Ruby Rose, who faced Keanu Reeves' titular assassin in John Wick: Chapter 2, opens up about her interest in Ares' backstory. Rose portrayed Ares, Santino D'Antonio's personal bodyguard who faces John Wick in the second installment, but like all the other assassins who try to hunt down John, Ares doesn't survive the fight. After her time in the John Wick franchise, Rose appeared in many films, including The Meg and The Doorman. The actor has a new action thriller titled Dirty Angels, due to come out on December 13.
While promoting the new Martin Campbell movie about an all-female commando unit fighting terrorists in Afghanistan, Rose spoke to Screen Rant's own Liam Crowley about her thoughts on exploring Ares further in the John Wick universe. The actor admits that she "would love" to explore her character deeper, and that she'd personally like to see Ares' backstory. Check out what she...

The Price We Pay is directed by Ryuhei Kitamura, from a script written by Christopher Jolley, and stars Gigi Zumbado, Stephen Dorff, Emile Hirsch, Vernon Wells, Erika Ervin, and Tanner Zagarino; and follows a group of robbers and their hostage finding out that the farmhouse they’ve taken refuge in is far from the haven they thought it would be, forcing them to survive the owners’ onslaught…
Kitamura once again returns to the well of threadbare activities in secluded locations. This time, Jolley takes the helmer’s film to a farmhouse, and that’s right about where the plot developments end. It’s a simple and heavily disappointing choice to focus on nothing. After a prologue showing a prostitute being dumped at a quiet gas station and kidnapped by an as-of-yet-unseen figure,...

Seinfeld had a habit of making references to famous films -- sometimes organic to the story, sometimes completely random and sometimes even from movies that the show's cast had appeared in. Newman parodied Wayne Knight's scenes from Oliver Stone’s JFK in Season 3, Episode 17, "The Boyfriend." The infamous leg crossing interrogation scene from Basic Instinct was referenced in Season 8, Episode 5, "The Package". Wilfred Brimley lectured Kramer with his iconic monologue from Absence of Malice in Season 9, Episode 5, "The Junk Mail."
The one thing all of these references had in common is that they were fun. There were goofy sequences as well as carefully crafted shot-for-shot reenactments. Seinfeld referenced films from every decade between the 1930s and 1990s, sometimes skipping decades in the same episode. Season 9, Episode 17, "The Bookstore" had Kramer doing a bit from 1933's Marx Brothers classic Duck Soup and Uncle Leo parodying Robert De Niro's prison sequence from 1991's Cape Fear.

Natalie Terrazzino in Hunt Her, Kill Her. Courtesy of Welcome Villian Films
There have been dozens of films in which an innocent woman is forced to summon previously untapped toughness and resourcefulness to fend off a group of assailants. An early example is a blind Audrey Hepburn in Wait Until Dark whose home is invaded by thugs mistakenly thinking some drugs were stashed there. Among the grittier, bloodier explorations of the premise is 1978’s I Spit On Your Grave, which spawned a slew of sequels and imitators including its next-generation return bout, I Spit On Your Grave: DÉJÀ Vu, in 2019.
In Hunt Her, Kill Her, Natalie Terrazzino plays a woman on her first night as the janitor in a large industrial facility. She’s worried about her sick child left in the care of a neighbor. She starts hearing sounds that are troubling, since she’s supposed to be...

Amazon Studios, La Unión de los Ríos, Kenya Films and Infinity Hill have teamed to produce Argentina’s first Amazon Original film, Santiago Mitre’s “Argentina, 1985,” which looks set to become a banner Argentine big fest title and release in 2022.
Headlining arguably the foremost Argentine stars of their generations – Ricardo Darín and Peter Lanzani (“The Clan”) – the feature film has just started shooting in Argentina.
It focuses on an extraordinary but real life event of which Argentineans can feel proud: the true story of how a public prosector, Julio Strassera, a young lawyer, Luis Morena Ocampo, and their inexperienced legal team dared to prosecute the heads of Argentina’s bloody military dictatorship in a battle against odds and a race against time, braving bomb and death threats.
The so-called Trial of the Juntas is described as the biggest prosecution process for war crimes since the 1946 Nuremberg Trails after WWII.

