Carême might not be officially renewed for a second season, but the hopes are tied to its reprisal. But why? The historical-political drama revolves around a chef named Antonin Carême, who came from a humble background and became the first celebrity chef.
He rose to fame after his skills, but how can an Apple TV+ drama be so simple? The actual stir lies in when he is used by the politicians as a spy. Moreover, to escape a poverty-ridden life, he volunteers to do the deed, which further makes the drama interesting and new for the viewers. But, with a lot at stake, such as viewership, liking, and production decisions, will the show be revived for Season 2 or not?

The best movies about cooking have some familiar tropes. The food has to look delicious, the cooking meticulous and artistic, capturing the craft and the dedication. Yet many shows and movies about cooking are also about how the art of cooking is hell, and everyone who works in a kitchen goes through trenches night after night, with enough stress to destroy just about anyone. It's part of what makes the best episodes of "The Bear" so compelling, along with the family drama, funny moments, and enough nail-bitingly stressful situations to eliminate any hunger that could come up from watching the delicious food in the show.
Whether you're savoring every new episode of "The Bear" for as long as you can or binge-watching it as quick as possible, eventually you'll go through kitchen drama withdrawal, and that's when you need to watch the best new AppleTV+ show of the year: "Carême.

In recent years, historical and period dramas have taken up significant space on television and streaming, including those with a more fantastical edge than archival accuracy. Shows like Carême and The Crown that stylistically merge documented notes from the past with a flair for histrionics have quickly racked up a steady viewership count alongside proper ratings.
On the other hand, there exist shows like Band of Brothers and Chernobyl that leave no space for argument regarding their factual accuracy and realism. Among such heavyhitters lies Turn: Washington’s Spies – a mostly forgotten drama hidden within the folds of history that has all the love of its niche fan base but none of the access offered by modern streaming.

Taking a different turn from the usual series on the streaming platform, Carême blends food, s*x, and politics set in the Napoleonic era. Despite not having many promotions, Carême holds a 95% critic score rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The show is based on Cooking for Kings: The Life of Antonin Carême, The First Celebrity Chef by Ian Kelly. French President Emmanuel Macron wasn’t kidding when he told Variety the country would fight to get “Emily in Paris” back to France after the hit Netflix show’s Roman escapade.
Netflix boss Ted Sarandos was one of the few top U.S. players invited by Macron to take part in the eighth edition of Choose France, a summit dedicated to promoting the country’s attractiveness to draw investments. Held on May 19 at Versailles, the event marked the first time Choose France included a focus on cinema and audiovisual.
While the summit’s cultural program was initiated well before U.S. President Trump proposed a 100% tariff on foreign films amid rising tensions between French and U.S. guilds, it turned out to be an auspicious timing for a transatlantic meeting. Since little is known about Trump’s plan so far, attendees continued to focus on increasing France’s piece of the production pie.

Carême might not be the only great chef we should praise.
Based on Ian Kelly’s Cooking for Kings: The Life of Antonin Carême, The First Celebrity Chef, Carême is a French-language historical drama that takes the audience into the life of the world’s first celebrity chef. Already five episodes in, the series has just started to pick up its pace and become interesting and intriguing for the viewers.
Carême has received a positive response from critics and audiences upon release, as the world of food mixed with politics, historical elements, revenge, and, since it’s French, a little bit about s*x seems captivating. However, things don’t always land at the sweet spot, but close.

Carême on Apple TV+ has just premiered, but it's already proven it's not just a story about the beauty and taste of food. The tale is an intriguing recipe that mixes culinary vision, political power, and spying when your family's life is at stake. It's truly amazing to see all of these, ahem, ingredients come together. I personally love historical dramas, so that element is a great addition as well.
The one and only Antonin Carême has proved how talented he is in the kitchen in just the past two episodes, and yet he may still have some more to learn. Apple TV+ has released another binge-watchable show, Carême, this time in the French language. Based on the book Cooking for Kings: The Life of Antonin Carême, The First Celebrity Chef, the show’s story explores a fictionalized version of historical chef Antonin Carême.
Benjamin Voisin plays the expert baker who hesitantly becomes part of Napoleon’s consulate as a spy. He initially turns down the job at Tulleries. However, Napoleon holds his father captive, and he seeks help from the nobleman Talleyrand, who has revolutionary tendencies.
Martin Bourboulon’s series is a visual treat, however, it fails to go all the way to become the promised groundbreaking period drama. Food and s*x are the driving force behind this show. When all of that is presented in a visually appealing manner, a show lacking real substance can easily earn a spot on many people’s must-watch lists without much effort.

In a world where shows like Bridgerton serve romance with a side of pop songs and steamy stares, it’s easy to forget what true emotional depth looks like in period drama.
But back in 1993, Martin Scorsese gave us The Age of Innocence, a love story set in 1870s New York that feels more intense than anything we’re getting from today’s streaming hits.
It’s stylish, yes, (like c’mon it has to be the 1870s NY) but also sharp, quiet, and emotionally devastating. Where modern shows dress up drama in glitter, Scorsese gave us real heartbreak under the velvet and lace. And he did it all without breaking a sweat or a corset.
Why do modern period romances feel so empty next to this 1993 classic?
Netflix’s Bridgerton may look like the best chance of period drama romance on TV people will get these days, but it...

As always, Apple TV+ continues to prove that its series are some of the best out there compared to other streaming platforms. While they don’t always offer heaps of shows like other streaming services, they never fail to deliver top-notch viewing experiences. With the season finale of its hit show, Severance, now in the bag, subscribers are undoubtedly looking for something else to sink their teeth into.
Luckily, Apple TV+ has quite a few worthy replacements to tide viewers over for the time being. That being said, it doesn’t look like April offers anything quite as thrilling or unique as the bedrock show. Nevertheless, there’s a lot for audiences to enjoy. With plenty of drama and a bit of humor, the platform’s latest shows scheduled to arrive next month are definitely ones that viewers won’t want to miss.

International series do not lack scale and ambition.
The lineup of this year’s Series Mania, the TV festival and industry meet that runs through March 28 in Lille, France, includes historic epics like Joe Wright’s rise-to-fascism biography Mussolini: Son of The Century, real-life action thriller Kabul, which traces the fall of Afghan capital to the Taliban in 2021, and Liongate’s spy drama The German, from the creators of Fauda and Tehran, about Holocaust survivors recruited to track down Nazi war criminals.
Add to that the screenings at the festival’s upfront event, held Monday, March 24, where top-tier buyers get a sneak peek at upcoming international series. The 10 featured upfront shows include German fantasy epic War of the Kingdoms, Korean sci-fi series S Line and Swiss thriller The Deal, starring The Broken Circle Breakdown star Veerle Baetens as a diplomat tasked with brokering last-chance nuclear negotiations between the U.S.

Bowing March 21 with Apple TV+’s “Carême,” an ambitious sex-sluiced French riposte to “Bridgerton,” 2025’s Series Mania lifted off with a spring in its step, standing tall for one more year as Europe’s premier TV festival.
An extraordinarily long line on Saturday, encircling Lille’s major Nouveau Siècle theater for Joe Wright’s “M: Son of the Century” shows how much Series Mania’s home city in north-east France has taken the festival to its heart.
Europe’s industry has embraced Series Mania for many years as a co-production forum. “I spend my life on this circuit going from town to town and to forums and there’s me and some other guys,” says Steve Matthews, Banijay Entertainment’s head of scripted, creative. “Series Mania last year I couldn’t get a seat in the damn room. And that’s at a forum of young writers pitching projects: standing room only.
