Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier on Post-Pandemic Reinvention, Development Shifts and Studio Plans
Image
While the world was in lockdown for the last 14 months, Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier says the network took a close look at its approach to storytelling and gave a great deal of thought to what audiences would want after this very tough past year.

“We talked a lot about themes that would be resonant as the world came out of the pandemic,” Collier told Variety. “As you can imagine, it doesn’t take an enormous leap of faith to suggest that people are going to be thinking a lot about what it means to reinvent themselves, what it means to be heard, given some of the issues we’ve all been dealing with on top of the pandemic, [and] what it means to have a voice in society. Frankly, one of the big things you’ll see in both our scripted and unscripted is what it means to have a second chance.

Country Music Drama ‘Monarch’ Gets Two-Night Launch Beginning Post-nfc Championship Game On Fox
Image
Fox’s new midseason country music drama series Monarch will launch with a two-night premiere event, beginning Sunday January 30 following the NFC Championship Game, and continuing Tuesday, February 1.

Created by Melissa London Hilfers, Monarch is described as a Texas-sized, multigenerational musical drama about America’s first family of country music. The Romans are fiercely talented, but while their name is synonymous with honesty, the very foundation of their success is a lie. When their reign as country royalty is put in jeopardy, Nicky Roman, the heir to the crown, already battling an industry stacked against her, will stop at nothing to protect her family’s legacy.

The hour-long drama comes out of the network’s script-to-series model that utilizes a writers room. It marks the first live-action scripted series fully owned by Fox, since the sale of 20th Television to Disney.

Fox Fall Schedule Reveals Fate of The Resident, 9-1-1, & More
Angela Bassett, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Kenneth Choi, Peter Krause, Aisha Hinds, Oliver Stark, and Ryan Guzman in 9-1-1 (2018)
While many networks have been forthcoming with decisions for the bulk of their scripted series, Fox has been holding its cards close to its chest.

The network has now announced that 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Lone Star and The Resident will be a part of its 2021-22 TV schedule.

9-1-1 has been renewed for Season 5, Lone Star for Season 3, and The Resident for Season 5.

Of those shows, the 9-1-1 franchise was a lock to remain a part of the network's lineup next season.

While holding up very well, the Resident was on the bubble due to the limited slots on the network.

Both 9-1-1 and The Resident will be keeping their current slots in the fall, while Lone Star has been shifted to midseason.

Mondays this fall will consist of 9-1-1 and the Scott Foley-Teri Polo dramedy, The Big Leap.

It's certainly a different pairing, but given that 9-...

Fox 2021 Fall Schedule Leans on ‘9-1-1,’ ‘Resident,’ ‘Masked Singer’ to Launch New Series
Image
Fox unveiled its 2021 fall schedule as part of its upfront presentation, with the network announcing renewals for a number of its shows.

Both “9-1-1” and “9-1-1: Lone Star” were renewed, as was the medical drama “The Resident.” “9-1-1” will lead off Fox Monday’s this fall, while “Lone Star” is being held for midseason. “The Resident” is set to kick off Tuesdays for network in the 8 p.m. slot. All three shows debuted at midseason during the 2020-2021 broadcast season. In addition, animated comedy “The Great North” has been renewed for Season 3 ahead of the Season 2 premiere.

“9-1-1” will serve as the lead in to the new Fox dramedy series “The Big Leap.” Inspired by the U.K. docuseries “Big Ballet,” the show is about a group of diverse, down-on-their-luck characters attempting to change their lives by participating in a potentially life-ruining reality dance show that builds to a live production of “Swan Lake.

The news was made as part of Fox’s upfront presentation for the 2021-2022 broadcast season. Season 5 of “The Resident” will bow in the fall, while Season 4 had aired at midseason.

Season 4 of “The Resident” jumped forward to a point in time when the Covid-19 pandemic has come and gone. The series follows a group of doctors at Chastain Memorial Hospital, as they face personal and professional challenges on a daily basis. It stars Matt Czuchry, Emily VanCamp, Bruce Greenwood, Manish Dayal, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Jessica Lucas, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Jane Leeves, and Morris Chestnut.