Rose has the poise to carry this action movie about an alpha mama collecting money from narcotics nasties, but it’s cartoonish
With the superhero’s gentrification of the blockbuster business, there is little space any more for big-budget original action movies. So up-and-comers such as Ruby Rose – seen earlier this year opposite Jean Reno in The Doorman – are forced to slug it out in the B-movie arena, from where there’s no guarantee they’ll ever emerge into stardom. Rose looks great – her androgynous poise reminiscent of the young Angelina Jolie – and does a capable job carrying Vanquish. But you wonder if this noir-filtered, John Wick-apeing thriller is a little too stripped-back for its own good to advance her career.

Here we have a numbingly empty feature that exhibits a blend of Die Hard and John Wick with the most exhausting banality. Yes, the production values are fine and the performances are competent, but there’s not a shred of wit or passion. Reno, I suspect, had an extension to pay for when he agreed to this.
Our focaliser is Ali (Ruby Rose), a paramilitary guard who’s traumatised by a job that goes fatally awry. Upon returningto New York, a friend finds her work as a doorman in a fancy apartment building. He doesn’t mention that her estranged brother Jon (Rupert Evans), a British professor, lives there with his two children. Just as Ali begins to rekindle, Victor Dubois (Jean Reno) storms the building with a gang of thugs, demanding to know where his paintings are.
Reno is an enjoyable French baddie for about five minutes or so,...

“After We Collided” is the big winner this week. It is #1 at both Apple TV and Google Play, and #2 at FandangoNow (where its $6.99 price on the revenue-based chart put it at a disadvantage). Its Friday debut precluded Spectrum.
This is the sequel to 2019 college romance “After,” which grossed $12 million domestic and $57 million overseas. “After We Collided” also had a theatrical release this weekend, but earned only $420,000 at theaters willing to play day and date. This opened weeks ago in international theaters (including Canada), where it’s earned over $46 million. It’s a sign of how foreign results are dwarfing domestic ones (albeit with minimal competition).
Briarcliff opted to go at a non-premium VOD price and this clicked right away. “After” cost $14 million; figure this is more. It’s recouped a nice share of its cost overseas, and now can collect 70 percent of its domestic VOD from what appears to be a strong response.

In our Q&a series Last Call, we get down to the bottom of every last thing with some of our favorite celebs - from the last thing they texted to the last thing they binge-watched. This week, actress Ruby Rose takes our call.
Ruby Rose rose to fame with her role on Netflix's Orange Is the New Black, and has been booked and busy ever since. As of late, the 34-year-old actress has turned her attention to action films like XXX: Return of Xander Cage and John Wick: Chapter 2, but she did show her funny (and musical) side with her role in Pitch Perfect 3. Her latest film,
The Doorman
, goes back to her action roots as she plays a former Marine turned doorman who will stop at nothing to protect the residents in her building when mercenaries show up to steal priceless art from the building's walls.

After selling off a half-dozen titles to Amazon and Netflix, “Love and Monsters” is one of the few Paramount Pictures titles to receive a 2020 theatrical release. It’s not much of a release — 387 theaters this weekend, for $255,000 — but its PVOD performance (at $19.99) may suggest why Paramount chose to hold on to it.
Scheduled pre-covid for theatrical release April 17, “Love and Monsters” (original title: “Monster Problems”) is no. 1 at both Apple TV and FandangoNow. Budgeted at $30 million, this adventure comedy led by”Maze Runner” and “Teen Wolf” star Dylan O’Brien, is not unlike “Zombieland” in its use of a young hero fighting off monsters in a dystopian society.
It’s the only new PVOD title this week, so it’s unsurprising to see its high placement at FandangoNow, which ranks its charts by revenue. Still, it beat out “Mulan,” which costs $29.99. More impressive: It leads at Apple TV, which ranks by number of transactions,...

