This is a good documentary about one of the best bands to emerge from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene of early 80s'. That's already too much explanation because everybody should know who Saxon are. But if you still don't, please do yourself a favor and watch this movie.
It's a very well constructed film that moves chronologically from the beginning towards present day (that being 2010 when the film was released). I like how most of their albums are discussed or at least shortly mentioned. That kind of approach feels good to my music nerd brains.
The film mostly consists of the band members and other people talking. When I first watched it some years ago I was left with an impression that it was too much just talking. Maybe I expected some tour hassle that is often featured in this kind of band history films. But now when I watched it again I was entirely satisfied. Saxon is a no-nonsense band that focuses on what's important and I get the feeling that the style of the documentary also compliments their muical style. No gimmicks or tricks, just telling the stories behind the music. And of course there are a lot of short concert clips of the songs that are discussed.
The amount of people interviewed is pretty good. Along with the current musicians some past members are involved, and also some other people such as Lemmy have something to say, and of course the motörmouth Lars Ulrich because he's everywhere. I don't have any complaints other than maybe it was a little bit too heavy on talking only...but as the topics talked were interesting it's ok. Just don't expect an adventurous film like Iron Maiden's "Flight 666". Both are great bands but these are completely different style documentaries.
There are also some bonus features like more concert footage on the disc. I haven't watched those bonus materials yet but will in the future.
