As far as comedy TV shows in the last ten years go, it's hard to find one more beloved than "What We Do in the Shadows." Premiering on FX in 2019, the series was based on the movie of the same name by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement. Yet, as good as some things are, they must inevitably end.
The "What We Do in the Shadows" season 6 finale served as the series finale, with the vampires saying goodbye after more than 60 episodes and over five years on the air. The decision was made before the season started, however, so it's not as though this came as a surprise to any of the creatives involved, nor for any viewers who stay tuned into the news.

Warning! Spoilers for the What We Do In The Shadows finale
The What We Do in the Shadows series finale has left viewers with plenty to ponder, particularly regarding Nandor’s future without Guillermo. FX’s beloved mockumentary series, which first aired in 2019 as a spinoff of Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi's 2014 cult-classic film, follows a group of vampire roommates navigating immortal life in modern-day Staten Island. Known for its absurd humor, endearing characters, and genre-bending creativity, the show earned widespread critical acclaim, including over 20 Emmy nominations.
In an interview with ScreenRant’s Grant Hermanns, actor Kayvan Novak reflects on Nandor’s life without Guillermo, offering an amusing perspective on where the character could go next. After the film crew following the vampire household around for the past six seasons decides they've had enough footage, the long-running dynamic between Nandor (Novak) and his human familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) reaches...

The What We Do in the Shadows franchise has been so durable that a fan might be forgiven for thinking its shows may be just as immortal as its characters. From the mockumentary feature film to its first spin-off, Wellington Paranormal, to the FX series that also uses the movie’s title, we’ve enjoyed dozens of hours’ worth of comedy in this world. Given the facts of undead life for its mostly vampire cast, less discerning creators could have potentially kept it in (bat) flight for dozens more. But said creators are discerning, and whether we’re ready or not, the sixth season will be the last. The silver (bullet) lining: What We Do in the Shadows is going out at the peak of its vampiric powers.
Previous seasons have ended on a cliffhanger, most memorably the Season Four reveal that human familiar Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) had finally run...

When Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement team up, good things tend to happen. From “Flight of the Conchords” to “Wellington Paranormal,” and “What We Do in the Shadows” (the movie) to “What We Do in the Shadows” (the series), the two on- and off-camera talents have shown a knack for elevating mundane situations through fantastic creativity. “Conchords” heightens its band members’ everyday struggles for renown and romance with hysterical musical interludes. “Wellington” disrupts the humdrum duties of New Zealand cops by serving up cases with a supernatural twist. Stories in “Shadows” emerge from the perpetual boredom of vampire roommates who’ve grown tired of immortality’s tedium.

In 1981, as the Monty Python sketch comedy troupe approached the end of its most fertile period, Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin co-wrote the feature film Time Bandits, which Gilliam also directed. Though Monty Python’s Flying Circus and some segments of their various movies would be entertaining to kids and adults alike, Time Bandits was pitched at a younger audience and, according to an essay by Bruce Eder at Criterion.com, became “the most critically well-received children’s film in nearly two decades.”
For some Gen Xers who saw it as children, Time Bandits was a formative event: a fantasy story that didn’t hold back on physical or emotional violence, and (spoilers ahead for a 40+-year-old movie) had no compunction about giving the young protagonist’s terrible parents an unambiguously punitive ending.
Now Time Bandits is getting a revival in streaming TV series form. I can’t speak to how 2024 kids will receive it,...

What We Do In The Shadows will end with its upcoming season 6, it’s been announced: more on the news here.
What We Do In The Shadows began life as a feature film in 2014, written and directed by Flight Of The Concords star Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. The latter of those two has gone on to direct Jojo Rabbit and has become a creative force in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directing Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder, infusing the franchise with his signature humorous approach (even if he took the job to keep food on the table.)
What We Do In The Shadows inspired two television series. The first was Wellington Paranormal, which began in 2016 and followed police officers Minogue and O’Leary, played by Mike Minogue and Karen O’Leary respectively, who were minor characters in the film. What We Do in the Shadows has bested the challenges of transitioning from film to TV, becoming a successful and hilarious show that maintains the heart and soul of the original movie. The series took a unique approach by not simply copying the movie but carving out its own path. By creating its own lore and expanding the world of the franchise, What We Do in the Shadows has set the bar for adaptations, showing the importance of thinking outside the box.

