Gerard Butler's Has Fallen Action Series Has A TV Spin-Off Fans Need To Watch
Image
If you are looking for proof as to why Gerard Butler is the undisputed king of modern trash cinema, look no further than the "Has Fallen" franchise. The films -- "Olympus Has Fallen, "London Has Fallen," and "Angel Has Fallen" -- are modern-day throwbacks to the politically incorrect action fare of yesteryear, with Butler's Secret Service agent, Mike Banning, blasting and stabbing his way through terrorists while protecting the President of the United States. A fourth film, "Night Has Fallen," is currently in the works, but the franchise has also expanded into the world of small-screen entertainment with a spin-off set in France.

"Paris Has Fallen" doesn't feature Butler's one-man army, but it's still an entertaining, violent thriller that will appeal to fans of the film saga. The story follows Vincent Taleb (Tewfik Jallab), a protection officer to France's Defense Minister, and Zara Taylor (Ritu Arya), an MI6 agent,...

'How to Train Your Dragon' Just Broke a New Record for Gerard Butler at the Domestic Box Office
Image
Finishing third in the domestic rankings, Universal’s How to Train Your Dragon remake had another flying weekend at the box office, returning another $11 million and finally surpassing the total earned by the 2010 animated original. Not only that, but the movie has moved further up the all-time ranks, surpassing Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling's La La Land, the animated hit Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the beloved Toy Story 2, and more to officially become one of the 250 highest-grossing movies of all time.

Thanks to this continued success, with the film losing out only to Joseph Kosinski's F1 and the debuting Jurassic World Rebirth in the box office rankings last weekend, one of its stars has officially smashed a huge new milestone in his storied Hollywood career. Gerard Butler, who reprises his role as Stoick the Vast in the live-action adaptation, has now seen the record for his highest-grossing...

Image
Gerard Butler has delivered countless action thrillers over the years, like 300, Olympus Has Fallen, Den of Thieves, and more, but one of his more recent hits has become an instant streaming phenomenon. Butler stars alongside Luke Cage veteran Mike Colter in Plane, the 2023 action thriller that follows Brodie Torrance (Butler), a pilot who finds himself in a war zone with Louis Gaspare (Colter) after his plane goes down during a storm. Plane just arrived on Netflix this week, and the film has wasted no time finding success, currently sitting in the third spot on the streamer’s top movies chart with room to climb even more. Plane nearly tripled its modest $25 million budget with $74 million at the box office, and it even earned scores of 79% from critics and 94% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes — “certified fresh” and “verified hot.”

During a 2023 interview with WGN News, Butler described Plane as “a...

Gerard Butler’s 45% Rotten Tomatoes Conspiracy Thriller Is a Global Streaming Sensation After Grossing Less Than $10 Million
Image
Gerard Butler is known for delivering some of the most entertaining action thrillers out there, and one of his more recent films has found tremendous streaming success recently. Butler stars alongside Tom Rhys Harris (Doctor Who) in Kandahar, the 2023 conspiracy thriller following a CIA operative and his translator who flee from special forces in Afghanistan after exposing a covert operation. In the United States, Kandahar is streaming for free on Tubi, but globally, the film is streaming on Netflix, and it’s currently #1 on streaming charts at the time of writing in Thailand and several other countries. Kandahar earned a 42% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but the audience-driven Popcornmeter lands at a much more respectable 82%. It grossed less than $10 million at the box office, and the budget has been reported to be between $30-$70 million.

Gerard Butler’s 93%-Rated Film Is Now On Streaming But It’s Not Netflix
Image
Gerard Butler has been a part of tons of projects over the years, both good and bad, critically and generally acclaimed and panned. Of course, some pieces have been more than just approved by audiences worldwide despite being brutally disapproved by critics. Like his 93%-rated fan-favorite flick from 2019, Angel Has Fallen.

A political action thriller, the movie was deemed rotten by the critics, but the general audience ratings said otherwise, as it seems to have truly captivated them with its action-thriller elements. And now, years after its release more than half a decade ago, the movie is finally out for streaming, but not on the streaming giant Netflix, as one might expect.

John Rambo Origin Film Begins To Take Shape With Sisu Director Jalmari Helander
Image
Millennium Media, the force behind action mainstays such as The Expendables and The Fallen franchise, is charting new territory with the Rambo saga.

Currently making waves at the Cannes Film Festival, the studio is shopping a prequel that will delve into the origins of John Rambo, an origin story that notably will not star Sylvester Stallone in the lead role (though a cameo isn't entirely off the table).

Millennium is financing the project and actively seeking distribution partners at the festival, with production anticipated to begin in October.