“The Resident” is produced by 20th Television. The series’ executive producers include Todd Harthan, Andrew Chapman, Peter Elkoff, Amy Holden Jones, Rob Corn, Antoine Fuqua and Oly Obst.

Fox Fall Schedule: Monday’s ‘911’ Block Broken Up as ‘Lone Star’ Moves to Midseason
Angela Bassett, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Kenneth Choi, Peter Krause, Aisha Hinds, Oliver Stark, and Ryan Guzman in 9-1-1 (2018)
Fox announced its fall schedule Monday, revealing that “9-1-1” universe fans will no longer be enjoying the shows back to back in the first half of the 2021-22 season, as spinoff “9-1-1: Lone Star” has been pushed to midseason.

Mondays this fall will still be anchored by “9-1-1” at 8 p.m., but will lead into the new Scott Foley-led drama “The Big Leap” in the 9 o’clock slot. However, that freshman series will wrap by midseason, when “Lone Star” will take over the “9-1-1” slot. Then the “9-1-1” series will be reunited, airing back to back once more, come March.

Fox’s Tuesdays are also seeing a change in pairings, following the recent cancellation of “Prodigal Son.” The now-renewed “The Resident” will keep its 8 o’clock hour, with the first season of Lee Daniels’ drama “Our Kind of People” closing primetime from 9-10.

Image
After months of development, production and fine-tuning, it’s decision time for dozens of broadcast pilots hopeful of getting the greenlight to series for the 2021-2022 TV season.

As the major studios rack up series orders over the coming week of network upfront presentations, it’s time to tally the wins and losses. The clear theme of the series orders unveiled to date are franchises, built-in IP and procedural dramas in a year when the total volume of development was down significantly due to pandemic-related disruptions.

Here’s a breakdown by conglomerate and studio imprint of new comedy, drama and unscripted series orders to date, to be updated regularly as broadcast, cable and streaming programming executives tout their wares in the coming days.

This year, virtual programming presentations will be held May 17-19 in lieu of the traditional razzle-dazzle mounted at Radio City Music Hall, Carnegie Hall and other New York City venues.

Fox Orders ‘Accused’ Drama Series From Howard Gordon, Alex Gansa & David Shore Based On UK Format
Image
Fox has given a straight-to-series order to anthology drama Accused, based on the International Emmy-winning British series. The project comes from key creative auspices behind Fox’s two biggest drama series of the last two decades, 24 executive producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa and House creator/executive producer David Shore. Sony Pictures TV, where Gordon & Gansa as well as Shore are under overall deals, will co-produce with Fox Entertainment.

While Accused is being picked up on the eve of Fox’s 2021-22 Upfront presentation, the series is for the 2022-23 season.

This marks the first series order for Gordon and Gansa since they launched a Sony TV-based production company in 2019 with former CBS Entertainment chief Glenn Geller as President. It comes on the heels of Shore, creator, executive producer and showrunner of Sony TV’s hit ABC drama series The Good Doctor, signing a new four-year deal with the studio.

Fox Orders Drama Series ‘Accused’ From ‘House’ Creator, ‘Homeland’ Duo
Image
Fox has given a straight-to-series orders to a drama series that hails from David Shore, Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, Variety has learned.

The series, titled “Accused,” is based on the BBC series of the same name that aired from 2010-2012. The Fox version is slated to debut during the 2022-2023 broadcast season.

“We take great pride in Fox’s legacy of bold risk taking and inventive storytelling,” said Charlie Collier, CEO of Fox Entertainment. “Howard, Alex and David are an important part of that history and working with them on ‘Accused’ takes us back to our roots, literally. They are tremendous artists responsible for some of the most important and beloved series ever on television, and it’s a joy to once again bet on their creative brilliance.”

“Accused” is a crime anthology where each episode opens in a courtroom on the accused without knowing their crime or how they ended up on trial.

