. He doesn't look or act like the stereotyped version of a gay man.

His parents are working class evangelicals. All they want is for Adrian to marry Carly, the girl friend he left behind. (Jamie Chung, a Korean-American portrays Carly. It's interesting that no one objects to Adrian marrying an Asian-American woman.) Virginia Madsen plays Eileen, Adrian's loving mother. Michael Chiklis portray's Adrian's father Dale, who fulfills the stereotyped image of a tough, blue-collar right-wing guy.

This movie could have been a simple coming-out story, but it isn't. There are complexities within each character, and there are unexpected moments of love and concern.

We saw this film at The Little Theatre, as part of ImageOut, the excellent Rochester LGBT Film Festival. It will work well on the small screen.

1985 carries a weak IMDb rating of 6.8. I think it's better than that.

P.S. In a brilliant piece of programming, ImageOut showed the movie "Buddies" on the same day as it showed 1985. Buddies was produced in 1985. It was the first movie that openly referred to the HIV/AIDS crisis. The year 1985 was a really bad year to be gay.

Beautifully written silent and strong !

Don't read any plot before you watch the film , let you simply walk into his life , fell for him and follow the flows ! And you will be moved and touched by the 1985 !

    • Trivia
When Adrian takes Andrew to the movies, they eventually see A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985). This "Nightmare" became infamous after its initial release due to the homoerotic subtext of the film - protagonist Jesse (played by now openly gay actor Mark Patton) struggles the whole movie with being overwhelmed and manipulated by Freddy Krueger, which has been seen by many scholars and horror fans as how gay people struggle with accepting themselves in less than hospitable places, i.e. how Adrian is struggling with telling his family he's gay or has AIDS or how its suggested Andrew may be gay/bisexual as well. Also, when they're inside the theater watching the movie, the entire audience is made up of men, most of whom look to be discreet couples.
    • Quotes

Adrian Lester: You're gonna have some tough days; days where you feel like everything sucks, and you don't wanna get out of bed; days when you gonna feel like you just don't belong. I've had a lot of those days. And I want you to know; you are not the only one that feels the way you do. There's a whole world out there for someone like you. I promise you are not as different as you think you are. And mom and dad that might not get it; all of your friends might not get it either, and some of them might say some pretty mean and awful things, because they just don't get it. But I get it, and I know that you're gonna learn to be happy... with who you are. And you may need to be at another place to be happy, and you know what? That's okay; that's why I left home. It might seem like the hardest thing to do at first , but it might be the right thing for you to do. And in another time, at another place, you're gonna meet the right people; people that are just like you. People that are just like me. So hang in there, Andrew. Things tend to get a little darker before they get brighter.