This trip into the past follows Millennium's previous franchise installments, Rambo (2008) and Rambo: Last Blood (2019). According to Deadline Hollywood, the film will explore Rambo's intense combat experiences in the Vietnam War, with directorial duties entrusted to Jalmari Helander, the celebrated director of the recent action hit Sisu.

The screenplay is penned by the writing team of Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani, known...

Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning Tracking For Franchise-Best Opening; Plus Popcorn Bucket & New Photos
Image
With a few weeks to go, the first tracking data for Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is out and it seems as though his ace Imf agent Ethan Hunt is gearing up to go out with a bang.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, The Final Reckoning is currently looking at an opening in the $72 million to $88 million range, with box office pundits targeting a $80 million domestic launch over the course of the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend, which would be a franchise-best, topping the $61.2 million three-day launch for Mission: Impossible - Fallout in 2018.

Meanwhile, Disney's Lilo & Stitch is expected to open around $120 million over the four-day holiday, with projections expecting something in the $110 million to $130 million range, so based on these early estimates, it seems like we're in for one of the biggest movie weekends since 2023's Barbenheimer.

If the tracking holds, and if buzz continues...

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning Stars Tom Cruise & Hayley Atwell Tease Brutal -40° Shoot In Svalbard
Image
Paramount Pictures has released another amazing new behind-the-scenes featurette from Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, this time shifting the spotlight away from the stunts and onto one of the franchise's most breathtaking shooting locations: Svalbard, Norway!

If you're wondering what brings our heroes to the Arctic, well, it's probably safe to say it'll have something to do with the missing Sevastopol, which sank at the beginning of the previous film.

Dead Reckoning spoilers ahead, but, as we all know now, the completed key that Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) managed to swipe at the end of that film opens a chamber in the Sevastopol that contains the Entity's source code, allowing it to be destroyed or controlled.

The sub's location has remained a mystery until now, but, it looks like, in the two months between adventures, Hunt and company will have cracked its hidding spot in the Arctic Ocean.

Lionsgate Snaps Up Hot Action Thriller Spec ‘Renegotiate’ From Mark Townend
Image
Exclusive: In a competitive situation, Lionsgate has landed Renegotiate, a high-concept action-thriller spec by Mark Townend, sources tell us.

The film centers on a troubled FBI crisis negotiator who finds himself stuck in a time loop, re-living the events of a bombing and struggling to stop it before time runs out. Think Source Code meets Phone Booth. Ric Roman Waugh and Brendon Boyea will produce for CineMachine, alongside Brian Kavanagh Jones and Fred Berger for Range, with Aj Bourscheid executive producing.

Townend’s deal is remarkable, we’re told, for a writer with no produced credits, particularly given that the script was taken out without any talent attachments. Sources described the outcome as a three-way bidding war that resulted in a mid-six-figure guaranteed fee against a low-seven-figure purchase/bonus. The script was taken out on the first Monday of April, and by Friday of that week, 20 premium production companies were chasing aggressively.

A Working Man, which hit theaters just last month, has now landed on digital streaming. The action thriller is now available to watch at home via premium video on demand, and can be rented or purchased through the likes of AppleTV, Fandango at Home and Prime Video.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning Trailer Drops Tomorrow; Tom Cruise Jumps Into Arctic In New Teaser
Image
During last night's Final Four games on CBS, Paramount Pictures announced that the brand new theatrical trailer for Tom Cruise's highly anticipated Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning - which originally debuted at CinemaCon last week - will be released online Monday!

Whether it'll drop during the National Championship Game or earlier in the day remains to be seen, but we'd wager on the latter since that's generally when the studio tends to launch new footage. We'd then expect a TV spot to debut during the game, directing fans online to check out the full-length trailer.

Plot details remain under wraps, but we learned at CinemaCon that the film will pick up two months after the events of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning, with Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) still seemingly on the run and presumably on the hunt for the sunken Sevastopol.

As per Deadline's footage description, here's some...

Dwayne Johnson's Intense 2013 Crime Thriller Is A Major Hit On Tubi
Image
The Rock is going through a bit of a weird time in his career. Ever since 2022's "Black Adam" underperformed and he pretended it didn't, the good will he'd accrued throughout several decades has been dissipating. The former WWE star, who recently returned to his wrestling roots, has seemed to flounder, and reports of disgusting on-set habits haven't helped in that regard. But "Red One," his Christmas movie for Amazon, seemed to do well and his aforementioned pro-wrestling return might go some way to restoring the public's faith in a man who at one time seemed to be one of the most-liked figures in Hollywood.