Michael Sheen and Tom Payne in Prodigal Son (2019)
Prodigal Son Cut at Fox
Michael Sheen and Tom Payne in Prodigal Son (2019)
Can someone start a #SaveProdigalSon campaign, please?

It was only speculation a few days ago as Fox began doling out orders for new shows, but now, our worst fears are coming to fruition.

Prodigal Son has been canceled a week before its second season finale, now the series finale.

Fans of the show know what a mistake this is, but outlets report that the ratings didn't justify a third season.

So, while I'd like to place all of the blame at Fox's feet, ratings do still matter, and waiting for an entire season to air before watching great television doesn't do anybody any favors -- least of all, the shows themselves.

Tom Payne's Malcolm Bright has been just that -- a bright spot on what can feel like a very blase broadcast special these days.

The son of the notorious serial killer known as The Surgeon aka Dr. Martin...

‘Prodigal Son’ Canceled By Fox After 2 Seasons
Image
Fox has opted not to renew drama Prodigal Son for a third season. It is unclear yet whether leading studio Warner Bros TV would be shopping the series elsewhere. Sibling streamer HBO Max, which has previous seasons of Prodigal Son, would be a logical destination for the serialized serial killer drama.

Sophomore Prodigal Son, co-produced by Fox Entertainment, was a true bubble show. It was the last Fox drama to get a renewal last year, a move that didn’t come until after the upfronts, and it came down to the wire again for the series. It was liked creatively at the network, and there was a will to try and find a path to bring the series back, with various scenarios explored.

Its linear ratings were pretty modest — Prodigal Son was the lowest-rated among the current Fox drama series — but it has been doing well in digital viewing. The remaining three Fox drama series,...

Fox had great success in the ratings with Empire, a drama series about a family in the hip hop music business. Now, the network has ordered a country music drama for the upcoming 2021-22 television season.

‘Blood Relative’ & ‘Goonies’ Film Reenactment Drama Pilots Not Going Forward At Fox
Image
Fox has made its new drama series pickup decisions for the 2021-21 season, going with two projects that came through the network’s recently adopted straight-to-series development model involving the opening of a writers room, Our Kind of People and Monarch, and two 2020 pilots whose production had been pushed by the pandemic, The Big Leap and The Cleaning Lady.

That leaves two other 2020 hourlong pilots, Blood Relative and The Goonies-themed Film Reenactment Project. Both are getting a pass.

As Deadline reported earlier this week, The Film Reenactment Project — previously known as Untitled The Goonies Reenactment Project, about a woman who helps three students who are making a shot-for-shot remake of The Goonies — played a little too young for Fox.

Network has also decided against “Blood Relative” pilot

Fox has decided not to move forward with two drama pilots, “Blood Relative” and an untitled drama that was to follow three kids as they tried to make a shot-for-shot remake of Steven Spielberg’s “The Goonies.”

“Blood Relative” was to star Melissa Leo as Louise Kelly, a genetic genealogist who applies her talents to crime scene forensics. Tate Donovan and Tyrone Marshall Brown were also set to star.

The “Goonies” re-enactment series did not have title but was described as such: “After failing to make it in New York and carrying a heavy secret with her, Stella Cooper returns to her distressed automotive hometown to substitute teach. She finds inspiration, hope, and...

Fox has ordered yet another new drama for the 2021-22 broadcast season, and we're beginning to get a little antsy about some of our favorite shows.

Fox is getting further into the country music scene. The network has handed a series order to Monarch, formerly known as the Untitled Country Music Dynasty drama, from Melissa London Hilfers.

Hilfers created the series, which I hear is getting a 12-episode order, and will write and exec produce, while Instinct creator and Royal Pains exec producer Michael Rauch, who supervised the writers room for the oroject, will act as showrunner and exec producer. Gail Berman and Hend Baghdady also exec produce alongside Sandbox Entertainment’s Jason Owen, a leading country music manager who represents the likes of Faith Hill, Little Big Town and Kacey Musgraves. Some of Owen’s clients and friends are expected to be appearing and performing on the show.