Years ago, when DVD was in its infancy, I used to frequent a few DVD forums where people would discuss not only this new format but also have in-depth discussions about films that never made it to these shores – oftentimes due to said films getting fancy limited edition box set release; and sometimes (cough) bootleg (cough) discs of certain, more exploitative, films would be passed between members.
That’s how I discovered Versus, the third film from director Ryûhei Kitamura – as a bootleg Dvdr. A bootleg without subtitles, without any information beyond the sheer enthusiasm other people had for the film. And I was blown away. Versus‘ reputation kept growing, eventually getting a legitimate UK DVD release from the now-defunct Tartan Films.

The range of pricing in VOD play has never been so clear. Two films at the extreme ranges of budget and premium stand out among new releases. At $3.99, which represents rock-bottom for a new film, Dinesh D’Souza’s latest right-wing polemic “Trump Card” is #1 at both Apple TV and Google Play, charts that rank by transaction volume.
At the same time, Disney’s “Mulan” is now available on platforms beyond Disney+ for $29.99, and is #1 at the revenue-based FandangoNow. “Ava” also continues its successful showings, with first place at Spectrum.
“Trump Card” is pitched as an expose of “socialism, corruption, and the deep state,” and clearly aimed at Election Day interest. In his past films (which received theatrical release), D’Souza preferred to specifically demonize Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. This time, the target is far broader than the tougher-to-hate Joe Biden. It placed #2 at FandangoNow, where its low price hurts its ranking.

After making a name for himself in his native France, particularly with his collaborations with action director Luc Besson, actor Jean Reno crossed the Atlantic to become a highly-sought character performer in big budget Hollywood fare. Though he broke the ice with American audiences with the cult classic Le Femme Nikita (1991), Reno made his greatest impression on U.S. shores playing a reluctant hit man training a young girl (Natalie Portman) in the strangely heartwarming thriller The Prfessional (1994). Ever since, Reno made his mark playing coolly ambiguous and frighteningly cunning characters who more often than not reveal themselves to be all-too-human. Reno was perhaps most memorable in action thrillers like Ronin (1998) and The Da Vinci Code (2006). Despite not possessing a marquee name,

Lionsgate has revealed a trailer for The Doorman. This is a new action/thriller led by Ruby Rose, Jean Reno. Ryuhei Kitamura directs what is described by the studio as a "punishing action-thriller." Based on what we can see from the trailer, that appears to be an accurate description.
The trailer opens up with an explosion-filled action scene that sees bullets, and Ruby Rose, fly. This helps set up her character, an ex-soldier, who is at the center of the tale. After leaving the armed forces, she then finds herself a quiet yet steady job working at an apartment building. All seems well. However, a gang of armed thugs shows up with criminal intent, which throws a wrench in the gears. Rose's character ends up on the wrong side of this group, ultimately duking it out with them. Punches (and bullets) fly, the body count rises and Rose even gets a one-liner in.

In a premise that reminds me (favorably) of Under Siege, Ruby Rose stars in The Doorman as an ex-Marine who has returned to the U.S. and takes a job as a doorman at a posh hotel. Perhaps suffering from Ptsd, she is looking for a little peace and quiet, which she doesn't find in a weekend from hell when "a group of art thieves and their ruthless leader (Jean Reno)" descend upon the high-rise building, little suspecting that the new doorman is ready to unleash her own kind of hell upon them. Check out the snappy trailer below. Kitamura Ryûhei, which means bad things will be happening to bad things. And things will explode, and weapons will most definitely be fired, early and...

"You should walk away now and if you don't? I will take you to hell." Lionsgate has released an official trailer for an action movie titled The Doorman, set in New York City. This is the latest feature form Japanese filmmaker Ryûhei Kitamura and it's debuting on VOD this October. Ruby Rose stars in this as a soldier who returns from combat and befriends a family in New York. When a group of thieves, lead by Jean Reno, breaks into their expensive home, she takes the lead and fights back. As Erik Davis pointed out: "this feels like Ruby Rose's Die Hard." The cast includes Louis Mandylor, Rupert Evans, Aksel Hennie, and David Sakurai. If this was really as good as Die Hard, I think we'd have heard more about it by now. ...