Long before any of this played out, however, and even before he became the massive movie star he eventually did, The Rock was starring in some middling action thrillers in his quest to conquer Hollywood. In recent years, we've seen some of these neglected entries in his filmography resurface,...

Jason Statham’s New Action Thriller From 'Angel Has Fallen' Director Gets Filming Update
Image
Action icon Jason Statham continues to fly the flag for crowd-pleasing action movie fare, with the actor and martial artist now joining forces with the perfect director for another tale of a man with a mysterious past who is forced to fight for justice. The action thriller project does not yet have a title, but is now shooting in Enniskerry, Ireland, and will see The Stath working under the direction of Ric Roman Waugh, who is best known for helming the Gerard Butler-led Angel Has Fallen and Greenland.

Enniskerry hosted the Disney sequel Disenchanted back in 2022, but rather than the music and whimsy of that fantastical comedy, Jason Statham will instead tear through the picturesque village as a man who, after saving a girl from drowning, finds himself the target of a local gang. Enniskerry will stand-in for Scotland in the movie, with a shot of Statham posing with...

Gerard Butler at an event for Que justice soit faite (2009)
Image Source: Lionsgate Gerard Butler has firmly established himself as a modern action star, commanding attention with his gripping performances on the big screen. From the raw intensity of the Den of Thieves series to the adrenaline-pumping Has Fallen trilogy—Olympus Has Fallen (2013), London Has Fallen (2016), and Angel Has Fallen (2019)—Butler consistently delivers unforgettable action-packed moments. Adding to his impressive lineup is the 2023 hit Plane. Plane struck a chord with audiences, earning both box office success and a surge in streaming popularity. The film thrusts viewers into a nail-biting scenario: a veteran pilot, forced to make an emergency landing during a violent storm, finds himself and his passengers stranded in a perilous war zone. Butler, from the outset, recognized the film’s potential to resonate, attributing its success to a perfect mix of intense action and deeply human, relatable characters. Season 2 of the Has Fallen series is now confirmed by Canal+
Image
The Has Fallen series, which was spun off of the Gerard Butler movies — Olympia Has Fallen, London Has Fallen and Angel Has Fallen — will be getting a new season as confirmed by Canal+. The debut season, which was titled Paris Has Fallen, brings a lot of what made the movies successful to the show. Our own Alex Maidy says in his review, “Paris Has Fallen mines so much familiar territory covered in the feature films as well as countless other action shows on the small screen, but it does it with three charismatic leads who seem to be having a blast kicking ass through the City of Lights.”

According to Deadline, Canal+ CEO Maxime Saada confirmed the second season of the Has Fallen TV series in a statement made for Canal+’s preliminary full-year 2024 results. Saada said, “Studiocanal‘s first-ever global TV series Paris Has Fallen, based on the successful Has Fallen film franchise,...

Canal+ CEO Maxime Saada today confirmed a second season of the action thriller series, which was spun out of the Has Fallen films, is in production in the UK on a second season. Season 1, Paris Has Fallen, was set in the French capital with some filming taking place in London.

Saada revealed the news in comments prepared for Canal+’s preliminary full-year 2024 results.

“Studiocanal’s first-ever global TV series Paris Has Fallen, based on the successful Has Fallen film franchise, was a smashing success in all Canal+ pay-tv territories, as well as on Amazon Prime in the UK and Hulu in the United States,” he said. “It will naturally be followed by a second season now shooting in the UK.”

No further details were given but Season 1 of the Canal+ original, which sold to the likes of Hulu and Prime Video,...

Gerard Butler's Action Film 'London Has Fallen' Is Better Than Critics Say
Image
Quick Links'London Has Fallen' Pits Critics Against AudiencesThe President Even Gets in on the Action in 'London Has Fallen'

Without question, the Has Fallen movie trilogy written by Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt is one Hollywood franchise that should be analyzed and studied. Starring Gerard Butler as Secret Service agent Mike Banning and Morgan Freeman (in various roles), each of the three movies barely passed their budget in North American box office totals and didn’t receive the best praise from critics. Albeit, the first and third films — 2013’s Olympus Has Fallen and 2019’s Angel Has Fallen — actually lead when it comes to the two aforementioned categories. On the other hand, 2016’s London Has Fallen, which sees Banning escort president Benjamin Asher out of the vice of Islamic terrorists, seems to have taken an even greater misstep.

The second action flick in the series not only stands out...