The best parody movies take the most outrageous aspects of movie genres and make them even more ridiculous, without mocking the genre itself. Great parody movies have a clever sense of humor and intelligent jokes that appeal to people's love for the genre they're spoofing. Some of the best parody movies, like Airplane! and Shaun of the Dead, have become iconic and have even received critical acclaim and awards recognition.

Police procedurals are one of television’s more tried and true genres, and cop-based content has been a part of the medium since its start. Television shows that focus on cops have evolved in tremendous ways, and it’s become a genre that can be full of innovation and subversions rather than formulaic stories.

There’s a growing demand for serialized cop shows that chart a single crime over the course of an entire season. However, this doesn’t mean that more traditional episodic series have disappeared. Everybody knows about Law & Order, CSI, and Criminal Minds, but there are more obscure police procedurals that are worth putting under the magnifying glass.

Taika Waititi’s genre-bending What We Do in the Shadows became such a successful mockumentary experiment that it’s spun off into one of the silliest comedies of the decade.

“Bad Behaviour” is a family affair in more ways than one. It centers on mother Lucy and daughter Dylan, both of whom work in the entertainment industry. Alice Englert (“Ginger & Rosa”), who wrote, directed, and stars as Dylan, would know a little something about that — she’s Jane Campion’s daughter. The “Power of the Dog” auteur even makes a cameo in the film.
Though “Bad Behaviour” is playfully meta, it’s not needlessly self-referential. Englert separates herself as a filmmaker with this screwy tale of modern narcissism (although she and her mother do both have a thing for guru characters). “Bad Behaviour” is bright and lively (not Campion’s wheelhouse) but, like its characters, it’s also aimless.
Englert clearly wants to say something meaningful about mothers, daughters, acting, female celebrity, social-media culture, spirituality, and mental health, but she’s not yet deft enough to tackle all of these things at once.

CBS’ “Big Brother” scored a whopping 0.81 rating in the advertiser-coveted audience demographic Wednesday night, leading all of primetime. Though the episode didn’t post the biggest overall audience of the night, it was still far and away the highest-rated.
Still, in raw viewership, it was no match for NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” which attracted 5.4 million total viewers to become Wednesday night’s most-watched program. Unsurprisingly, NBC was the most-watched overall network on the night.

CBS' all-reality Wednesday got underway in winning fashion.
Big Brother Season 24 got underway with 3.7 million total viewers and a 0.8 rating in the demo, easily winning the night for CBS.
Granted, the series was down a little vs. last summer, but it remains one of the network's strongest performers.
If the show can hold at these levels, it will remain a strong option for CBS.
Meanwhile, the series debut of The Challenge USA came in at 2.2 million viewers and a 0.4 rating in the demo.
That's a solid number for the summer, and if it can hold at these levels, it should be back on the schedule next summer.
The spinoff of the MTV counterpart also improved upon Love Island's last summer bow.
Both shows powered CBS to a night on par with Wednesdays in-season.
Over on The CW, Mysteries Decoded opened its new season with 550,000 viewers and a 0.0 rating in the demo.

With its list of new releases for July 2022, HBO Max is stepping up its TV game. Not that any entity associated with “It’s Not TV, It’s HBO” would ever not bring the televised goods, but the small screen is of particular consequence this month.
The middle of July is jam-packed with TV goodies like docuseries The Anarchists (July 10), rescued animated project Tuca & Bertie season 3 (July 11), and the latest Nathan Fielder creation The Rehearsal (July 15). The real heavy hitter arrives later on though. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin premieres on July 28 and will introduce the next generation of the Pll franchise. It doesn’t have a release date yet but July will also host season 3 of the delightful Harley Quinn at some point.
HBO Max’s movie offerings aren’t as deep this month. The Bob’s Burgers Movie (July 12) and We Met In Virtual Reality (July 27) are really the only originals of note.

Photo: ‘Wellington Paranormal’ Doubling Down and Finding Success As we have written about on this very site, there is an abundance of incredible comedic talent running rampant and controlling our cultural zeitgeist right now coming from New Zealand, and that is a very good thing. Lost in all of the talk about Taika Waititi’s incredibly meteoric rise to prominence as one of the most in-demand filmmakers in the game, is the work of him and his frequent collaborator, Jemaine Clement. Perhaps best known as one half of the comedic musical duo and show of the same name ‘Flight of the Conchords’, Clement has been behind some of the most impressive comedic work of the last two decades and his collaborations with Waititi have produced some of the best comedy on television today.