The hour-long project comes out of the network’s script-to-series model that utilizes a writers room, the same one that birthed Karin Gist and Lee Daniels’ Our Kind of People.

The movie was delayed to 2021, and the studio has been slow to release a trailer to keep fans satisfied during the long wait. Now, a few seconds of footage screened during Ccxp has provided us with the first video glimpse of Godzilla vs. Kong.

In the clip, we see Godzilla swimming at full speed underwater as he opens his massive jaws in a show of intimidation. The scene cuts to Kong also roaring in defiance, while a giant metal chain appears to be locked around the ape's neck. It should be noted that both Godzilla and Kong do not appear to be in the same scene,...

‘The Villainess’ Filmmaker Byung-gil Jung To Helm ‘Havoc’ With Monarch Media Producing
Image
Exclusive: South Korean filmmaker Byung-gil Jung, who wowed audiences at Cannes 2017 with his femme-led action feature The Villainess, has come aboard to direct the action thriller Havoc, written by Eric Tipton, based on an original idea by Steve Barnett and Daniel Myrick.

Inspired by actual events, Havoc tells the story of a U.S. helicopter crashing on the North Korean side of the Dmz. With tensions between the North and South already on the verge of war, the surviving U.S. Army Reservists must work together to protect a civilian tech-specialist and find their way across the Dmz, without the possibility of U.S. military support. Both Jung and Kim served in the South Korean military, performing several missions with U.S. soldiers, and plan to bring their experiences to Havoc.

Producers include Bernie Goldmann, Monarch principals Barnett and Alan Powell, and Lewis Kim. Monarch principal Vicky L. Patel will executive produce.

La Gorgone (1964)
The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon – Release Date and Trailer
La Gorgone (1964)
The Outer Worlds‘ story continues in Obsidian’s recently revealed Peril on Gorgon Dlc.

“What we wanted to do with the Dlc was dig into some of the lore from the main campaign,” says game director Carrie Patel in an interview with GamesRadar. “There are a few details that come up in the base game and specifically there’s a drug called Adrena-Time. And so we saw the Dlc as an opportunity to dig into Halcyon’s underlying problems. We know it’s a strange place run by the corporations. But how did some of the very specific problems that plagued this colony come to be?”

While Patel stops short of expanding on what that last part means, she does verify that that Dlc picks up after players have “finished the critical path on Monarch.” The Dlc will also take place on an asteroid which Obsidian says will be quite large.

Steve Barnett
Exclusive: The trio of investor-philanthropist Vicky L. Patel, producer Steve Barnett and singer-actor-writer Alan Powell have teamed to launch Monarch Media, a new film and TV production company. The plan is to develop and produce 2-3 feature films a year in all genres and budget levels, as well as make a push into developing TV series and live event/theatrical properties.

Among the first projects in the Monarch pipeline is Deathrow-mance, a film written by Nick Ball and John Niven and based on an original concept from Tommy Wirkola (Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters) and Benedicte Westbye. Monarch optioned the script via its film fund and is now packaging the project, which will be directed by Wirkola.

Deathrow-mance centers on a British media executive who hastily marries an American death row inmate as a loophole to avoid being deported and losing a huge buyout of her company. After new evidence...

Godzilla Vs. Kong Post-Credits Scene Reportedly Teases The Arrival Of [Spoilers]
Godzilla Vs. Kong, the latest installment in Legendary’s MonsterVerse, was originally set to hit theaters in March, but it turns out that even two of cinema’s most iconic monsters aren’t immune from a release date reshuffle. The epic smackdown between the two enduring favorites was recently delayed eight months until November, reportedly due to some poor reactions from early test screenings. In what was surely no coincidence, a series of extensive reshoots for the project were announced shortly after news of the delay broke, and while additional filming on big budget blockbusters is hardly out of the ordinary, the studio have a lot riding on the success of Godzilla Vs. Kong.

We’re only three movies into the MonsterVerse, but already it seems as though the franchise that was only established in 2014 is starting to run out of steam. The critical and commercial response to both Gareth...