Jason Statham’s Mutiny has a been given a release date from Lionsgate
Image
Jason Statham’s upcoming film Mutiny has now been given a release date, according to Deadline. Lionsgate has given the new action thriller an opening on January 9, 2026. That weekend is currently not sporting competition from any other films, but it will be following up the opening week of Universal’s M3GAN spin-off Soulm8te, which could be its only formidable challenge at the box office after the popularity of the original M3GAN.

Lionsgate, MadRiver, and Punch Palace are teaming up to release the film in theaters. Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis wrote the screenplay for Mutiny, with principal photography beginning last September in the UK. Statham produces through his newly-founded Punch Palace Productions, with Marc Butan via his MadRiver Pictures studio.

Is 'Den of Thieves 2' a Box Office Success?
Image
Quick Links'Den of Thieves 2: Pantera' Under-Performed at the Box OfficeGerard Butler Has Limited Box-Office Drawing Power'Den of Thieves 2: Pantera' Was Made for Streaming

Gerard Butler seemed to be on the cusp of superstardom approximately 15 years ago, following Butler’s memorable performances in the films Law Abiding Citizen, Olympus Has Fallen, and 300. However, the commercial and critical failure of the 2017 disaster film Geostorm seemed to have a profoundly altering and damaging effect on his career, in which he made the jarring transition from borderline A-list Hollywood star to B-movie action hero, beginning with the 2018 crime film Den of Thieves.

With the possible exception of Secret Service agent Mike Banning from the Has Fallen film series, the role of rule-breaking Los Angeles police detective Nick O’Brien in Den of Thieves provided Butler with the most distinctive and interesting character he’s played over the past decade. While Den of Thieves...

Den Of Thieves 2 Proves Gerard Butler Has Replaced His $523 Million Action Franchise
Image

Den of Thieves franchise director says a third movie has already been pitched
Image
Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is kicking off the year as 2025’s first number-one movie. It’s also Lionsgate’s first box office topper in over a year. The heist film reportedly made a $15.5 million gross on opening weekend. It opened in line with the 2018 original (not adjusted for inflation). It likely would have performed even better were it not for the horrific wildfires currently decimating large parts of Los Angeles. The movie marks Gerard Butler’s strongest opening since Angel Has Fallen back in 2019.

As the first film became a modest hit (which would collect more fans later in its release life) and got a sequel, could a third movie be in the books for this franchise? Christian Gudegast, the writer and director of both the first and second, says so. And this is despite the hardships that come from making these movies. When he spoke to The Hollywood Reporter,...

Gerard Butler's $80M Action Thriller Becomes Streaming Hit
Image
Gerard Butler has long been a staple of the action genre, and it seems as if he's only leaned harder into this area of his career over the last decade or so. After becoming a big name due to movies like Reign of Fire (2002) and 300 (2006), Butler appeared in a handful of exciting action flicks, including RocknRolla (2008), Gamer (2009), and Machine Gun Preacher (2011). It was in 2013, however, that Butler's action hero persona really evolved.

In 2013, Butler starred in Olympus Has Fallen, which could be seen as the start of a new phase of his career. In addition to starring in two sequels to this White House action movie, including London Has Fallen (2016) and Angel Has Fallen (2019), Butler appeared in a mix of action-forward movies that varied quite significantly in quality, including Geostorm (2017), Hunter Killer (2018), Greenland (2020), Copshop (2021), and Plane (2023). There was one 2018 title, however, that really struck a chord with audiences.

Gerard Butler's New Action Movie Breaks a 2-Year Lionsgate Curse
Image
Lionsgate is coming out swinging at the box office with the company's latest action film breaking a 2-year-old curse. The new sequel Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, featuring a returning Gerard Butler, has debuted strong with its theatrical premiere.

Per Deadline, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera has outperformed its expectations by earning $15.5 million in its opening weekend at the domestic box office. This win puts the Den of Thieves sequel as the No. 1 movie, and for Lionsgate, the feat is significant. Seemingly breaking a curse, this marks the company's first film since 2023's The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes to debut at No. 1. It's also Butler's first No. 1 opening since 2019's Angel Has Fallen, which debuted with $21.3 million.

Weekend Box Office: Den of Thieves 2 gives Lionsgate their first number one in over a year

Lionsgate, which had a disastrous 2024 thanks to duds like Borderlands and The Crow, are having a good start to 2025, with Den of Thieves 2: Pantera opening in first place at the box office. With Deadline reporting a $15.5 million gross, it opened in line with the 2018 original (not adjusted for inflation). It likely would have performed even better were it not for the horrific wildfires currently decimating large parts of Los Angeles. The movie marks Gerard Butler’s strongest opening since Angel Has Fallen back in 2019, proving once again that he’s a consistent draw in these meat-and-potatoes action flicks.
