In the footsteps of Moses and the Exodus

"Moses: Signs, Sacraments, and Salvation" is one of 10 documentary films in a video series. "The Footprints of God" presents the story of salvation, from Abraham to Augustine with modern visits and film of all the places and sites of the Bible and ancient Church. Author Stephen Ray hosts and narrates these visual tours. He provides historical notes and commentary, with occasional explanations of significant events from Catholic teaching.

These films were produced by St. Joseph Productions and Ignatius Press over 15 years. They tour the lands and places of the Bible, including many out-of-the way, lesser known or little visited locales. The films include ancient historic sites, archaeological sites and digs, old ruins, and shrines and Christian churches. Aerial photography spans the lands and various terrains of the Bible.

In this film, Ray gets down to earth. Barefoot and in the mud with straw he demonstrates the "art" of brick-making that the enslaved Israelites were forced to do under the pharaoh in the Bible. From Giza and the pyramids, Ray wades into the Nile River with a floating basked to show how Moses was found in the reeds and adopted by the Egyptian princess. He travels to the mountain of God in the desert near Midia, where, after 40 years Moses saw God in the burning bush and was chosen to return to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Ray takes us to the Red Sea, and then to Mt. Sinai where Moses received the Ten Commandments and the people rebelled and worshipped a golden calf.

Ray follows the footsteps of Moses in the rest of the Exodus story. He stops at the place where Moses stuck the rocks at God's command, and water gushed forth for the people to drink. Then, we visit the place where the Israelites scouted the land, and found its great produce but feared the people and didn't trust the Lord to deliver them up. So, for 40 more years they roamed the desert until all of the rebellious people had died. The film ends at the Jordan heights that overlook the promised land, where Moses turned over the leadership of the people to Joshua, because Moses was not allowed to enter the promised land.

Whether or not one has been to the Holy Land or any of the places in the Bible, this film and series should be interesting to people of varied interests. The films will have meaning for many. Christians, Bible scholars, those interested in archaeology and geology, people who like history, and all who like to travel should enjoy this series.
